A hollow victory for the polar bear

After a three year battle the polar bear has won its place on the government's Endangered Species list. But it's a somewhat hollow victory.

Three non-profits, the Center for Biological Diversity, Greenpeace and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), first sued the Bush administration in 2005 to secure protection for the polar bear under the Endangered Species Act. After many hearings, and even more hold ups, the government was compelled by law to make a final decision by January 9, 2008. The government flouted this deadline however, and was subsequently forced to make a decision by May 15 after animal rights activists, again, took the matter to the court.

This delay allowed The Department of the Interior's Minerals Management Service (MMS) to complete the first Chukchi Sea oil lease sale since 1991. A press release posted on the MMS' own website boasted that the sale resulted in "667 bids on 488 blocks -- both record-setting numbers -- on the Outer Continental Shelf," with submitted bids "totaling almost $3.4 billion."

The Chuck Sea lies between Alaska and Siberea and is home to one fifth of the world's polar bear population. "Had the polar bear been listed prior to January 9 as the law required, that lease sale could not have moved forward without some substantial additional review of the impacts to polar bears," said Kassie Siegel, who serves as the climate program director at the Center for Biological Diversity.

"After years of delay, the Bush administration was forced to face the reality that global warming has endangered the polar bear and that the polar bear needs to be placed on the Endangered Species Act," said the Republican Chairman of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, Edward J. Markey in a statement to CNN. "But the administration has also simultaneously announced a rule aimed at allowing oil and gas drilling in the Arctic to continue unchecked even in the face of the polar bears' threatened extinction. Essentially, the administration is giving a gift to Big Oil, and short shrift to the polar bear."

It's estimated that there are between 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears in total on the planet, but the population is expected to decline to less than 10,000 over the next 50 years. Polar bears are only found in the wild in the Arctic. They spend much of the year on sea ice hunting for seals, which serve as their staple high fat diet. But global warming is taking its toll on the Arctic. The region is warming at a rate that is five times faster than that of the earth as a whole. In September 2007, the Arctic ice cap shrunk to a record low, with an additional 1 million square miles disappearing compared to previous years, meaning the polar bear lost an area of habitat equivalent in size to six times that of California.

Despite the fact that polar bears (and the planet) are on such thin ice, the government has its eye firmly on the gas pump, and is far more concerned about the interests of big business. While adding the majestic creatures to the endangered species list, the Secretary of the Interior, Dirk Kempthorne, cautioned that the Environmental Protection Act should not be "misused" to regulate global warming.

"Listing the polar bear as threatened can reduce avoidable losses of polar bears. But it should not open the door to use of the Endangered Species Act to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles, power plants, and other sources," said Kempthorne. "That would be a wholly inappropriate use of the ESA law. The ESA is not the right tool to set U.S. climate policy."

Fortunately for the polar bear, the Bush government will soon be extinct. With even John McCain making environmentally constructive comments in recent days, lets hope they can hold out for a wind of change.

  • I knew they would find a loophole somewhere.

  • And what do we ever do for endangered species?

Pretty much nothing. Make it illegal to hunt them, if anything.

    Just wondering,
How many people hunt Polar Bears?

  • Leave the oil in the ground. It serves a purpose. Go to natural sources of power.......air,wind,sun,waves,etc. Whores only survive when they have John's. The American people are the John's to the oil prostitutes. If there is any individual out there that thinks that man is in some way superior to any animal on this Planet, especially one as grand as a Polar Bear, please contact me. I am trying to separate the wheat from the chaff. The idiots from the Kind Loving intelligent people at Current.......people have hunted Polar Bears from helicopters for years. The Bears travel in a basic straight line and they set up camp and wait. Great off-white hunters......I saw a twelve foot tall Polar Bear in a guy's house one time and he said it tried to bite down on his leg right before it died. He said "do you want to see the scare". I said I wish I could not see any thing of you. I wish the Bear would have eaten you and then scattered you as excrement across the ice. He took it the wrong way and we were not friends after that...........Johnnie Hargrave.......Golden Ruler...

  • Well said. Weird thing is Canada still hunts and sells products made from polar bears. You'd have thought the Canadians would be a bit cooler than that.

  • Yeah Kid, Bush should be ashamed of himself. But we all know what is more important to him. OIL.Its just freakin sad to know that one day the only way my grand children will know about polar bears will come from a book..

  • or the zoo. maybe they will be able to make a comeback now.

The Eagle is doing better with the same type assistance, however the Eagle doesn't need the same ICE and Temp.

We shall see. Hopefully it will get better. The part about old energy leases is simply what happens when you have the fox guarding the hen house. 62 million Americans bought this bill of goods in 2004. Our only hope is the YOUNG and MINORITIES come out in full force this time. IF THEY DO, Maybe we can put an end this GIANT SACK OF LIES. You can bet they will start hammering Obama now.

  • Nature always finds a way. From what I have heard, Grizzleys bears are moving farther north due to warming. They are starting to mate with polar bears and producing a hybrid called a " Grolar bear". I am not kidding. Check out National Geographic. It would be sad to lose the polar bear but our world is acting to slow to save it.

  • yes cosmo i am more then will to do all the above . I'm old school cosmo so It would not bother me one bit But your right it would take all the people to stop this and there are lots that will do nothing

  • your very welcome cosmo..

  • A recent study predicted that the Arctic ice caps could be entirely gone in the summer months in as little as 34 years. At this point the species will need to adapt to their changing climate -- the poles witness the most rapid climactic changes on earth due to climate change.

    Great post.

  • Continue global warming, or the bears win!

  • If we really wanted to keep animals from being endangered, we could stop hunting them and let them out of zoos. That way their natural life cycle, which was around before zoos, could put their number back up and keep them happier!
Who doesn't love a nice big polar bear smile?
    earthhugger
  • clayjj, dear.
if we stopped keeping up zoos, as in, not let the animals out. but don't capture more or breed them in captivity. Then the natural cycle they had would be back to fine and dandy, but since humans have messed up their supply and demand, we also messed up their way of life.
Zoos allow people to see domesticated, unhealthy animals. Space shuttles allow people to see the beauty of space, but not every state has those. My point is, if someone really want to see a wild animal in it's full glory, then they should go see it where it's healthy and thriving.
