Second rare white whale spotted in Australia

A white humpback whale has been spotted off the east coast of Australia: The whale was filmed by a TV news helicopter.

It is thought to be the offspring of 'Migaloo' ('White fellow' to the Aboriginies), another white whale which was sighted in the area two years ago: The two sightings off Byron Bay are thought to be the only two examples in the world.

  • i wonder what disadvantages this humpback whale faces for being white...

  • I reckon very few: they certainly don't have many predators, and the krill probably don't have good enogh eyesight to tell the difference!

  • Wow. What a sight that would have been.

  • It's hard to remain optimistic when such atrocities (global warming) occur. I hope this article instills hope in the masses, for there is still a change to undo what we did, so that we can appreciate mother nature.

  • Whales are truly amazing creatures: you usually only see them from above, but try watching some of 'the blue planet', or other bbc documentaries. I don't appreciate sometimes that they are mammals, perfectly adapted for a life at sea (it's a funny 'mistake' of evolution that they still have a completely defunct pelvis from the time when their ancestors had legs!).

When they go in for a mouthful of shrimp, the size of their mouth cavity and the speed that they move is truly terrifying, but spectacular.

  • Very cool! I hope when it goes to Antarctica this winter it stays away from the Japanese whaling fleet. Although they have been gracious enough to say they will wait one more season before they start hunting Humpbacks again.

  • Albino whale!?

  • it looks so otherworldly. it makes me imagine some other animals all white, picture a massive albino elephant. that would be a sight, too.

  • "At length the breathless hunter came so nigh his seemingly unsuspecting prey, that his entire dazzling hump was distinctly visible, sliding along the sea as if an isolated thing, and continually set in a revolving ring of finest, fleecy, greenish foam. He saw the vast, involved wrinkles of the slightly projecting head beyond. Before it, far out on the soft Turkish-rugged waters, went the glistening white shadow from his broad, milky forehead, a musical rippling playfully accompanying the shade; and behind, the blue waters interchangeably flowed over into the moving valley of his steady wake; and on either hand bright bubbles arose and danced by his side... Yet calm, enticing calm, oh, whale! thou glidest on, to all who for the first time eye thee..." Melville, Moby Dick

  • What a beutiful whale Migaloo is! I thought these guys were about to be COMPLETELY extinct for sure!

But it's still close really is'nt it? I want prize hunters/certain scientists to keep away from it, also WE need to protect them from that and global warming NOW, please invest in solar power for your home at LEAST. It'll only cost you £20, 000 at the START, THEN you will be blessed, ltterally paying aroung £5 a mounth like one lady had done. AND she sold her SPARE electricity off of the solar and the warm climate back to the companies who collect it, so you recieve well over £5 back! I'll try to find my link, it was a Panorama story.

Bt this has really made my day, I want him to get protected in proteced wild seas at least until they breed up more common again ater so many ife times.

  • Moby Dick was a sperm whale fantasy; this is a humpback reality. I'd love to see it; I wonder if it will survive the biggest threat: global warming effects.
