Heck I'll admit that I've done it, mostly to avoid getting tugged into conversation by weirdy beardies in bars, or when I'm scared of starting a conversation in a new situation - now it's your turn to confess: do you communifake? Why do you do it?
-
I've done it! Mostly in order to look incredibly busy to the creeper trying to catch my eye at the bar or on the bus...
-
so if im not talking on the phone i should feel like an alone loser?
uhmm this explain so much, my brain and the tricks it plays on me! -
Why pretend to text someone, most phones have simple computer games on them to pass the time.
Maybe girls cant find their way through the menus to the good stuff and just pretend to be texting instead.
-
That'll be it Jon, just too many complicated buttons for our teeny brains to handle.
I don't pretend to text people necessarily - I just hold and read my phone so I look terribly busy if some weird guy is trying to make conversation on a bus, or if I'm going somewhere big and scary and want to take my time checking out my surroundings before I decide where to sit or whatever. If we could still bloody smoke indoors then we wouldn't all need to have pretend conversations.

This is so true, I do this when I don't want to talk to that creepy guy on the street.

It's ideal when casing banks, stalking victims and creeping up on hot cattle.

I'll bet the young & famous crowd is super-guilty of this. If they are photographed without phone-in-hand, their "popularity" stock drops. I KNEW Paris had to be faking. There's no way one person can spend that much time on a blackberry.

I'll admit it, my phone has become a good excuse in avoiding an awkward conversation.

I do it all the time. I hate having to help perfect strangers waiting for the train.

We do this while we supervise jr high dances. The kids think we're busy, but we're actually paying very close attention. Keep your distance boys!! =D

the security guy in my office talks and talks and talks and doesnt shut up. a simple 10 min cigg break turns into an hour lunch break. so i do pretend to talk on the phone when walking past him to avoid a long, meaningless convo.
-
You know what's funny when you see someone trying to look busy on the phone? When it rings.

I've done it to avoid talking to someone. Haven't you ever been singing your head off in the car, and notice that someone is looking at you so you try to play if off like you're talking on the phone...yeah...thought so.

I've never faked a phone conversation or text, but only because I would be mortified if I got caught!

Lol, Absolutely!
And I'm the kind of person to laugh, point and tell the nearest stranger what just happened in a situation like that. -
That's not the only thing they fake more..... ;)
-
No communifaking here. I don't really care if I am alone in a bar or pub. I like not having anyone around me sometimes. I quite frequently turn my phone off or leave it in my car overnight.
If I don't want to talk to someone, I just make it obvious. Not in a mean way or anything. Hiding behind electronics just doesn't make any sense to me and seems a bit cowardly.
-
I try not to do it, or at least do it less. For me, it's more of I need something to do rather than look like I'm speaking with someone.
-
"Maybe if I look busy He won't come over and talk to me.... ahhh... nope... still happened... damn it!"

Why am I not surprised? I guess they do it to not feel useless. Everyone nowadays has a lot of pressure to look "connected" and "busy" and ladies lead the way in this game of fakeness.
Personally I play chess on my phone when I'm really bored. Sometimes I try to talk to the person next to me, but the problem is that some people can't hold a conversation for their life...

I actually look at my pictures, while I pretend to be on the phone.

I used to play Tetris on my phone and move really fast like their was something really urgent when I saw some of my teachers on campus out of class.

I always laugh and point out to my wife when some chic is going into a retail store (especially Wal-Mart). As soon as the chic is halfway from her car to the store's front doors out comes the cellphone, and to her ear it goes. It's so obvious that one of the following is happening:
(a) she did NOT just get a call
(b) she is NOT actually calling anyone
(c) she IS incredibly insecure and full of shit
(d) any combination of the above
So, here is my call to action. The next time you see a chic with a cellphone yell outloud "That woman is a fraud! Her phone is off, but she's pretending to be talking on it!"
Or, go up to store management and say "I just heard that woman say on her cellphone that she was going to steal a shirt or something like that". Then watch as the girl is embarassed to admit that she's not really talking to anyone ;)

I press buttons 18 hours a day -- And I can't ever think that I would do it to pretend to be 'social'
I'm sure Bart Simpson would have a great rejoinder on this one. Eat a cow, or My shorts are your life. Or something like that.
