Teachers should not be prosecuted for having sex with pupils over 16, claim union bosses from NASUWT, claiming there should be a clear differentiation between "errors of professional judgement" in consensual relationships, and child abuse.

Intimate relations between teachers and students under 18 were made illegal in 2001, and professionals found guilty may be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for defying the law.

Should a teacher who has a relationship with a 17-year-old student be labelled a sex offender?

No. Why should teachers be treated any differently to the rest of us?

It might be unprofessional, or "not the done thing", but they certainly shouldn't be labelled sex offenders.

it should be OK so long as the teacher doesn't have the student in any of their classes

those kids need to earn their grades and they shouldn't be allowed to fuck their way through high school because their less attractive math teach has an unsuccessful mirage

I can see if 2 free thinking adults of 18 years of age or older made that decision, but 16? That's inappropriate. I can just picture my predatory civics teacher preying on all the sophmore girls at my old school right now.

In some situations it is appropriate, but usually it's not.
I don't think it's really sensible to say it always is or it never is.

Well its certainly not child abuse and it's extremely wrong to be labelled as such.
    so that has to change.

But should Teachers be having relationships with their charges? It's a matter for the school, not the government if they are older than the age of consent.

Oral Under the desk for an easy A. There have been College Professors who've lost tenure just for having relationships with their students. It's unprofessional behavior. Maybe after the student graduates.

Well, by the time somebody's 17 they should have thier common sense in place and they're no longer a child and we must respect that idividual's independance by then. Although, 'child abuse' aside for them, I don't think it's apropirate. Certain teachers/students may take advantage of it this. Any teacher within thier collage/university could threaten thier grades/education or the student will sieze the opertunity to get thier boyfriend/girlfriend to cheat in some certain cases. IU don't think it's worth it at all.

You have got to be kidding me. How are some of you thinking that this is okay?

If a teacher has sex with a student that teacher should be out of a job. Period. Does not matter one iota if the student is of consensual age.

  •

    you missed the point.

It's about whether they are child abusers or not.

@ cantucwearebrothers. honestly how is it any diffrent from anyone having sex with your daughter??? I mean sure they are older, but your daughter could have sex with anyone older than her?

i really don't think that they should be child abusers, sure it shouldn't be done to cheat through exams or course etc, but if there is genuine attractio there, who are we to stop that, god knows it's hard enought to find love in this world as it is.

I think teachers should be subject to the same laws that everybody else is, and sex with someone over 16 should be legal just as it is for the rest of the population. They call it the age of consent because it is about the individual making decisions for themselves - and if teenagers can do this about *other* people when they're 16 then surely they can do the same about teachers?

Been thinking about this most of the day, and if we ban teacher-pupil realtionships, then surely we should ban any realtionship where one party has a "postion of authority" over anyother! so work place realtionship are out.

lindseyIndigo, you took my thoughts and expressed them more eloquently than i could ever have managed and for that, thank you.

    @ Mattslaw

Do you think at 16 you made the best possible decisions for yourself? Teacher/student relationships can get very close. You're around them quite a bit. They confide in you, tell you about their lives, etc. Someone in that situation HAS to be the adult. There has to be boundries. So...who's responsible? Certainly not the adolescent with the still developing brain that is scientifically proven can't think through what the consequences of their actions will be?

Perhaps I am biased because I have a daughter, granted she's 12 currently, but she'll be within the "age of consent" shortly.

Hmm...I know this is going to go over big, but maybe the age of consent should be changed!?

I believe that if anyone is under the age of 18 they shouldn't be having sex.If it was a student and a student that would be a different story,I mean i know enough people having sex under the age of 18,but they're the same age.And yes if a teacher has sex with an under age student it is looked at more than a normal person.A teacher is supposed to be setting an example for younger people, not having sex with them.

there are morals and ethics to be considered, therapists cannot have relations with their patients and it should be so with teachers regardless of ages.
