At least 85 people were wounded Tuesday when police fired tear gas on anti-government demonstrators in Bangkok, a medical official said, including seven people who were critically injured.

Nanthana Mesprasart, supervisor at Bangkok's emergency medical response centre, told AFP the injured had been taken to three hospitals for treatment, and one man had lost his left foot in the police crackdown.

She said that most of the injured were protesters, but at least two were police officers.

Police fired tear gas at about 6.20am (2320 GMT Monday) after anti-government demonstrators massed at Bangkok's parliament building to try and prevent the new cabinet addressing the house.

Protesters have been camped out at the main government compound since late August, but thousands began moving to the nearby parliament building late Monday.

Thailand's deputy prime minister has quit over the clashes. Chavalit Yongchaiyudh handed in his resignation letter as a gesture to take responsibility for the violence.

"Since this action did not achieve what I planned, I want to show my responsibility for this operation," he wrote.

i love how easily other cultures will form protests, in Britain you have to get permission from the police before you can protest
