King Abdullah of Saudia Arabia hosted meetings between the Afghan government and the Taliban, a source says.
The militia, which has been intensifying its attacks on the U.S.-led coalition that toppled it from power in 2001 for harboring Osama bin Laden's terrorist network, has been involved four days of talks hosted by Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah, says the source.
The talks -- the first of their kind aimed at resolving the lengthy conflict in Afghanistan -- mark a significant move by the Saudi leadership to take a direct role in Afghanistan, hosting delegates who have until recently been their enemies.

It's too bad this will not stop the attacks on U.S. forces. Both the Taliban and al Qaeda have nothing but evil in mind. Nothing is going to keep them from their stated goals of ridding the earth of infidels.

The Talibans call you "infidels", and you say they are "nothing but evil"; sounds pretty much the same to me.. Maybe progress will come the day we stop looking at the world as binary (good guys vs bad guys) and come around a table to discuss with the enemy, as the Saudis just did. Good job King Adbullah.

historically the intelligence agencies in pakistan have been funding both the taliban and al qaeda. in order to prevent the US from invading pakistan, they front like theyre sincerely helping us, while some people claim that theyre harboring terrorists and osama bin laden. my bet is that this is just another front and nothing will change.

@loganwallace: +1
Funny thing with the Talibans though, first they are in good use and recieve many $$$$ from USA for fighting the Red army back in the days of the Cold War.
Then later after 9/11 they are the total bad guys and the US wonders why they are so mad.
Who likes back-stabbers? Talibans don't
(no sympathy for Al Qaeda but no for the US gov either cause of their ways of doing foreign policy). -
Indoctrination makes people retarded.
How does this scenario play out when the conspiracy theory angle is applied?

Break ups are the worse :(

There is a big Sunni issue here. I am very skeptical. Like Obsidian said, we were supplying arms to the Taliban and what became their adversaries - the Northeren Alliance through the Pakistan ISA. The Saudis helped finance those weapons and until the very end the Afghan resistance did not know were the arms were coming from.
Ill believe this when I see it.

Callling it now- media control! The nation is desperate, bailout is passed, economy is horrible, al qaeda is threatening, a new president is gonna take the office (probably the one thats dominating media and promising change)...what does america need to support the new president and feel better about our governement and safety? A false sense of security and hope by hearing something like this.

Here's hoping that the talks are productive and it signals the beginning of the end for the conflict in Afghanistan.
-
Is this King Abdullah's gift to the world? Why did he allow so many Wahhabists into the world in the first place? I think this temporarily solves the problems of terrorism/fighting.
-
The sad thing is I have no idea what this means
This area of the world is so sadI pray that these people can find permanent sustainable peace rather than just moments of calm
-
It's great to hear that the Taliban is splitting from al Quaeda. Now how about supporting women's basic freedoms?

divide and conquer......well maybe not conquer but you know

Wow, one crazy group isn't talking to another crazy group, what a breakthrough. The fact that Saudi are even talking to them is the real story.
-
King Abdullah broke fast during the Eid al-Fitr holiday with the 17-member Afghan delegation -- an act intended to show his commitment to ending the conflict. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting
***this is in the rest of the article, and it shows that he is definately serious about peace

They broke up! :( Aww, was it something they bombed?
-

I'll admit I don't know too much about the situation...
It sounds to me like the Taliban is getting desparate and is looking to get money from the Saudis... I dunno, thats what I'd do-

Either this is a ploy for the people to lower their guard or the first step on the road to peace. Let us hope it is the latter.

The middle east and Asia have a War and Conflict Culture, they love issues, problems, fighting and crap. It WILL NEVER EVER END!!!! I would like to remind you, this has been going since thousands of years, before the bible, before Muslims, before anything! IT'S THE CULTURE!! And then, add Mohhammad which was a fighter for everything and killed how many people and promotes it... IT WILL NEVER EVER EVER End!

@majormajor
"women's basic freedoms?" what is their basic freedom? a peeled banana? or an un-wrapped candy bar? oh i see you must be talking about women covering them selves....why does it always boil down to women? Unfortunately, these same ethics were practiced by every other human being in the past, even us all. But the last 2 hundred years have totally destroyed the mind set of a common human being.
The one who abides by the very laws of morality are called "fundamentalists". I'm a proud US citizen but I see where the voices are coming from.
Topic - This is international politics of "interests". If you recall, pres. Bush and his administration used to say "we don't talk to terrorists, there can be no negotiations with the terrorists at all"!!
now what happened?
Just like i change my cloths, the policies are changed depending upon your requirements.
Thank you

OH YEAH! And if you believe this you believe mccain and palin's lies. Why do you think criminals cop a plea and disassociate themselves from their pals in crime? To save their own A----S!
