In the capital, foreign dignitaries have admired millions of flowers in bloom and lush, well-watered greens around its famous sights. But just 90 minutes south by train, peasants are hacking at the dry earth as their crops wilt, their money runs out and the work of generations gives way to despair, debt and, in a few cases, suicide.
Accounts differ of what happened next. Some farmers say the price of water was raised by 300% to put it beyond their reach. Others simply say that their irrigation channels ran dry. As subterranean water levels fell, their wells collapsed, fields were abandoned, mud-brick farm houses stood empty.
About 31,000 people around Baoding are said to have lost their homes or land.

they never cease to amaze me. we didnt hear much about tibet in press coverage so their campaign to silence that atrocity has worked also. now they are buying up US property with trillions we ourselves gave them for toys with lead.
why did they even think they could hold an Olympics

Am I to understand that the Chinese government, in anticipation of a larger tourist turnout, re-routed water supplies from the farming communities of Baoding and beyond yet, even when not really needed, the water wasn't, or couldn't be, routed back?
If so, that is one very cold-blooded act by a government determined to put it's best facade forward while tormenting it's own people into starvation and death. -

wow this is once again crazy news that you can barely even believe and you can only really find being talked about on current. because of the man made drought so many lives are going to be made worse, it seems in many cases for these games China has tried to act like a great country and kicks its own people's balls in a back room to do it. all the people who got messed over by these games should form a group lead by the little ugly anthem singer.

Remind me again why Beijing was chosen?

It is pity that the Western Media takes all opportunity to defame China & its people under any pretext. China might have arranged things as per their priorities to welcome the 'huge' guests in the Olympics. And they have shown the world ( includes the West) that they are none less to make the event a massive success .. !! The world have something to lern from them.

Seems China has been shady from the word go.
Truely tragic.

If you want this kind of suppression in the U.S. don't vote. Just leave everything to the politicians and bureaucrats. Water, energy, food, security, no problem.

Anyone that understands that America is not run by democratic or even republic principles should understand that we are in fact totally run by CAPITALIST principles. The very dark sides of the great capitalism experiment that we have been conducting over the last 200 years are finally coming to light. The credit/housing crunches, foreign investors, big business scamming the american people, illegal immigration employment, lobbyist and government pork, etc...
This, NBC, selling their soul in order to make big bucks is not a surprise, and neither is it a surprise that China would do such things. NBC and China are hand in hand in the Olympics as NBC paid more for the rights to the Olympics, than the rest of the world combined, so there is no way they would jeopardize that investment. Especially since that "investment" is an investment in NBC's future in China which is BIG money.
Greed is the only sin that still exist. It swallowed the other six.

If this aired on the Olympic channels, China would've been humiliated to the world, and athletes would've felt guilty when they flushed the toilets.

Something is fundamentally wrong with our relation to TV.

The news personnel are busy watching the athletes, and the athletes are busy having sex and visiting the Great Wall. Hmm. Sounds like we, as a people, need to take over the news a bit.

China wanted to put on the best show in the world, and it did. The government was willing to accept the cost and pass it on to its citizens. Now only time will tell if the benefits of hosting the event will rain down to the citizens to pay them back for their investment.

All China cared about it how world would see them on the TV during games, as long as China looks good for the TV, so the world can see, but whats really happening behind the camra is a nightmare, and they are trying really hard to keep it just like that, behind the camera.

I do believe, if I'm not mistaken, that there are many news channels. Why should NBC be the only station responsible for not airing this news? Other countries, besides the U.S. should also be showing this problem.

Lots of games seem to have been played by the Chinese, but not all were medal worthy.

@ outtheinside
First off no one is saying that the rest of media is not without fault. All the other media outlets, at least most of the big ones are also very interested in getting their paws in the China gravy train that is expected in the near future. NBC is just the most prominent as they were the ones covering the event 18 hours a day.
I believe they just said that China spent an estimated $40 billion on these Olympic games. 40 billion dollars. For a country that has a major poverty problem with 80% of it's people, extreme health and environmental concerns, etc... how can this be justified? Well it can be, but that is whole other discussion.
One other point, specifically at you "outtheinside" please don't be one of those people. You're tag says "I'm here to collaborate ideas. Let's play tag and educate each other." So in the vein of that ideal, it is best to not enter discussions with your first response being "you're a moron". Tends to make people see you as less than authentic.

And the idealist lefties just keep trying to push us closer and closer to this kind of political system. The all powerful, all involved, all giving, all collecting government that is responsible for the production and distribution of all products, capital, profits and resources from water to healthcare.
What evidence do you blundering socialists have that the US government would not do the exact same thing. This is what happens when people are forced to or choose to rely on the government. The value a voter is extinguished the moment their vote is cast. People who seek the power and influence of elected office are not defined by their compassion, but by their ambition. Ambitious people will crush thousands of lives to keep the power and fame they cherish.
“So we starve a few farmers, at least we look good on TV. This is the result of greed, ambition and power.

Please don't tell me that the Chinese nat'l anthem, "March Of The Volunteers" is just more of their propaganda bullshit they feed everyone.
