The Democratic presidential nominee slightly departed from his typical stump speech here to promote his economic plan and bash McCain for saying in March that he believed in less regulation on Wall Street.
The speech comes amid continued upheaval in world financial markets that has brought three of the five largest U.S. investment banks to their knees, and is requiring tens of billions of dollars in federal government bailouts.
"We are in the most serious financial crisis in generations. Yet Sen. McCain stood up yesterday and said that the fundamentals of the economy are strong," Obama told a crowd of 2,184 at the Colorado School of Mines. "A few hours later, his campaign sent him back out to clean up his remarks ... But we know that Senator McCain meant what he said the first time."
McCain, who appeared on MSNBC this morning, said his first priority is addressing the "alphabet soup of regulatory agencies," which he said were designed for the 1930s.
"Now we have an instantaneous financial system that's global in nature and it's not compartmentalized," he said. "Look at the Stock Exchange today as to what it was even 20 or 30 years ago. So you've got to fix that and also, very frankly, people were asleep at the switch."
Obama slammed McCain for being "fundamentally a deregulator," citing remarks McCain made in March that he believes in less regulation in the financial markets. He called McCain's decision to form a commission to study the economy "the oldest Washington stunt in the book."
"Here's the thing - this isn't 9/11," Obama told a boisterous standing crowd in a gymnasium. "We know how we got into this mess. What we need now is leadership that gets us out."
He got another ovation when he said he wouldn't allow lobbyists' interests to penetrate the White House.
"I am the only candidate who can say that Washington lobbyists do not fund my campaign, they will not run my White House, and they will not drown out the voices of the American people when I am President of the United States," he said. "That's how we're going to end the outrage of special interests tipping the scales."
Lakewood resident Penny Roach introduced Obama.
Roach was laid off from Merrill Lynch a few years ago, and struggles to pay medical bills even though she has skeletal health insurance.
She said Colorado needed to "turn blue" in November.
"Barack Obama is the only candidate ... who is a leader who isn't afraid to take on the special interests," she said.
Obama, who has spent the last day and a half in small Colorado towns, heads to Los Angeles tonight and Elko, Nev., tomorrow for another rally.
In addition to hitting his financial plan hard, he's peddled a message to Western voters emphasizing the need for clean energy, better paying jobs and tax cuts for the middle class.
Yesterday, he told a crowd in Grand Junction that Colorado and Gov. Bill Ritter understand clean energy and that if he wins in November, he'd invest $150 billion in 10 years to invest in renewable sources of energy and clean cars.
In Golden today, hundreds of overflow supporters who didn't get tickets into the event waved and screamed at the motorcade as it arrived a few minutes late to the engineering school.
Obama, who stayed at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Denver last night, stopped and waved at people lining the sidewalk on the corner of 15th and Welton Streets before heading to Jefferson County.

I guess that meeting with Bill Clinton really got Barack back on track. Let's stick to the issues. As Bill would say, "It's the economy stupid!"
I like the newfound enthusiasm. Obama looked like a man on fire... and we all could imagine what that would look like...

The response to the FAnnie/Freddie/ AIG mess has been very enlightening.
We saw Obama ranting about how this is the worst since the depression and how it will continue if McCAin is elected. Obamas remedy is to have more regulation, higher taxes and government control.
In contrast we saw McCain trying to calm the markets and saying we should revamp the regulations themselves to reflect the problem.
It is easy to see that only McCAin displayed any leadership. Obama actually made the matter worse by his hysterics.
In 2005 McCain sponsered legislation to address just the problem that cropped u with FAnnie and Freddie. In doing so he predicted what may happen without this legislation. The bill was defeated by Democrats, including Obama and Biden, and McCains prephecy came true. Now why did Obama vote against this legislation? It seems that he is second only to Chris Dodd in receiving dollars from Freddie/Fannie including PAC's associated with the two entities. Now THAT sounds like business as usual in D.C.
Like many things that pass Comrade Obamas lips (most of which come from a teleprompter- the man is being directed by someone) he is lying on this issue. Nothing new, he is a liberal.
On another note, now the taxpayers are on the hook for $4+ trillion from FAnnie/ Freddie and IAG bailout money. Couple that with Obamas sponserhip of the Global Poverty act promising .07% of gdp or something like $548 billion to the U.N., some $429 million for his citizen security force, free healthcare, college money aid and tax cuts for those who don't pay taxes and someone should ask where we are going to get themoney, especially since NONE of these things are permitted under the Constitution. The tax increase to finance this will destroy this country. This is irresponsible.
A vote for Obama is a vote for communism, big government and less individual freedom. -
Ok so now he's a Communist muslim??
-
no He is a candidate for president of the United States. he will say whatever the pollsters and his managers tell him to say and not more. If elected he will say whatever the lobbyists and his cabinet tells him to say and we hope not more. One thing that seperates the Republicans form the Democrats is that the Dems are better at making sure the mike is off and the press is silent.

The people who seem to be poo-pooing Obama's economic plan never comment on any of his specifics.
That's because they don't know any of the specifics because they never bothered to read his entire plan.
Rush limbaugh told them a year ago that Obama was evil and that was good enough for them.
Specifics? Details? Pshaw. They can't be bothered to go to his website, read his details and then discuss them point by point. Rush already gave them their marching orders so why waste time thinking for themselves.
Obama is a communist Muslim and nothing he or anyone else says will change their minds.
-
we already discussed what's wrong with the specifics of Obamas plan based on Obamas own words but no one seems to be able to refute it. That's because they don't understand The Fed, inflation and how it makes our economy worse.

(Click link to see Video, and fast forward a bit because the opening speaker really doesn't make it a quick introduction)
Here is Obama's speech in my town, Grand Junction Colorado. There were so many thousands packed there that the news crew couldnt even get close, and tickets sold out in less than an hour......because of that they just told people to go and get a spot where you could! i didnt mind watching it live from work, i thought it was cool they didn't want to bar anyone from seeing him.
I still see that the McCain campaign fails to say what their take is on global warming and the energy crisis like Obama does on every speech. Another reason why those assholes aren't gettin my vote!!!

Not only is mcSame going to continue with business as usual for the corporations and wealthy elite, but he IS using the confused, idiot technique that allowed American's to feel superior - and therefore incapable of passing judgment on the manipulative pile of sh#t.

Ok, let's cut through the nonsense. First of all, this ridiculousness about B.Ob being a communist needs to cease. This is not 50s. McCarthy was an ass, and fundamentally there is nothing wrong communism anyway. It has the same problem our capatalist economy does; corruption and greed of it's administrators. To harp on this only exposes the user's ignorance and devalues the overall opinion. So, please, stop.
Ok, now the economic plans. It is not incorrect to say that B.Ob plans to increase taxes. However, it is erroneous to claim his plan will increase taxes for all, because it doesn't. A key part of his plan entails increasing taxes for upper economic strata, those whose income is 200k or more, while simultaneously increasing tax cuts for lower and middle income Americans. McCain, on the other hand, plans to continue these tax cuts for the richest Americans, while providing some relief for low/middle income households. In a preliminary analysis by the Tax Policy center, B.Ob's ideas will increase revenue, while McCain's ideas will help in the short term, the eventual result would be an even greater deficit, although it does stipulate both are being very optimistic concerning generated tax revenue.
It is also interesting to point out that for all of the talk of fiscal responsibility Conservatives tout, the economy, especially those in the lower income strata have enjoyed brisker growth under a Democratic administration than a Republican one. Larry M. Bartels, a professor of political science at Princeton, in his book Unequal Democracy breaks down economic performance since the WWII era. The evidence, to say the least, is eye opening, especially when looking at how the lower income strata has faired in a conservative administration.
The bottom line is neither candidates platform is perfect. And, as in most politics, it may come down to choosing the lesser evil. However, a little research and fact checking shows who benefits respectively for each candidates plan. We need to look at the short and long term affects and make the most informed decision possible. If we continue to use hyperbole, fragments of information and outright lies to form the basis of our opinions, we are simply going to end up in the same straights we are in now.

I wish I could have been in Colorado to add my voice to the uprising against the ignorant McCain camp!

I can't believe anyone is arguing that Obama's economic plan is going to hurt our economy. Does anyone see what Bush's economic plan is doing?
McCain's economic plan is not only worse than Bush's. He intends on giving the oil companies a 4 billion dollar tax break. No tax break for renewable energy suppliers. Increased tax breaks for the wealthy. McCain has no plan to build upon jobs that have been lost. He wants to continue the trickle down economics. Give more money to the wealthy and let the free market (corporations) thrive and hope that they give the poor and middle class wages and benefits to reflect their profits.
That is not occurring people. So who in their right mind thinks that McCain's plan is anywhere near Obama's economic plan. The next president is going to have a difficult time just getting our economy on track.
McCain has not offered any new proposals from what Bush has stated.

There is a lot of finger pointing going on from both camps
as to where blame should be placed regarding the current financial meltdown?...A lot of hypocrisy in both camps yet you look at The Keating 5, S&l scandal, the past eight years of absolutely the "Worst leadership imaginable during which who was the so called "experienced GOP senior senator" during this tenure? ...John Mccain!
So a 5 % difference in his voting record from the past disastrous GOP policies is supposed to define his candidacy, his name the "Maverick?"Like I said get in line, there plenty of hypocrisy slop from both camps to eat- its just that the GOP slop is piled much higher to the sky!

Hey folks!! The American people had better wake up and smell the daisies ,as the old saying goes.Up until a few months ago we (the most of us) had never heard of Obama. Can you say the same of McCain? Regardless of what candidate you vote for, you need to vote for the right reason.Nothing i have heard on the news has been proven wrong about what has been said about Obama. It has been proven that he preferred muslim principles over American principles. What's it going to take to wake this nation up?

JohnA, its funny because there are millions of us who get what hes saying. Some people just don't want to get it.
