Residents of the Aegean island of Lesbos have submitted a request to the Greek court to ban the use of the word "lesbian" to describe gay women. The court dismissed the request...
Three residents of Lesbos, the birthplace of the ancient Greek poetess Sappho whose love poems inspired the term lesbian, brought a case last month arguing the use of the term in reference to gay women insulted their identity.
In a July 18 decision, the Athens court said the word did not define the identity of the residents of the island, and so it could be validly used by gay groups in Greece and abroad.
Several residents testified during the trial that the use of the word lesbian had brought recognition to the island and boosted its tourist trade.

I think it was a bit of a big request really, I know it's their heritage, but actually putting it into practice would've been a nightmare.

Here is a related story from earlier this month. -
Hmmm... so having a name for their nationality is worth fighting for, huh? And they do not want it's association with our common notion of lesbian. If having a name is so important and they don't want the association, why don't they just declare themselves as... lesbonians? It's just a name and almost all words have multiple meanings, but anyway, 'lesbonian' sounds pretty straight forward to me.

From now on, when someone tells me they're a lesbian I'll respond with, "I didn't know you were from Lesbos."

How Greek! Extremely quick to point out the widespread permeation of the Greek language across the globe in all respects the average Greek is, but as soon as it's possibly used in a way unintended -- then it's all OMG!! Lesbians can't be that, they have to be what I say!!
Greek is a beautiful language. Sometimes, it's hard to realize how many English words are rooted in Greek. -
Sapphonians sounds much more lyrical. Poet Sappho would approve.
