For 1,500 years, the Codex Sinaiticus lay undisturbed in a Sinai monastery, until it was found - or stolen, as the monks say - in 1844 and split between Egypt, Russia, Germany and Britain.
Now these different parts are to be united online and, from next July, anyone, anywhere in the world with internet access will be able to view the complete text and read a translation.
For those who believe the Bible is the inerrant, unaltered word of God, there will be some very uncomfortable questions to answer. It shows there have been thousands of alterations to today's bible.
The Codex, probably the oldest Bible we have, also has books which are missing from the Authorised Version that most Christians are familiar with today - and it does not have crucial verses relating to the Resurrection."
-
One wonders, then, who were 'God's' editors?

The truth comes out
The sheep finally realize the shepherd is a wolfDo you still follow?

there's only going to be 3 things different in this than what we have today.
1) the last half of the last chapter of the gospel of mark
2) the first few verses in the gospel of john chapter 8
3) something in the book of 1 john, i forget what right nowthe fact of the matter is is that there is no other document of antiquity that has the amount of validating sources to show that the text we have today is incredibly close to the original as the bible. research it yourself.
in summation, we christians have known about the Codex Sinaiticus for years, most translations today are based off of it and other documents that have been found which are about as old or older than the codex.

@ feh
Which version of the Bible are you referring to? There are so many, and they are often contradictory to each other. You do know, I presume, that Jerome wilfully mistranslated many passages and inserted things that were not in the original documents. You do know, I presume, that at the Council of Nicea, the four gospels that were retained for Canon were edited, truncated, and added-to, and that those gospels that were written at the time of Jesus by eye-witnesses were discarded and destroyed because they went against the political agenda of Constantine.
Christianity is a misnomer - it should be called Paulianity, for it has more to do with Paul's dysfunctions than Christ's teachings. That lecture in your video is totally biased. It is scholarly garbage and cleverly sold lies.
There is no documented evidence of the existence of Christ, only ex-post-facto beliefs, at best.
If the Bible, or the Koran for that matter, is truly the word of God or inspired by God, then God is not very intelligent and is profoundly dysfunctional as well as impressively imperfect.

Hmm, I wonder what new interpretations Bible scholars will be able to glean from this version, once it's fully assembled online. Interesting.
Pretty shocking in fact that it should've been divided like that in the first place. -
Bummer. I always thought the Lord hand-wrote every single edition of the bible himself, using his magical old-school bible typewriter... you know... because they totally didn't have computers back then.

It may change a few people's views on their religion, yes, but the more important thing here is that something that has influenced the lives of millions of people is being "re-taped" together. I think we should celebrate the fact that things like this are even being unearthed. This might not even be the oldest one that can be found!
I would love to see everything we have compiled and compared so we could see where it all spun from and learn more about how we got to this point.

...There is one great item in the Bible....it is also the cornerstone of nearly all living religions..and recognized by the majority of indigenous people of this planet...past and present.....the Golden Rule....makes for a short Bible....Golden Ruler....Will......

my understanding is that there was a problem in the first few hundred years after Jesus was crudified, not very good communication back then, mostly verbal teachings, which tend to change over time by region, as did handwritten letters, gospels, etc that we now call the biblle. different areas and different churches were teaching from different books, so the council of nicea collected all the writings of the time, cross referenced them, and otherwise decided what was the 'true' word, and what was to be excluded from the bible. It should be no surprise that an earlier version differs slightly, this is exactly why the council of nicea came up with the 'bible' as we know it, and it has not changed since. it is remarkable that the books of the bible are so similar, considering they were written with no collaboration or communication between the writers.

I can't wait to get a look at this. Sounds like it'll have plenty of extra ammunition to add to my arsenal. Debating the validity of outdated dogma with a blindly faithful hypochristian is so much fun.
No wonder the Bible tells you to have blind faith, and to look at anyone who disputes its word as a heathen-traitor to the church-government. It flat out, literally tells people to be sheep, for god's sake. The biggest problem with "the word of god" is the fact that Christianity became a cult, and then a political tool, after Christ died - which he expressly said he did not want. Not to mention all the merging that had to be done with the major brands of European paganism.
No wonder modern mainstream Christianity is so exclusive and judgmental and fearful - as a worldview, it has just as much, if not more to do with Germanic paganism (eternal torture for the damned, the end of the world is set in stone, and inevitable, blah blah blah) than anything Christ taught.
Europe was awash with Germanic barbarian kingdoms after the Roman Empire fell. The church had to regain its political power, so it started converting the Germanic kings, who in turn converted their subjects - brutally, a lot of the time. Many aspects of both religions merged. Just look up Hel, or Eastre, for that matter. Ragnarok and Revelations had no trouble screwing in the back of their parents' Volkswagens.
I'm rambling because of the coffee. Excuse me.But yeah, can't wait to read it.
PS
Just to be clear here, I'm talking about the general Christian Church as an institution, not the teachings of Christ.
Whatever you believe about his "divine origins," Jesus was well ahead of his time in the Western world. He and Buddha would totally be bff's. -
Morbib...why are so many waiting for or encouraging the demise of something billions believe in? No doubt they have been wrongs, however, show me what does not have that in its track record. Seems like we have so many waiting to point and go "Ha Ha" now what are you going to do? What ever the answer is, is it going to change any thing?

I believe it was Thomas Jefferson that whittled the King James version down to 1.5 pages, after he discarded what he considered unprovable text.

It seems also that most of the people who criticize any faith or belief system, is mainly so because they cannot follow it themselves. It is so much easier to live life by your own rules. Granted, there has been mistakes committed by people who belonged to different religions (from A to Z). But what people seem to forget too, is that Jesus in a non religious perspective was a peacemaker just as Gandhi. Why is there such outrage against him, I do not know. But they themselves fulfill his prophecy when He said that they will hate us because of Him. Sadly not everyone is willing to get past religious prejudice, maybe they were damaged by a terrible spokesperson of the faith, priest, etc. The problem really, is not the faith but people. The law is perfect, not men. That does not mean we should give up at pursuing goodness thru faith. After all, it is much easier to criticize somebody like a lot of us do, than to die and live for what you believe in, as Jesus did.

I don't look on this as an opportunity to put down what others believe. I think this is exciting simply for its historical value to finding out more about our past.

Aw...so much ignorant leftist extremism in here that's it cute. Many of you are just as bad as the right wing Christian extremists. Learn some balance.
-
peoples negative reactions to anything religious are based on abuses either seen or experienced. a sort of anti faith. if you devoted 5, 10, 20 years, or the majority of your whole life devoted to christian based beliefs, and then your priest turns out to be a child molester, or you find out you have been lied to, or robbed of you contributions to your chuch... the list goes on and on. experienced christians of 50+ years have left religion behind, and its no wonder.

The Christian God does not exist. The God and Goddess, known as: Lord and Lady, are the Creators of Earth and life. You and I came from the Earth and to the Earth we will return after death. I believe that everything has a soul/spirit that are alive, albeit, plants, animals, humans and other living things. At death I believe that the soul/spirit goes to the Underworld for rest and healing before going on into a new life and a new world at rebirth. My aim is not to convert anyone to what I believe. My aim is to let you know that there are more than one path for you to travel. You choose the path you want and that is pleasing to you. It is great if you meet other people that are like-minded as you are. The Christian Path is not the only true way, its just another path, and for me it leads to nowhere. I have chosen the path that leads to many worlds and to many lives. That path is The Pagan Path. I once walked the Christian Path, and I've found that it leads to nowhere. Now. I'm on the Pagan Path and it leads to many worlds and many lives. There is much more that I can say, but for now I will stop. Merry Meet and many blessings to all. So Mote It Be.

Good post! Many people don't know that the 4 Gospels found in the Bible are just a few. There were 96 other Gospels that were labeled heterodox and un-canonical by the Council of Nicaea in 325.
The Bible as it is found today is a document that has undergone tremendous revision and translations (often times poor ones at that) over hundreds of years. Over the years this has come to light as archaeologists find more and more Biblical material that isn't found in today's Bible.

what a bunch of bullshit....
again, as usual, one group is saying MY book is right and YOUR book is wrong... how stupid and cultish, but once you're in a cult, you can't be proven wrong by ANYONE!and the claim in the video about all the "proofs through 1500 years..." yadda yadda yadda... sure.. over 1500 years of editing, rewriting and whatever, all of his claims are "self-referential" ==== "everything in this book proves that everything in this book is correct."
unless you're in a cult, that is borderline insanity.
but REALLY amusing [although scary] to atheists.
enjoy your party.
ps... click the link to the original article.. the first comment is priceless!

The First Council of Nicaea anyone? :P

Globewatcher, anyone that decides Christianity is wrong based on a personal experience in which human beings (not God - if one exists) is using bad, horrid, atrocious logic. I repeat. Look outside yourself and use some balanced logic. Christianity may or may not be right. We weren't there 2,000 years ago (which, by the way, there IS evidence a Jesus Christ existed) so we cannot say for sure. That's fine...such is the purpose of faith. The problem is extremism and human stupidity - not the existence/non-existence of God.
