There are many zealous evangelical leaders in the U.S. who proclaim America was founded on Christianity and that their faith alone should determine the way the government runs -- on "Christian principles." But these high-profile evangelical Christian leaders are wrong.

    Damn straight!
The blinding arrogance of these people is absolutely infuriating.
They seem to think America was founded in the mid-to-late 1950s.

    A comment from the article:

"joshtheatheist said: I totally agree with this. The whole reason we broke from Great Britian in the first place was to get away from their church running government. If anyone forgot that, that pretty much answers your questions. Saying it was because it's the most popular is like middle school bull crap. Bjust because a lot of people believe in it sorry but your wrong seperation of church and state i think is one of the greatest FREEDOMES our country offers and i dont care what religion thinks you cant change it "

    I concur.

As not only someone who follows the teachings of Christ, but who is even in ministry, I have been trying to tell people about this concept for years.

There is hardly anything Christian about our government/nation. Sure we have many people who follow the Christian faith, but we have even more who are part of another type of christianity which is horribly off focus and has nothing to do with what the scriptures say. I'm tired of people saying they are Christians because they think it's just the proper 'american' thing to do.

I take pride in those that follow the same faith as me, but am horrified by so many politicians and celebrities that misrepresent my faith. It is what inspires me to show others the line between the nationwide social club and living true radical faith in love and peace to all people, everywhere.

It's time for people to start calling it what it is.

want to see some real craziness? start researching the free masons and see what they believe and how they've been involved in the history of our country.

I have always said its impossible to be Christian and be in the government. Jesus would NOT have gone to far, he would not steal, he would not lie and the list goes on and on. If you are going to follow Christ, you cant do it in public office. Politicians get greedy and lose their values, even if they started out with some.

A 90 year old lady just tried to kill herself because she was being evicted for being late on her mortgage...on the same day our government agreed to give reckless, greedy billionaires a $700 Billion dollar bailout.

Yup, sounds exactly what Jesus would do if he were running the country!

Anyone who has done any sort of reading or research knows that the United States is not a Christian nation. Those that say it is are either trying to take advantage of those that are ignorant or ignorant themselves.

Our founding fathers were clear, separtion of church and state. Nowhere in our constitution, or in their ideas as laid down at the founding of our nation was the idea of God, Jesus, or Christianity.

I am offended by the religious as they tend to cause more trouble, wars, deception, lies, and outright murder than any other group in the history of humanity.

Oh yeah, and they hold public office and try to tell our already dumb kids that dinosaurs and man walked together, that the earth is 5,000 years old, and men walked on water.... that too...

Separationof church and state... keep it in the curches where it belongs, and out of my schools, politics, policy, courts, and get it the heck off my money already!

you have the publics permission to anything.

Personally, I always make a distinction between our nation (the people) and our government (the institutions created by the people) because I don't see the two as being the same thing.

James Madison and our other founder fathers didn't want America to become a nation built on religion. So that is why we have a separation of church and state, but James Madison really opposed the idea because some of his friends were christians being persecuted by christians. So you have to draw a line where need be.

America is not a Christian Nation.
There isn't any Christianity about our Government and our Nation.
It's true, there are many who follow the Christian faith, but are even more that follows paths that has nothing to do with the scriptures.
Christianity is not the path to peace.
Anyone who has done any reading and or research knows that the United Sataes is not a Christian Nation.
I believe like our founder fathers, I believe in the separation of church and state, and it needs to stay that way.
Nowhere in the Constitution says that the founding of this nation was the idea of God, of Jesus, or of Christianity.
The religious people have caused more trouble, wars, deception, lies and outright murder than any other group in the history on mankind.
Keep the church in the churches and out of the schools, politics, policy, courts and off of the money.
    Most religions is propaganda.
Personally keep the separation of church and state. Our nation was built on separation of church and state, the way our founder fathers intended it to be. The church has no business in our State Government and in our Nation.
    So Mote It Be.

When our founders wrote the Declaration of Independence in 1776, they declared that America was to be a nation under God's authority. They did so by saying,
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that all men are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights. . . . That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among men."
All men did not evolve into equality, nor were they endowed by governments with these rights. In subsequent years the Supreme Court interpreted this to mean that governments were instituted, not to grant rights to people, but to defend them from anyone who might usurp those God-given rights. They ruled that governments could grant only privileges, and that only God could grant rights.
After the vote for Independence had succeeded in 1776, Samuel Adams said, "On this day we have restored the Sovereign, to whom alone men ought to be obedient. He reigns in Heaven, and . . . from the rising to the setting sun, may His Kingdom come."
Even James Madison, the "father" of our Constitution, said, "We have staked the whole of all our political institutions upon the capacity for mankind for self-government, upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God."

Do We Have A Christian Nation?
The fundamentalists are trying to infiltrate our government and make everyone see through their beliefs and make everyone believe as they do. This is not what the founding fathers wanted. The Bill of Rights was designed to go hand-in-hand with the Declaration of Independance to keep church and state separated. Religion does not belong in schools, courthouses or government buildings. More than half of the founding fathers were religious. This country, The United States of America, was not founded on Christianity. You can be religious as long you don't affect others. To be religious is your choice, but do not convert other people to what you believe. Each individual has the right to choose what, if any, religion that they want. I personal can not choose a religion for you. What you believe and what I believe maybe different, that's because we have that choice. You see, religion is a personal thing, not a world wide thing. You have the right to believe what you want. I,too, have the right to believe what I want to believe, as long I don't force my religion on you. Do you understand what I am saying?
