Seems like the UK may be getting ready for civil unrest due to financial strife, just like here in the United States.

Police officers from forces across the South West are to receive training to prepare them for riots.

Police horses, dogs and a helicopter will be used to add realism during the two-day courses at Moreton-in-Marsh Fire College, Gloucestershire.

Some officers will take on the role of hostile crowds in real-life scenarios such as raves, demonstrations and disorder at football matches.

Missiles and petrol bombs will be thrown as part of the training.

Officers attending the training will come from Gloucestershire; Dorset; Wiltshire; Avon & Somerset; and Devon & Cornwall Constabularies.

Inspector Mac McGarry, of Gloucestershire Constabulary Operational Services, said: "These are very important and impactive sessions because it is essential all officers allocated to the Public Disorder Unit experience the sort of difficulties they will encounter in real-life situations.

"It also gives us the chance to test the command structure we have in place and the inter-operability with other forces."

wow. Wait a minute...why are you testing this? Crowd control...state controlled? Who's in charge here? what happened to peoples right? If you didn't take peoples rights/liberties away to begin with you wouldn't have the angry mob to deal with....dumbf%$ks. I would say some government cutbacks are in order.

We are living in a police state and UK, too. My question is how can we get the police on our side? Surely they don't want to live in a police state. They have families, too.

The leaders are expecting some unrest, I do declare! I guess they know they pissed off a bunch of people by seriously taking away rights..and money!

Calm down, this kind of courses happen all the time, not only now. For instance in the Netherlands you can even sign up to participate as a rioter.

Its stories like this that fuel the stock market jitters and spread panic, which results in downturn / crashes.

    Self-fulfilling prophesy.

Doesn't it seem sensible for the police to be trained in handling hostile crowds? If I was at a football match and fans started fighting each other, I'd want the police to be able to handle that in an effective, responsible way.

Call me naive but just because they're training (as they've done for years) I don't expect I'll be clubbed on the head by the state and disappeared next time I'm walking down the street.

Looking at the other, non-conspiracy side of the argument, if this sort of training means another Hillsborough can be avoided, that's surely a good thing?

I was at a "party" in Manchester this summer that got a little out of hand, I've included a video for your viewing pleasure - skip it on to around 3 minutes. Eventually the entire street was full of people having a mighty fine time, it was on campus and it was a Saturday.

To "crash" the party, the police showed up in full riot gear and just started smashing people with their batons. I saw at least three (intoxicated) girls get hit and my friend had some real damage done to his knee. It was anything but a proportional response to meet none violence with violence.

I'm not s surprised at the fact that they're getting the training, as the implication in the article that this kind of training is not common practise in the police force. Surely the police always have to be ready for riots, not just at times of financial instability?

    I'm not expecting a riot.

What do the police know that I don't?

I personally, with my own eyes, witnessed a convoy of Army tanks and military trucks that stretched over 2 miles long down a country road about 40 miles east of Atlanta, in a town called Madison. The closest base to that location is atleast 100 miles away.
The news also showed a stretch plastic coffins (750,000 estimated) along a railroad track in the same town. What's really happening ?

The 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team has spent 35 of the last 60 months in Iraq patrolling in full battle rattle, helping restore essential services and escorting supply convoys.

Now they’re training for the same mission — with a twist — at home.

Beginning Oct. 1 for 12 months, the 1st BCT will be under the day-to-day control of U.S. Army North, the Army service component of Northern Command, as an on-call federal response force for natural or manmade emergencies and disasters, including terrorist attacks.
