Critics say the U.S. bailout plan is an example of a double standard by the Bush administration, reports America’s McClatchy newspaper.
"If the Venezuelan government, for example, approves a law to protect consumers, they say, 'Take notice, Chavez is a tyrant!'" said Chavez, speaking in one of his recent weekly television shows.
"Or they say, 'Chavez is regulating prices. He is violating the laws of the marketplace.' How many times have they criticised me for nationalising the phone company? They say, 'The state shouldn't get involved in that.' But now they don't criticize Bush for having to nationalise (the biggest banks in the world.) Comrade Bush, how are you?"
Warming to his theme, he added: "Comrade Bush is heading toward socialism."
Nicaragua Congressman Edwin Castro agreed: "We think the Bush administration should follow the same policies that they and the International Monetary Fund have always told us to follow when we have economic problems — a structural adjustment that requires cutting government spending and reducing the role of government.”
Meanwhile, Bush said the bailout plan, that will see $700 billion of government money used to buy toxic mortgages, was necessary, although he said it stood against his personal philosophy.

This one cracked me up. This is where our country has fallen. A communist dictator calling our sitting president comrade and dammit, we can't say shit.
I think I'm losing my mind. I can't stop laughing, the world has gone TILT !

What's so wrong with being socialist? Besides Bush is not even close to being a socialist.
-
The article should mention that what Nicaragua Congressman Edwin Castro said about cutting government spending was irony.
Raven6, Chavez is certainly not a dictator; he was elected by the people democratically, and although he is hated by many because he is a radical, he is still supported by the majority..
Socialist concepts come to save our economy when the free market fails… and it isn't the first time (1929). Economic liberals always want the profits to be private, minimize taxes and redistribution, and then they come and cry for tax-payers’ support when the system fails. what a hypocrisy... Chavez is off because that true socialism would also share the gains with the people, not just the losses.-

Oh for crying out loud...if anything it was the very opposite of socialism.
The ideals of socialism focus on giving "handouts" (or, in reality, aid) to the middle and lower classes in need.
Socialism does NOT focus on giving handouts to the middle class. That is government-backed corporate capitalism, not socialism or communism.
Thank you.

government-backed corporate capitalism
agreed.

Our government takes from the people.. and gives to the largest corporations. Then it gives the largest corporations the breaks in taxes.
What do we call that actually?
-
My apologies, I don't know much about Venezuela and lost my mind for a bit there.
Not that it's returned because as to what we should call it then, I lean towards, "Taking it in the Shorts." or the "Give, Then Bendover and Give Again" ... ??? ... or the "What the Hell Happened to Us."
We was robbed.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no.... it's not SOCIALISM...
It's FASCISM.
Come on guys, get your insults straight.
It just takes a little trip to Wiki to come up with the following:
Facsism is a totalitarian nationalist and corporatist ideology. It is primarily concerned with notions of cultural and social decline or decadence, and which seeks to achieve a millenarian national rebirth by exalting the nation, as well as promoting cults of unity, strength and purity.
Various scholars attribute different characteristics to fascism, but the following elements are usually seen as its integral parts: nationalism (including national socialism, socialism, national syndicalism, along with collectivism and populism based on the nationalist values); totalitarianism (including dictatorship, major social interventionism, and statism); third way (including class collaboration, the economic ideology of corporatism, economic planning,) and militarism. Fascism opposes communism, conservatism, liberalism, and international socialism.
Or maybe Hugo of the Large Ego is just projecting a little bit of himself?
-
If you ask me socialism doesn't sound half bad. I believe that as long as there are good men running the government then the government should be more envolved with all market places. I repeat "Good Men".

American hypocrisy is always fun to point out.

For the right wing, hypocrisy and double standards are just means to an end, tools of the trade.

Doesn't the root word that anchors socialism suggest social understanding??! No, no, no, NO! Bush shouldn't even be allowed the nicety of being deemed a socialist.
More like out of touch SOCIALITE!!!
-
Terms like 'socialism,' 'Communism,' and 'Capitalism' are used so loosely nowadays, they've lost their original meanings.

He knows the Bush crime cartel well...
And so should we ;)First they stole 2 elections… the first by perverting the supreme court…nothing happened…Then 9-11 & a war based on a 1000 lies… nothing happened… they proceeded to shred the constitution, kidnapped imprisoned & tortured the world over, spied on all of us & fired the best US attorneys… nothing happened…conducted a thinly veiled ethic cleansing during Katrina…nada…now they are taking us to the cleaners…
Is there a limit to the damage this executive branch can inflict to the USA ?
It seems not !
