The Health Protection Authority (HPA) cautions against being closer than 30cm (1ft) to some compact fluorescent (cfl) bulbs for long as the energy-saving light bulbs could cause skin reddening because of ultraviolet light emissions.

The HPA said it was prompted to investigate the bulbs after being approached by groups representing people who suffer from light sensitivity issues.

The health experts said that UV light equivalent to being outside on a sunny day is being emitted by some bulbs, but if the coil is not visible the issue is prevented. They added there is no evidence that such bulbs pose a cancer threat.

"We are not saying these could cause cancer," said HPA chief executive Justin McCracken. "At the exposure levels we are talking about the worst effect that we believe there is as result of our investigation is that people could have some short-time reddening of their skin."

"...some short-time reddening of their skin."

Isn't that just like a suntan...?

Awww, our poor skin! These were made because they were better for the environment,... not because they were better for us! There is a difference.
And, the proverbial "they" says cfl's are bad for us?!!? MOST THINGS IN OUR LIVES ARE BAD FOR US!!! This is just motivation for those who deny Earth's health crisis!

It's obviously time to stop thinking only of ourselves,...
And think about the much, much bigger picture.

we as a spesies are adapting to our environment

if we act all scared of uv rays and use an umbrella all the time then we wont adapt to there more prominent presence

don't be scared you will adapt

Well... I thought everyone knew that. Most fluorescent bulbs emit UVA and UVB rays. I use them for my turtles to replicate the sun.

its also documented that if one breakes one needs to evacuate the vicinity due to the mercury vapors can cause brain damage or even death, you would then need to contact hazmat to come and clean it up... so is it good for the environment if it kills you ? they want you to think so ...

Suntans? That's the least of our problems with this type of lamp...

Compact fluorescent bulbs may be more energy efficient, but disposal is another issue. They contain mercury, which builds in the water table when put in a landfill. Millions of people have decided to switch to this "Green" alternative...I'm sure all of the people that rushed out to Wal-Mart to stock up are not reading the fine print when discarding them.

Read up, and discard this type of bulb appropriately .

If someone is afraid of getting burned by flourescent bulbs just buy led-lightbulbs instead since they are more power suffient and has a longer lifespan and generates less heat too (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LED_lamp).

Those bulbs produce the most hideous light possible. Living with them is like being inside a damn bug zapper.
