I lived in Taiwan for a few years. The relationship between the two different countries (taiwan and china) is a very delicate one.
This kind of thing is HUGE.
When Chine gets pissed it aims war heads at Taiwan and China is not known for playing nice.
-
The statement that this is for economic reasons is B.S., the money profited from a sale like this only helps fund the war in Iraq for a few weeks longer. Still, China is afraid that they won't be big bully anymore. Oh yeah.... and Free Tibet!

At a time when America has never needed Chinese money more - this?
Let's face it, after the debacle of NATO and Georgia, we are not going to WW3 to defend Taiwan from China. So provoking China accomplishes what?
It is certain that selling weaponry to Taiwan will be interpreted by China as a dangerous act of provocation. No different to China's idea of security than a Cuban Missile crisis. And what can they do to retaliate? Lots.
This roll of the dice creates a self-contradictory foreign policy.
Ever heard of G-2?
Unless you read "Foreign Affairs" (a journal for advisers to heads of state, policy wonks and so forth) I doubt you will be so informed.
The gist of the G-2 argument is this. America needs to partner with China, not fight China. Forget Europe or any other ally - China alone can help dominate the planet between two nations. Who is onside? For one look to the articles of Treasury Secretary, Hank Paulson, recent beneficiary of 700 billion dollars.
Why involve the Treasury Secretary? If you don't have the money to raise and advance an army the most your foreign policy can do is squeak. For the US to go it alone no longer is possible. The money needed now is Chinese and as our economy stagnates and stumbles in the quagmires of Iraq, Afghanistan and our slow-mo financial meltdown, only China can make continued global hegemony and for that matter stability possible.
Are you going to be told this by the candidates or FOX or CNN or any of the corporate media outlets?
Not likely, because this is long term Policy and what such a radical shift in policy suggests is that the people who want to contain China militarily (and continue to sell weapons abroad regardless of the downsides) are in direct opposition to those who want to moderate China with closer economic ties. .
If you go back 50 years it would have been as radical a step as saying to the Soviet Union - 'Why are we making all this fuss and wasting all this money! You do this job, we'll do that job and together we'll own the planet.'
