John Pilger's 2007 documentary explores the historic and current relationship of Washington with countries such as Venezuela, Bolivia and Chile. Pilger claims that the film "...tells a universal story... analyzing and revealing, through vivid testimony, the story of great power behind its venerable myths. It allows us to understand the true nature of the so-called "war on terror". According to Pilger, the film’s message is that the greed and power of empire is not invincible and that people power is always the "seed beneath the snow".

Pilger interviews several ex-CIA agents who purportedly took part in secret campaigns against democratic countries and who he claims are profiting from the war in Iraq. He investigates the School of the Americas in the U.S. state of Georgia, where General Pinochet’s torture squads were reportedly trained along with tyrants and death-squad leaders in Haiti, El Salvador, Brazil and Argentina.

******************************************
This is a film that should be shown in History classrooms throughout the states and the world. Pilger aptly displays the American government’s involvement in manipulating Latin America’s leadership over the past 60 years or so.

The focus on Venezuela for the first 40 minutes of the film is an interesting change from what we see in mainstream media. An unabashed socialist, Chavez has thrown out American control in Venezuela, and has gone a long way in convincing his neighbors to do the same. However, the beauty of this film is much more than its discussion of Venezuela. Pilger goes through the history of several countries other Latin American countries weaving them into the bigger picture, thoroughly explaining many of the important details. Its rare to find such a comprehensive history of US involvement in Latin America. Pilger tries establish how the system has evolved from physical control to financial control in today's era. Pilger has mastered obtaining great interviews. For example, in this film he the interviews the head former head of CIA involvement in Latin America as well as interviews an American nun who was tortured in Guatemala in 1989.

Add to the list Georgia and Ukraine. When will "we the people" wake up?

Finally a movie that shows this country's despicable arrogance at trying to "promote freedom and democracy" while we pass laws spying on our own citizens here domestically.

Not many people know about the CIA-trained death squads that screwed over Latin America since the 1950s and installed authoritarian military regimes even when leaders who were democratically elected didnt obey the US. Such as Arbenz in Guatemala.

And Pinochet in Chile. Then there's the Shah in Iran installed by the CIA after orchestrating a coup to oust the popular and democratically elected Mossadegh who committed the terrible crime of nationalizing Iran's oil for the benefit of the Iranian people.

It's not by Pilger, it is by Kim Bartley and Donnacha O'Briain.

Bush and Co. have made a mockery of Democracy, is it a wonder the United States Of America has lost all respect worldwide. I hope Obama can keep some of his promises and change the way our government and corporations do business in America and the world. Something has to be done we are at a turning point, and I hope the next turn is up and not down because America can't really go much farther down. Bush and Co. have dragged this country to unimaginable depths with his war on democracy.

Yeah, i was taught we royally scewed several latin american countries, but not recently...
You never know what to believe, you wanna be patriotic, and politicians say all the right things, but then you go on current and find all kinds of conspiracy theories. It's not that people are close minded, they just find it hard to go against what they've always been taught. Hard to go against the deeply rooted patriotism that has been instilled upon them throughout their lives.

Patriotism and Nationalism are the tools they use to enslave your imagination and your freedom of thought. We are human beings first and citizens of a particular country second. Let us never forget our common humanity.

Patriotism and Nationalism are excuses to commit atrocities and a license to remove your conscience.

Out of all the wars we had the only country we really helped was the ones in Europe. All the Mid East war we are still fighting. WHY? GREED!!

We want to take it over and they are not have it.

These people don't want to be like us,they are who they are. They live the way they live. Fighting injustice in one thing, taking over is an injustice too.

I want to thank you all for posting these documentaries. I've watched them many times. They offer the true view of what is going on in my country. I can corroborate this because I lived it, and my family is still there.

I hope more and more americans will take their blindfold off and see that they cannot blindly trust their government, and that the US needs a revolution also.

It's also important to realize that us Latin Americans don't hate all gringos. Just the chauvinist ones. ;) There are plenty and plenty of americans I have respect for. Hell, my stepfather is a gringo!

the "history" taught in most of america is so inaccurate or purposefully mis-informational that its no surprise things like this continue to occur with little or no public resistance.
the u.s. government does not represent the values of the civilians it works for...hardcore conservatives or revolutionaries.
