Google's very own satellite, the GeoEye-1 is set to take a load of amazingly good resolution pictures for Google Earth - good enough even to read car number plates from orbit (though Google won't be allowed to access those images for security reasons). Google shares the GeoEye-1 with the American National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, which collects and analyses geographical data for national security purposes, and who no doubt will be keeping a high-res eye on what Google can and can't post, though it is hoped that this latest satellite will allow Google Maps to display higher-resolution images of rural areas that they previously couldn't get good quality images for.

The above image is GeoEye-1's first capture for Google.

The boys at Google have been a tad busy of late. Seems like there's a new announcement every day.

A Google SATELLITE? These guys started as a search engine, what geniuses! Real-time satellite capture has only got to be a few years away.

Google already has a real-time live feed. the public just can't access it for security reasons. They are always watching!!!

This is awesome. My whole county is low resolution. As far as big brother goes, they're not really worried about you unless your doin something pretty bad. Honestly, some crazy shit would have to be going on in your back yard for the NSA to be interested in using a sattelite against you.

As long as they can't prove where I was last Tuesday night, I have no problem with this.

depends on what is considered 'pretty bad' by those in power. you'd think you'd have to do something 'pretty bad' in order to be pepper sprayed, beaten and arrested, or to be held in an offshore prison camp without charge, but it's all pretty arbitrary, which is why we have (or are supposed to have) civil protections

so google can check your number plate but 'aren't allowed'? haha, that's like giving a kid a toy and saying "don't play with it"

Why do they need a satellite anyway? For an online map service? pretty thin...
