East Timor's President Jose Ramos-Horta is in a "serious but stable" condition after being shot by rebel soldiers at his home. The attack took place early in the morning leaving Mr Ramos-Horta with a gunshot wound to the stomach. He was flown to Darwin in Australia for treatment where he is said to be in a "serious but stable" condition.
His attacker was Alfredo Reinado, a renegade soldier who had threatened the government in the past, Reinado was killed by guards during the attack. The incident is being considered as an attempted coup and so Australia have vowed to send more peacekeepers to East Timor in response to the attack. The picture shows Jose Ramos-Horta on the left with his attacker Alfredo Reinado during a political discussion in 2002.
*Update*
Jose Ramos-Horta is now said to be in a critical condition.
