The bright yellow 'Cycle Sol' operates like a normal pedal cycle but has a canopy lined with solar cells overhead. When the user pedals in the sunshine the rays charge up a battery which powers a small electric motor hidden in the back wheel.
This then propels the bike forward at speeds of up to 15mph. It also lowers the resistance in peddling to make it easier for the rider to cycle up hills.
The bike was invented by designer Miroslav Miljevic. 'I designed the bike as an eco-friendly piece of technology to help commuters.' he said.
Mr Miljevic, who is based at Z & Co Design in London, says that the motor can be fully charged while the recumbent bike is chained up outside on a sunny day. And when the sun isn't shining the bike can be charged up by plugging it into the electricity mains.
The Cycle Sol is in the concept stage at the moment but Mr Miljevic hopes to mass produce it once he has found a manufacturer.
'It is just like an electric bike but the motor runs on a battery that is powered by solar energy.

Im all for it but does it have to look so freaking silly? I would rather be seen on a moped.

Cool concept, but i wouldn't be caught dead on that.

I think my head is going to explode! Bicycles are pretty well designed as they are do they really require solar power?
-
it's just another convenient idea to keep americans feeling eco-friendly while still being unnecessarily lazy. it's still a pretty smart design though.

Agree with Beta boy too!

Please...can we get any lazier?
Just kidding, I want one...after they change the look. Good thing they haven't mass produced it.

I want a similar one, but I think the design is poor. Also I'd like to see new generation green products not:
http://www.dow.com/polyurethane/feature.htm
I see different advantages to such a mode of transportation... Like there are times to ride bikes for health and recreation... but some destinations require a specific level of hygeine... I don't want to be sweaty all day on the job, for instance... this would work during many weather conditions... as long as the battery is pre-charged, there is no problem... right?
-
cool concept and all, but being that cycling is already green? kinda weird juxtaposition here. I mean, it'd make sense to me if it was applied to a scooter or a vespa-like motor operated thing.
- A bike is a bike and I agree with the above comments. I suppose that if his design is intended for people that are incapable of riding/pedaling on their own, then that would be cool. -
another excuse for me to trash my racer bike

I agree, really who needs this? Bicycles have stood the test of time with multiple improvements, but this is just getting lazy. But if this is what it takes for people to get out of their gas guzzlers, I'm all for it.

...and if it rains?
A solution for seniors or the disabled perhaps, but suitable to their conditions? No - a great concept with no market.
Back to the drawing boards!

while that's a good idea, it should be used on something useful like cars or something. We can just pedal our bikes like we've been doing for years.
-
How about some "solar powered shoes"
... hey that's a great band name.
-
I like it.....and I aint worried about lookin good in it.....im too old for that

I just don't understand where people get these names from some times, Cycle Sol. What does the Sol stand for? Shit out of luck? Why not just call it the Solar Cycle or the Sun Rider or something that sounds just a little more interesting.

Pacman flashback.
A human is the only motor to be found on a bicycle as far as I'm concerned.
I'm already solar powered.
Ride a bike!
Ride on!

ankihanj writes,
"It charges the battery, buddy. I'd imagine it works under rainy conditions..."
Assumed as much. The people who would most benefit - don't. Unless we're regressing back to downtown rickshaws? Wouldn't Beijing be amazed to see that!
It's still a concept with no market. Who would buy such a critter?
