"In a letter dated August 7, Benedict said the sculpture 'has injured the religious feeling of many people who see in the cross the symbol of the love of God and of our salvation which deserves recognition and religious devotion.'
The amphibian, which according to the museum curators represents a self-portrait of the artist 'in a state of profound crisis,' is said to have shocked many visitors.
Does it offend you?

Silly old guy.
Why hasn't he said anything about "Rock me sexy Jesus" Hamlet 2?
-
It must be true that nothing is sacred anymore. This isn't art, it's blasphemy. Maybe sacreligious is a better word. hmmmm. have to check on that. All in all, I hope the artist likes extreme tropical climates!

well offending someone isnt illegal....so w.e you expressed your opinion... i have a choice to ignore or respect it.. or even crush it..
-
The only thing that offends me is that this is in a museum somewhere while I work my ass off to promote my art *sigh*...
seriously though folks, art is and can be anything, get over yourselves already. Why the hell would you be offended by a fucking frog? Isn't your "faith" strong enough to prevent "injury" by such a ridiculous piece of art?Anyone want to start a frog based religion? We could have slogans like "I TOADally believe" and other amphibian related catch phrases.
-
Oh! the ex-nazi youth was offended.....
Tough shit pope!
I'm sure the sheeple he shepherds will be upset too..
I'm sure buddy jesus will give the thumbs up...
Look he did!
Ride on!

it's amazing to me that liberals are so open mided till it comes to religion.
-
well crucifixion was a form of execution during Roman times, and since the frog doesn't look like Jesus then I don't think it's offensive. Something that would be offensive would be Piss Christ which was a cross with jesus on it in a container of urine....that would be more offensive than this frog with a coffee cup and egg in his hand

*sings*
"Always look on the bright side of life."
*whistles* -
well, amphibians are fucked, and are basically being extinguished by man, so no, I am not offended. The Pope is a chump.
-
The pope is upset? Really? The pope is upset by a little frog on a stick? Aren't there *slightly* more important things he could be complaining about?

was the pope a nazi?
Just me two cents.
Plus I like that piece, mainly because religion is a load of horse shite.

This reminds me of what Bill Hicks said about people wearing the cross. It's about 2 minutes 50 secs in. Heads up - there's some NSFW language.
-
Instead of slammin something so trivial as a frog on a cross he shud be slamming the so called priests that pray an sexually molest young boys that were and are put into the Churches care...i think the catholic religion is just one big scam... i actually find the Frog on the cross pretty amusing...

Deliah,
I guess you don't believe in the golden rule..
How would you like it if I started slamming YOUR ART?
You probably wouldn't like it very much.
So, why not show some respect here and don't slam my religion and I will not slam yours, whatever it is or your art.

Thats what he should do on his day off. Which should be sunday, shouldnt it?
-
I love it! Frogs are awesome and I would have to give this piece of art a thumbs up!
Great piece.

If everything that offends people is removed, the concept of free speech is redundant and pointless. The Pope has no right to request for it to be removed, it doesn't necessarily have to be assosiated with Christianity.

The cross as a symbol of love? And there was me thinking it was a symbol of death. However, Christ mounted on a rolling stone would not have quite the same effect would it(?) Tough love indeed!

The pope is entitled to his opinion, as is everybody. If this sculpture is creating conversation, then i would have to say the artist was successful. If every artist considered who would or would not be offended before they produced their work, this world would be a very bland place. For christ's sake... the beatles were considered offensive!

I find it sad and quite humorous that someone would make such a big deal about someone else's personal expression. That smacks of fascism to me, and coming from the Pope, well, I'm not horribly surprised. Besides, art has challenged the views of self-oppressed moral slaves since it was expressed ten of thousands of years ago. No sign of stopping now, just because a few contend that it's blasphemous...

What de heck?!

A self portrait of the artist in a profound state of crisis----
Reminds me of my favorite poet Robert Creeley. He has this hilarious poem it says something like,
"It hurts to live like this... meat sliced walking".
I get it now.
Still, kind of not a good idea putting it on display for all Christians to critique. Not a good idea. I can understand his feeling when he created this I think- but I can understand too, that it could be easily misinterpreted as an "artists" twisted vision on Jesus and that's not good.
