A UK-Japan team found the 17-strong shoal at depths of 7.7km (4.8 miles) in the Japan Trench in the Pacific - and captured the deep sea animals on film. The scientists have been using remote-operated landers designed to withstand immense pressures to comb the world's deepest depths for marine life.
On film, the fish, known as Pseudoliparis amblystomopsis, can be seen darting about in the darkness of the depths, scooping up shrimps. Monty Priede from the University of Aberdeen said the 30cm-long (12in), deep-sea fish were surprisingly "cute".
The deepest record for any fish is Abyssobrotula galatheae, which was dredged from the bottom of the Puerto Rico Trench at a depth of more than 8km (5 miles) in 1970. However, it was dead by the time it reached the surface. The previous record for any fish to have been spotted alive was thought to have stood at about 7km (4 miles).

Are those fish are the offspring of sharks? Many sharks lay their eggs in the sea bed and left them in the deepest part of the sea to secure their lives.

We don't know shit about the earth!

What a paradox: humans war and argue thinking we know and own everything, while the world holds more than we can comprehend, much less possess.

Makes you wonder what's really down there
I think we're all controlled by an ancient psychic megaoctopus
But that's just my opinion -
Ya'll have to go see Planet Earth, you'll be amazed and see the Earth in a new way!

They are pretty cute.

talk about the bottom of the food chain... um- lets try not to screw up the oceans- the dead spots in them already reminds me of soylent green, and lets face it, with 6 billion humans, we could throw a few to the sharks to spur oceanic health. I vote we start with wall street.

I wonder how they can survive at those pressures.

Thats amazing i thought all fish that live close to the bottom of the ocean were like jelly fish with no bones and distinct shape.

I wonder if their are any deep sea tanks in an aquarium

I always say we need to fund ocean research as least as much as we do our space programs!! They found 100s of new species off Australia just in the last few months!!
Good Find! JanaPokana

They look like pollywogs.
And yes, we need to try and save these oceans. They are the lifeblood of the planet. -
I'd expect them to look a bit more ugly. Those are way to cute to be hidden!

wow !! so deep and alive how do they survive the pressure sea science at its best, must be prehistoric and survived all that ice age and global warming
-
five miles?? I figure that's like 11,000 pounds pressure per square inch.
No wonder it's hard (and expensive) to go there!
Great pictures, and great reporting.

They look like baby frogs. ryt noh? ^^ i wonder ancient sea dinosaurs still down there. my opinion.~

This "new" species of fish is actually quite beautiful. "New" because who truely knows how long they have been there.

MAN, WHAT A MOTHER NATURE..MAYBE WE ALL SHOULD JUST STOP ARGUING AND THINK HOW FAR DO WE KNOW ABOUT OUR WORLD? IF WE START TO COUNT, THE PERCENTAGE OF IT WILL NEVER HIT MORE THAN JUST 5%. REALIZE EVERYONE,LEARN FROM MOTHER NATURE...SUCH A CUTE FISH HOLDS FAR MORE BETTER CAPACITIES THAN ANY STRONGEST CIVILIZED MAN...

Do you think they are registered voters?
-
It would be interesting to study the visual capacity of these fish. Many deep-sea fish are blind, due to lack of photon stimulation
-
i wonder what they taste like, they are eating shrimp,so they must be good.just kidding.but i agree with previous poster who wanted to use Wall Street plunderers as shark chum
