Excerpts....

Pray for the construction of the $30 billion natural gas pipeline, Palin told them. Pray for the military men and women overseas, "that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending (U.S. soldiers) out on a task that is from God. That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for -- that there is a plan and it's God's plan."

Later, senior pastor Ed Kalnins -- with Palin standing at his side -- spoke about tapping into Alaska's natural resource wealth in order to fulfill the state's destiny of serving as a shelter for Christians at the end of the world.

"I believe that Alaska is one of the 'refuge states' -- come on you guys -- in the Last Days," Kalnins said, raising his arm to underscore his point. "And hundreds of thousands of people are going to come to this state to seek refuge. And the church has to be ready to minister to them."

Now that she's been selected as Republican presidential candidate John McCain's running mate, such comments raise questions: What are Sarah Palin's religious beliefs? What churches does she attend and who are her pastors? How have her beliefs played out in her public life in Alaska? What do they portend for a possible vice president?

....

CHURCH INFLUENCE

Palin reached into her own church when she filled the seat vacated last winter by Rep. Vic Kohring, R-Wasilla, who's now serving three and a half years in prison for bribery, conspiracy and attempted extortion as part of the federal crackdown on Alaska political corruption.

His replacement is Wes Keller, one of 10 elders in the Wasilla Bible Church and one of three candidates on a short list that was submitted to Palin by state Republicans. Another of the three finalists, Keller said, was also a member of the church.

Keller said he got to know Palin when she and her husband, Todd, joined the Wasilla Bible Church in 2002. He thinks his appointment to the House seat probably had more to do with his own community achievements than his membership in the church.

But his track record so far has pleased the religious right. In the recent legislative session, Keller sponsored a bill to make performing late-term "partial birth abortions" a felony. He also introduced legislation sought by the Alaska Family Council that requires all state-funded public libraries to install filters to protect kids from "inappropriate" material.

Eventually he hopes to see the state mandate that intelligent design be taught alongside evolution, Keller said Friday. He also favors providing public funds to parents seeking private education through some kind of voucher system.

.....

Since winning her race for governor in 2006, Palin has also attended a large Pentecostal church in Juneau -- the Juneau Christian Center. She's also worshiped at the Church on the Rock, a sprawling megachurch in Wasilla.

All four fellowships the family has attended appear to have one trait in common: They all insist on the inerrancy of the Bible. Their pastors preach that scripture is literally God's spoken word.

Launching into a discourse on the purpose of man earlier this year, Juneau Christian Center pastor Mike Rose touted the Genesis version of creation while dismissing Darwin's theory of evolution, which some Christian faiths are willing to accept.

This is what Palin brings to the Republican ticket. a sense that everything she and her party does is under the will of God. It is because we have such support by the Christian right, the the polls seem to have the Republicans inching it's way closer to Obama. Yet, the mass media seems to exploit it as if they are in support of this new found energy of the Republicans. I simply think with this sensationalism, it can do harm, when the mass media starts to bandwagon any party. On top of that, progressive moderators for MSNBC were criticized as being to liberal for the upcoming debates between Obama & McCain. So replace them with whom? It always seems that the networks always go further to the right and it never seems out of touch when they use the likes of those who support the right. I heard Tom Brokaw this morning talk about Obama as being necessary for him to continue the support for the war in Iraq in order to be accepted. I've never heard such rubbish in my life. The so called moderates aren't moderates, they're following the example of the continuing direction of the right and the old Bush policies. They are in a rut! When I see newsmen from the Washington Bureau hobnobbing and dancing with Carl Rove even if they may be Democrats, one has to believe it's nothing more than one big party, exclusive of the people. I think it was NBC who got rid of Phil Donohue when he started interviews, not to the liking of the Bush administration, although Donohue had the highest of ratings. ( The facts Donohue presented where so true and nothing is ever mentioned today about it! ) So in my mind, corporate TV and radio have always supported the mentality of the right wing, now that it has become a fixure of our predominantly imperialistic ways and accepted as good capitalistic policies by corporations.

This is what brings to mind why Palin is the perfect running mate for McCain. She has brought the religious right into the picture and gained the support of the likes of extremists like Lou Dobbs and at the same time give creedence to the reason to support big oil and gas. The pro-life people want her and that won't stop her from keeping people from having abortions even in the case of the health of the woman either from incest or rape. That's extremist!

There is also a story of a woman who lived in the same town as Palin that was fired from her job as city librarian in the town of Wasilla. She was fired from her job because she refused to get rid of books that Palin did not want in the library. Doesn't that sound familiar! As we go further to the right we have this censorship thing rear it's ugly head and further to the right we have Hitler and the book burnings. What do you think will happen to our libraries when she becomes Vice President? Do you think they will dismantle the diabolic police state structure that is in place? Censor America so no one has a say so in any matter? It's bad enough everyone is spied on, with the blessings of both parties!

She is a no-nonsense administrator as those in her hometown will profess! She is as dominant as a "barracuda" which people from her hometown know her as, and she will use her political power to exploit her powers to the fullest. She is known to have increased the taxes in her hometown of Wasila by 38%. She reduced property tax and increased sales taxes, even on food. The tax cut helped the corporate property owners. Does this sound like the candidate for the people or the corporations? She got to the top because she helped the wealthy and the powerful, but common folk of Alaska know better! All I have to say is, fine go ahead and support her if you want, but don't cry when we have four more years of what we had in the last 8 years!

    @rasting and gang...
i was just in an email storm with some friends of mine with similar concerns [from both sides of the political spectrum, by the way.]

at one point, i summed it up like this...

"If you think that either candidate for the presidency [or vice-presidency] could or will do anything to reduce or eliminate waste in government, go buy one of those bridges, too. [Brooklyn or Golden Gate]

You’re all actually talking as if either side, if elected, will make a difference. Where have you been for the past 30-40 years?

If it hasn’t happened yet, why do you think it will happen starting in January of ’09!?

stay tuned to these channels for the next four years and see if i'm anywhere near right [correct, that is...].

i'd LOVE to be wrong, but it doesn't happen all that often... :( and :) at the same time....

No, I'm not saying either side would make much of a difference especially without money and our economy in the bucket! But the disgusting politicians have given us little choice but to choose the lesser of the evils. I'd love to have some type of hybrid president with virtues of Nader and Paul, but there's nothing but a bunch of moneygrubbers out there and the Republicans are more unified. That gives me reason to support the corporate Democrats over the corporate Republicans! I see no end in sight and it would take forever to return to a democracy.

So Plusaf, we are no longer in a Democracy, we are in a Plutocracy. The wealthy rule and have considerable leverage over candidates and the masses mean nothing. The corporate media chatter means little and they have given the feeble and the weak minded fodder to feed on so they can continue this process.

There is a bright side however in Obama. As an individual, and not as a politician, he has a cleaner record and he has worked with the public to empower them. On top of that he was ridiculed by the Republicans. They just as well scoff at anybody who works to empower people as a community organizer! This does not mean that just because he is a Democrat he is corrupt, neither are a few of the Republicans who see the truth of the matter.

As far as Obama goes, he is following certain things that bother me, and that is the transfer of the continuing war, but only in Afghanistan. That to me is another dead end from my perspective. Also, ditto with McCain and his continuing wars in which he plans to follow through with the Bush doctrine and the continuation of the wars and bases throughout the middle east. This militarism and the continuation of imperialistic ways have got to stop! This alone will keep America in debt, and the money will continue to flow into the hands of the military industrial complex and keep America from any stability!

So if you think there will be bridges to build with our destroyed economy, think again. It may help to cut the miltary budget and bring our men and women home from war and try to act like a civilized nation!
