Boston University's College of Engineering is launching a program, under a National Science Foundation grant, to develop the next gen of wireless technology which uses visible light instead of radio waves.
"Imagine if your computer, iPhone, TV, radio and thermostat could all communicate with you when you walked in a room just by flipping the wall light switch and without the usual cluster of wires," said BU Engineering Professor Thomas Little. "This could be done with an LED-based communications network that also provides light - all over existing power lines with low power consumption, high reliability and no electromagnetic interference. Ultimately, the system is expected to be applicable from existing illumination devices, like swapping light bulbs for LEDs."
So does this mean the end of networking as we currently know it...

That is an amazing idea. I don't know what needs to happen for this to come true, but it would really make life so much easier!

Sounds very cool and eco-friendly. LEDs are set to be the main source of lighting in the near future as they're much more power-efficient (and therefore cheaper).
What happens if you want to browse the net with the lights off though?
-
Yeah but are they energy saving lightbulbs?
-
"Hey turn the light back on, I'm torrenting"

Imagine if it was linked up to project some multi media advertising into your head? HHHMM sounds great. Why don't we just quit thinking for ourselves all together.
These people are gonna fry my brain. Thought my Helio phone was enough all ready...

No rest for the wicked - its going to be hard to find anywhere that's wifi-free soon. Upping the guilt factor and making us do the work we would rather shirk ;)
Another example of this recent trend is: Ryanair will soon be offering passengers (who can't keep their mouths shut for the 45 minutes it takes to get to Amsterdam) the chance to make mobile phone calls during the flight.
OK, rant over.

This would be neat

This will revolutionize 3rd world countries
Now we need wireless energy transfer
Which is in a basement somewhereAnd we can activate the entire world
I bet Tesla would be proud
And scared shitless -
Man, i love science and human creativity and thoughtful innovation.....super freakin cool

Does it come in strobe light... which intermittently turns off your internet?

Neat idea....if only there wasn't so much stifling of great innovative thinking. We wouldn't be in the stone age of technology right now.
I just want the light to be like that...green and eerie...that would rock.
-
How is it that people get bent out of shape and scared of these ideas? Jump on board it's 2008 already. Anything that will make life easier and uses the tools we're already using instead of always reinventing things sounds great to me.

Great idea doubt it will be executed any time soon. In time Government may fund realistically in homes every one probably around 2020 or so wont be done for at least 15 years + before its in putted into all houses. Great idea though. This will need a lot of work and cost a lot of money to be implemented, i'm not sure that it would have no interference but you know. Picture is wicked awesome which i had a green bulb like that it would spurt my rock waves everywhere :)

This may open up a whole new vernacular for using the Internet. There will be "WiFI Hot-spots" for places with WiFi and "WiFi Dark-Spots" for places without.
Now only if the government doesn't use this to spy on us.

I really should of done better their! Damn it!
-
I think this is really interesting because now people are use light to communicate through WiFi. This sounds so cool and i hope it happens soon.
-
Finally, now I can stop mooching off the WiFi at my local McDonald's.
