Are interracial relationships still taboo?

Sam Jackson is in a theatre near you in Lakeveiw Terrace and (spoiler alert!) he plays a cop who doesn’t like interracial relationships, and it makes you wonder if interracial relationship are still taboo. There have been plenty of films made about the subject, from Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner to Jungle Fever and Something Different, and they all have different takes that screen as hopeful and optimistic. But in reality, some Black people still have a problem with interracial dating. This could largely be regional: it’s common-place and casual to see interracial couples on the coast, but in the North and South, it can still provoke stares and snide comments. People also still believe that Black men choose White women as a sign of upward mobility. Sports figure are said to marry White women exclusively, but we can prove that isn’t true. Doesn’t matter. There is also some idea that Black men tend to date outside of their race more than any other. I don’t know that this has any truth to it at all, but Black men with White women tend to be more conspicuous and scrutinized differently than Black women with White men.

The biracial children that these couples often produce also have a hard way to go: they sometime struggle to find an identity in a country where so much is predicated by race. Having Sen. Barack Obama, a biracial man, run for president could change attitudes about it, but it may be too soon to know. What do you think?

I like this topic cuz it affects alot of ppl. I think that it is still somewhat of a taboo but it is getting better I also feel that it shouldn't matter whether a someone is black or white. I think that we could use a change in presidency but that doesn't necissarily mean that it will happen or that Obama is the right person.

What annoys me about black people dating out is the hypocrisy. Black men with white women under their arms looking at me like I'm crazy because, I a black woman, am under the arm of a non-black man.
In my family black women dating outside their ethnicity or race is damn near blasphemous for the men its no big deal.
I am fine with interracial relationships in the black community but certain people ruin the appeal of dating with no boundaries for many.

There are some interesting comments made at the bottom of the linked article. They range from acceptance, resentment, and outright racism.

This should already be a non-issue. It's 2008. We've got much more pressing issues than to worry about what color your neighbors wife/husband is.

I am sure it is still a problem for many people even though few would be willing to admit it. I wish people would just get over themselves sometimes ...

Not here. Id don't know about America.

But there are dicks everywhere, they don't reflect what is actually taboo or not.

Hmmm. While there are alot of generalizations made in this article, there are also a few valid points.

Why do black men date white women and vice versa? Because they want to. lol. Every person is different and some are just more comfortable then others with crossing racial lines for love and attraction.

"Black men with White women tend to be more conspicuous and scrutinized differently than Black women with White men" --- i call bs. I think that for starters this match-up just occurs less often than black men/white women relationships do. But mainly, it is difficult for anyone to date outside of their race within this country...And not necessarily because of cultural differences. 99% of the time interracial couples have these problems it is because of SOMEONE ELSES OPINIONS-- friends/family/strangers all make it harder for these couples.

As far as the difficulties of a multiracial child in America, I quite agree. However, the only way to transend these boundaries built on ignorance is to educate and inform those ignorant people and constantly push for change-- within your community, your family and your home.

This is one reason I like to live in Hawaii. Everybody marries everybody. It is just the norm in many respects.

While Oahu does have some racial problems, It sure seems that we have taken racial tolerance and acceptance to a higher level.

This kind of speculation makes me sick. People are going to date who they want. Sometimes out of curiosity or fascination, other times because of past experience. Either way, people get worried because they feel their population should thrive.

If you are someone who dates interracial, but still have a problem with someone in your own race dating interracial...shut the hell up and go get a life and a mate.

i cant believe this is still an issue for discussion
as a child of interracial marriage, i find it offensive that people still find it an actual issue

being interracial or even multiracial can be hard. my mother is black/white and my father is white/cherokee/black; people always try to make me prove my 'blackness', or they ask me something like "what race do you identify with the most?". i cannot stand ignorant people that want to make others feel inferior or second class because THEY feel threatened in some absurd way.

Not Taboo, but still in a minrity of relationships, and so are unusual. I can't help it that I will always notice a mixed "race" couple more than I will another.

I was once asked what attracted me to black men... My response was "It wasn't the color of their skin. I am attracted to men." Why, in this day and time, do we still look at the color of someone's skin. People should be looking at what's on the inside. Not the outside. I hope I live to see the day where everyone treats everyone as a person, not a color.
