Since the start of the DNC, I've been watching the use of social media tools such as Twitter very closely while pondering the impact these new forms of communication actually have on politics, government, news, and most importantly television.

Are you using Twitter? We're interested in trying out a little social media experiment/discussion, and would love to invite you to join in. If you are a Twitter user, please respond below letting me know that you're interested, and make sure to tell me the best way to contact you.

You can send me a message on Current.com, reply @current on Twitter, or follow us at: http://twitter.com/current.

Also, if you know anyone else that might be interested in this, please send them the link to this post. The more the merrier!

    I don't use Twitter.
Will something best left unspoken happen as a result?
How can I correct this, should correcting be needed?

Ya what makes Twitter unique and worth the time? And why has current decided to support this particular site which as far as I can tell is in competition with? Are current and twitter agreeing to try and increase both sites user base or what?

I'm suprised to see Current's "tech savvy" audience doesn't know much about Twitter (the world's simplest site ;)

lol I was starting to think that Twitter was a computer staple like my web browser and word processor. I love twitter and I'm amazed at the many different ways people have chosen to use it. I like it simply because it's my own little webio where I can catch what's new and exciting around the web from a variety of different sources at once.

I'm not American, but if I was it would certainly be interesting! I simply don't follow it closely enough to be a good candidate. My money's on Obama with my fingers crossed that it doesn't bite us in the butt if that helps.

    Good luck!

    @huntre and @ivxx,

Until we are actually ready to give you guys the full scoop about our plan, take some time to play around with Twitter and get acquainted.

Twitter is a microblogging service, but that basically means it's a communications tool. You post short sentences called tweets, answering the question, "What are you doing?"

Tweets are tiny messages consisting of 140 characters or less, and the people who choose to follow you will get your tweets. The functionality is simple, really. You find other people to follow, and when you follow them their updates will appear in your stream. You can respond to their posts, they respond to yours, etc. If you want to message Current in a tweet, you simply direct that tweet to us by including @current in your tweet message. For example:

    http://twitter.com/current/statuses/901328343

There are a great many people using Twitter to post live updates from wherever they are. Political figures use it, for example Barack Obama tweets here: http://twitter.com/BarackObama

Sometimes people will choose to put identifiers in their tweets to let others know where they are at. For instance, everyone at the DNC is including #dnc08 in their tweets. This is called a hashtag, and by including it other people can follow the latest tweets coming from the DNC.

Here is a Twitter search for the #dnc08 hashtag:

    http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23dnc08

Any time a new tweet is posted, it will show up there.

Many sites, like CSPAN and perspctv are pulling tweets to see what people think about Obama, McCain, the elections, the policies, etc. Take a look at this article:

    http://current.com/items/89238765_

Because it is a form of instantaneous communication that can be done from a web browser or a mobile phone, we are interested in experimenting with it and using it in some of our own ways in the very near future. We've noticed a bunch of Current.com community members using Twitter, so we thought we'd open it up and invite everyone else to the party if they are interested.

More details to come, but let me know if you have questions in the meantime.

These grand social experiments, Twitter, Myspace, Facebook, Youtube, etc. Would be more interesting if they weren't owned by big media.

One more added thing I forgot to mention. Twitter can also be an excellent way to get your Current.com submissions shared with others on the Internet, and in turn this additional exposure could help increase the popularity of your submissions for things like Current:News or VC2 Leaderboard.

After you submit on Current.com, click the "Post" button at the top of the item page. This will open up a window of social networks to choose from, with Twitter as an option.

The default message is something like: "Check this out <link>" but you can edit this into something far more compelling if you want.

Try it out with your next submission, but it might be best to build out a following on Twitter first.

I have to do this because I'm dying to see how a 140 character limited post can be turned into something useful!

Maybe Current is planning to use Twitter to orchestrate various flash mobs at the RNC? Hmmm. That would be creative.

I'm dying of curiosity. How can something that is essentially a only a couple sentences long be utilized in a constructive way?

Please mario_a, I'm begging you! Give me a hint!
