Honeymoon funded by trash

A couple spent three months collecting and recycling litter to pay for their honeymoon flights.

John and Ann Till, from Petersfield, in Hampshire, took thousands of cans and bottles to a recycling center at a nearby Tesco supermarket.

For every four recycled items, they earned a reward point which was then converted into BA air miles.

They amassed 36,000 miles, which they used to fly back in business class from their US honeymoon.

The Tills came up with the idea while buying petrol at Tesco in Havant, where an automated recycling unit that gives loyalty-card points had been installed for a trial period.

They had enough money for a Queen Mary 2 cruise to New York but could not afford the flights home, so the couple started scouring the streets of their home town for rubbish, clocking up the miles for their dream honeymoon.

There was enough rubbish out there to fly us to the moon and back

This is awesome! More companies need to offer rewards like this. Staying green has gained a lot of importance lately, so any way companies can make a difference is better than nothing.

What a fantastic idea - and in only 3 months too! I guess most supermarket schemes like this bank on people not being determined enough to bank so many points while stocks last. I wanna try now though...

as amazing as this is.. i don't think my soon to be fiance will want to be seen scouring the streets for three months in order to finance our honeymoon.

That's bloody clever - good for them! It just shows there is extra money to be made out there - you just have to be inventive and, I imagine, pretty desperate!

Being desperate does help, but it's commendable; money saving, eco-friendly, and smelly, what more could you ask for in a honeymoon?

    Smelly, but profitable!

This rocks. My husband and I recycled copper wire and took a nice chunk of spending money on our honeymoon. =D

I hope these two have lots of kids.

Their level of intelligence and grit already is well established.

Now whjere they can visit next that isn't already bankrupt or over due, and how they'll find some companies still solvent enough to get them there ... that's a bit of a puzzle!

I like this idea. Perhaps couples should consider joining together to help the environment before wedding. It will allow time to build better relations with your significant other while making a positive impact on the community and environment!

Congrats! Mother nature will marry you guys now. heh heh.

But It's a shame we can't recycle with out wanting a reward. But i get it. It paid for a good cause.

I love reading stories about people who really earn something. They devoted a huge amount of time, recycling rubbish, and probably enjoyed their honeymoon all the more for the sweat and labour that went into getting it.

    Mattslaw,

"they receyled yes, but do you really think they did enought to counter-act the fat they FLEW TO THE USA?"

Point taken, but that would have been quite a walk home all things considered.

Do you think there's enough trash out there to pay for me to go to college?

Probably, I'll give it a try.
