Chairman Mao once derided golf as decadent and elitist is now emerging as one of China's tourist attractions designed to appeal to North American visitors. Currently there are 16 golf courses on Hainan Island, and an additional 30 more are planned for the next 20 years. Hainan Island's emergent transformation as a tourist destination for golf and leisure had been spurred as a Special Economic Zone in 1988 encouraging business investment and development. In Brian Kendall's report for The Globe and Mail (6 August 2008), he writes that China is looking to package Hainan Island as a premier tourist destination for North American travelers. Sanya, the island's port city, already has beachfront-lined luxury hotels that have displaced fishermen's homes only a few years ago. And with the construction and planning of 30 more golf courses, additional luxury resorts and hotels are also in development.
