I sincerely appreciate Gore's endorsement. It was simple and straight forward. It was logical and humane. Currently, top tier democratic candidates appear indecisive about gay rights. At best their answers assume a wink in the general direction of their gay and lesbian voter base. "Come on," their imagined wink says, "you know I would support you if I could." Well, no we don't. We are left guessing what your cryptic signals mean. Does your support of civil unions, but not marriage mean I should vote for you because at least you don't want to change the constitution? Would you vote for someone who advocates for separate and unequal rights? It leaves gays and lesbians in an awkward position in November. Either vote for the republican candidate whose stance is clearly against you, or vote for the democrat who is partly against you.
My advice to the candidates is simple. Stop dancing around the issue, and take Gore's lead. Heterosexual democrats will be impressed by your sincerity. They will vote for you even if you support gay marriage. Stop trying to win evangelical voters. Write them off. They only represent 30% of the voting base. Go after the more reasonable 70%. Stand up for us. Be a leader. Respect our humanity. We need you now more than ever.

Gore's Announcement....
-
Why does this have to come up for debate every election? I advocate full civil rights for everyone. But, in truth I'm tired of this issue and Roe Vs Wade coming up at every election. The Republicans don't mind saying they don't want gay rights, or abortions and the Democrats have to dance around the issue for fear of offending anyone. Couldn't this be debated another time?

Gay marriage does not come up every election. It only started coming up in 2004 on the presidential level. The conservatives use the issue to turn out evangelical voters, so the democrats might as well use it to turn out their base.
But beyond politics, it is a serious human rights issue... especially for those who are discriminated against. In the 60's did we ask Kennedy to stop talking about race relations because it was a hot button issue?
-
Well, we can hope that others will follow Gore's lead.
-
yet another reason why its depressing that Bush rigged the election and this amazing man never got to be president. I sometimes dream about what the world under gore would be... Polar bears smiling, gay couples finally getting happily married, people thinking. Remember when poeple used to think? I miss that.

I commend Al Gore for simply, clearly, and sincerely stating his support of gay rights/marriage.
I wish, that he had come out on this issue when he was running for the oval office.
The canidates for the 2008 elections should also be clear as to where they stand on this issue.
The canidates are giving too much credence, power, and leverage to the religious right.
What needs to happen is for the candiates to stand behind the constitution, bill of rights, and the basic rights guaranteed to everyone.
Why no candiate took offense to Huckabee stating that we need to change the constitution to make it conform to christian beliefs is appalling.
Unfortunately, in politics, at this stage of the election it's all about not offending anyone, getting as many votes as possible.,and appealing to the masses.

"What needs to happen is for the candidates to stand behind the constitution, bill of rights, and the basic rights guaranteed to everyone" Exactly right. That's what should be done every day. Not just at election time.

How about a Gore/Edwards ticket?

A Gore/Edwards ticket would be too wonderful to even hope for. We could then really believe in a mantra of "change"! The combined intelligence and moral leanings would be a god send and such a refreshing breath of fresh air. We would actually see our previous administration held accountable. Yep, too wonderful to even hope for. Yet, for some strange reason I still hope.

Me too. Imagine Ending the war/occupation of Iraq, a decent health care plan, human rights for everyone, the infrastructure repaired, fair trade laws that make sense for us, the rich paying their fair share of taxes, the oil companies reined in, no more nuclear, or coal fired power plants. environmental laws reinstated and enforced, construction of wind and solar power plants. requiring auto manufactures to build electric cars. And while we are dreaming we may as well build a coast to coast fast rail service with arteries to major cities. That's what we could have with Gore/Edwards.

I agree, we need forward thinkers. Leaders that will help build a better America, instead of tearing apart the constitution.
There is so much work to be done on so many levels. We need leaders that will start paving the way.

How did Al ever get into politics anyway?!!! He seems far too normal, open-minded, and interested in bringing people together to change the world. Too bad Dubya robbed him of his presidency.
