Questions about the attitude of Italians to their Roma minority were again being asked yesterday after photographs were published of sunbathers continuing as normal with a day at the beach despite the bodies of two Gypsy girls who had drowned being laid out on the sand nearby.
The incident took place outside Naples, where a Roma encampment was burned to the ground this year after its inhabitants had been evacuated for their own safety. Accounts given by Italian media varied, but according to the news agency Ansa, the victims - aged 14 and 16 - and two other young Gypsies had been begging from daytrippers on the beach at Torregaveta, west of Naples, on Saturday. Other reports indicated they were selling trinkets. The area is easily reached from the city by a railway line that ends near the shore.
At about 1pm, the four girls decided to go into the water even though none of them, it seems, knew how to swim. They soon got into difficulties because of strong currents in the area and were hit by an unusually big wave. Two of the girls were rescued by life-savers from a nearby private beach. But rescuers were unable to reach the two oldest until they were already dead. Their corpses were dragged ashore and laid out on the sand under beach towels.
"But the knot of curious onlookers that formed around the girls' bodies dissolved as [swiftly] as it had formed," the newspaper Corriere della Sera reported. "Few left the beach or abandoned their sunbathing. When the police from the mortuary arrived an hour later with coffins, the two girls were carried away on the shoulders [of the officers] between bathers stretched out in the sun." La Repubblica also expressed astonishment at the behaviour of those present. "While the lifeless bodies of the girls were still on the sand, there were those who carried on sunbathing or having lunch just a few metres away," it reported.
The civil liberties group EveryOne said it was unconvinced by reports of the incident at Torregaveta and asked whether there might be something more sinister behind it. A statement from the group said: "Two young Roma would never have left their scant merchandise for 'a refreshing dip' in the waves. Two Gypsy girls would never have gone bathing in full view of everyone because of the modesty that is one of their distinguishing characteristics."

a girls gotta tan.

I'd like to know what was going on in those people's minds when the officers passed by carrying the coffin.
They didn't even stand up as a sign of respect. No one bothered leaving their sunbeds.
I'm speechless. -
Yeah! show some respect! what is with those crazy sunbathers, man!? Outrageous!
-
Wow I can’t believe anyone could be so incredibly heartless.
-
What would you have them do? They were on holiday. It's a beach, someone drowned, not a totaly uncommon circumstance, unfortunately. To make it some kind of civil rights issue seems biased and silly.
-
Attitudes against the Roma gypsies in Italy are incredibly hotile but this is incredible.. it's almost as if the kids weren't seen as human..
horrible. -
WHAT?!! A civil rights issue? No ones saying form a line, draw up some signs and sing we shall overcome. A little compassion maybe? Animals have more heart than this. I understand your need to be the voice of reason on a site like this, but seriously dude. Perhaps you see nothing weird about someone eating a sandwich not too far from your spoiling corpse, but I would hope one would lose their appetite over my dead body.
-
Vanity has never been so blatantly photographed.
-
this would make more sense in a war zone!
-
What makes it worse is there seems to be a question as to why the girls why the in the water in the first place. Perhaps it wasn't by choice? I wonder if there will be a proper investigation into their deaths by the local authorities.

If it's anything like black serial killers in America...they won't care until one of the Roma kill an Italian or if it were an Italian that did the killing they won't care until they kill another Italian...that is if it were a 'murder.'
A black serial killer is not noticed until he kills someone white...because normally serial killers stick to their own race. -
I don't know about you but watching coffins being carried down the beach would make me want to use a tanning booth...
-
These sunbathers lack any sense of compassion. I bet they were even annoyed the caskets were blocking their sun.

All I'm saying is this article tries to make it sound like they did this because they hate Gypsies, when really they could just be assholes.
-
I remembe reading an article on Current a while ago that was about the Italian's hatred of gypsies. Now where was it. . .

This isn't it, but if this doesn't show the Italian's feelings I don't know what does. It is a sad situation indeed.

They, along with most of Europe consider Gypsies less than human. As I remember, it wasn't too many years ago being "Black" in America would have invoked much the same response under similar circumstances. "Civil" Rights (with emphasis on CIVIL) is where we started.
-
Same old story. People now are so non-sensitized by things, thanks to the stinking media that they don't know the difference between the fake world of television and real life. We have no nurtured a society of no compassion?
-
It seems as though Italians consider the Roma to be less than animals. I bet if someone's dog drowned, people would stop sunbathing as they carried the dog's body away.
-
if Italians consider this to be showing 'class' then count me out

Death is an inevitable part of life but jeez! Every human should be valued as equal and having worth not like this!
-
I don't get why people are surprised. This is Italy. These were gypsies. Italians couldn't give a shit about gypsies.
It may be horrifying and disgusting to most people with a heart here who actually care about the world, but its normal for them. And I guess that kinda sucks, but being an Italian and visiting there often, I see a lot of it and it's not surprising.
But neither is the indifference I see when I go into the tenderloin in SF, so...
oi! end rant. -
I'm sure people were oblivious/shocked or trying to make the best of a sunny day. It's easy to say what you would have done, but what really could you have done?
As a lifeguard for a long while I know how ridiculous beach goers are.-

Well I guess the sun is more important than morals..
-
Wow, anything for a tan............... even if they have hatred for gypsies, that's still gross to be around!
-
If only she would have stopped sunbathing they would still be alive today.
*cough*
morals have nothing to do with it if you can't do anything to help
Would you start crying if you saw a dead crackhead on the sidewalk while on vacation with your family?(or would you pretend he is sleeping and continue skipping along)
What if you saved for a year to get on this trip and it was only going to last another 5 hours?
people drown quiet often
most people dont care about strangers
If this surprised you, you may want to try and step outside your rainbow dream world. -
Although it does seem rather insensitive, how many of those sunbathers were actaully italians? Were they tourists on holiday? It was an unfortunate event, but what were they really expected to do? When someone gets into a car accident on your block do you stay inside and mourn a stranger all day?

Unbelievable!

Why would this surprise a jaded news audience? I’m still appalled & can’t believe that after the Indian Ocean xmass tsunami of 2004, when over 225,000 people were swept to their deaths, tourists were back lounging in their cushy lounge chairs on some of those very same beaches, like the Phuket, Thailand resorts for example, only a couple of hours after the monumental disaster struck.
When questioned, the tourists replied that they weren’t quite sure how they could help & had paid good money to holiday there & would continue to do so, even with rotting human carcasses all around them, including a shocked & mourning populace that had just lost everything-their families, homes, livelihoods & even villages-before an organized relief effort could be established with only barebones communications.
Seriously, at which point do you put down your pina colada & help out in a situation that could have very easily left you or your loved ones the victims and then overlooked like garbage because of who you are? This is just another sad example of compassionless people not caring for anyone outside of their own domain.-

RACISM = Ignorance and stupidity. Not all italians are racist towards the Roma...just like not all whites are racist toward blacks. Don't make general comments like that, you make yourself and your race, whatever you are, sound stupid. -
Had I been there I'd probably sit up (to see what the hell was going on) smoke a cigarette and lay down.
Not loading a coffin, Not worried if two dead bodies changed a massive body of water, and Me leaving isn't going to undo what happened.
Probably would have talked about it over lunch with people and mebbe even dinner depending on how much I saw.
I don't expect any of you to give a good goddamn when I die.
Spare me.
Spare me.
