Howdy,
Release day is upon us once again, which means new features on Current.com. Here’s a breakdown of what’s new:
A new look for items
- You may have noticed that the “keep browsing” section has packed its bags and moved across the page to the left. We think this will help draw attention to other Current.com items worth checking out.
- We’ve moved the views and response counts up to make way for longer titles on your items.
- The launch of Current:News brought heaps of feedback about picked for TV items. We’ve added tabs at the top of picked for TV items, so switching between the item and it’s Current:News counterpart is easier than ever.
- Our send button has been re-incarnated as an email button, which in retrospect makes much more sense.
- Have thumbnail woes? If you’ve ever uploaded a video that resulted in a lackluster screenshot, this one is for you. Our uploader now lets you select and edit screenshots to your heart’s content.
Improved responses, now with threading!
- Item pages were getting some redesign love, so we decided to toss in some improvements to responses as well. Now when you include an image or video in your response it will display in-line, in all its glory. Try it out!
- But wait, there’s more! We know discussions on Current.com can get confusing, so we’ve added the ability to reply directly to another community member’s response. These create threaded discussions that can be expanded or collapsed. Go post a response to a response, it’s fun!
Tired of receiving share emails?
- Shares are a great way to, well, share with other members of the community. While these emails can be informative, too many shares can quickly become overwhelming. Our first step is to add the ability to customize share email preferences. You can choose to receive shares from anyone, just your connections, or no shares at all. In addition, when you receive a share email, you will now be able to prevent that individual from sharing with you in the future. We’ll be expanding this in our next release, so let us know what you think.
User generated content? No, user generated logo!
- A short while ago, a member of the Current.com community sent us some feedback regarding our header logo. Needless to say, the feedback was critical, but it was also spot on. Thankfully, he offered some helpful tips, and lo-and-behold, a much-improved version of our Current.com header logo was born. You can read his original post here, complete with screenshot comparisons: http://www.nivas.hr/blog/2008/05/12/optimize-your-logos.... Thanks, Daemon!
Our team has been working feverishly on these updates, and they’re eager to hear what you think of them. Suggestions? Feedback? Post a response below, or pour your thoughts into an email, fold it into a digital paper airplane, and send it flying in the direction of feedback@current.com.
Best,
Mario

And you even picked the perfect Item page to show off with ;) Hopefully the feedback on these changes is positive - I don't want to be replaced by that monkey!
-
Looove it.
Biased, obviously. But love it. -
It's great BUT I don't like how images or videos in the responses are now displayed in-line. I think it distracts the reader from the text - which is way more important than its visual attachments, in my opinion.
Apart from that I really enjoy all the new features! Great job! -
I am SO glad you guys took the optimization advice from Daemon, that sort of thing drives me crazy as well! The improved logo looks superb!
-
I don't like the inline images either... if you post a large image in response it just dominates the page...
for an extreme example, see this:
http://current.com/items/88813852_sudan_man_forced_to_m...
(don't know what i was doing on that page)
and maybe it's just what I was used to, but I liked the strategy of posting a response with a silly image that people could either ignore or thumbnail-click for a surprise. Having the image show up inline kind of ruins the subtlety of that.
Like the threaded comments, though! -
A special Thank You to current staffer Kelly from feedback for steering me to this thread.
One thing. Seems like YouTube is having problems lately. A lot of starting and stopping. It's annoying.
Much like some of my posts. -
Things are looking good around here. Nice job! I actually like the images in-line. Maybe there is a max-size you can limit them so they do not get out of control in size?
-
Great work, Mario and staff!
Current looks more and more professional every day.
I look forward to using the new features soon..and to control how many messages go out and come in.
Current is the future of media and I look forward to seeing how is going to evolve!-

The gray font color used in the body of your website is quite hard to read, because the contrast is so low. (I'm on a Macintosh using Firefox.) Please make it at least a darker shade of gray.

Really liking the changes. Love it.
A suggestion though, the giant footer in the home page could be put on the right hand side, which is blank just to make the site look more even cause you got this long body and then short tables on the right.-

Most of the changes are great, but the "response to a response" thing is kinda out of sync with what other sites are doing. The Gawker network sites allows you to indicate at the top of your public comments that they are directed to a certain person's comments. You make this indication by clicking "respond" on the target comment. It's a great way to keep threads straight. Now I have to write in permanent marker on my keyboard that the respond button does not work this way on Current.com. I've already accidentally emailed some guy a snarky comment that I actually hoped he'd never read (I just wanted to add it to the thread). So how about you let the community vote on this "feature". Its bad enough that I still can't remember all the vi commands, now I have to add Current's "response to a response" button to the list (what does that thing do again?).
Seriously, you made a "don't touch that button" button. Like the self-destruct on Voyager or Enterprise. Yeah, we'll end a bunch of episodes with a self-destruct count-down, but you still wonder why they added it to the ship..-

I like the new reply feature but I did notice that when someone replies to a comment, their user stats next to their picture don't show up on the reply. Not really a big deal but just thought I'd bring it to your attention (if you haven't already noticed).

The changes look great.
Thanks for all the good work the current.com team does to create a forum for alternative news that gives people from diverse communities the ability to get our issues and stories to the public that are censored by the mainstream corporate controlled media.
Democracy depends on the free flow of information and Current.com is crucial to ensure the complex story of the world is not told only by the corporate controlled media.
Thanks and Kudos for an outstanding website. -
This site has improved so much since it started almost three years ago. Current has come a long way and I hope to see it go even further. BTW, sometimes when I get a response to a comment the reply doesn't come down... the boxes keep flashing but the reply is not shown. But all in all, this is a great website and I enjoy contributing here very much.
