Panic attacks: Voters unload at GOP rallies

The unmistakable momentum behind Barack Obama's campaign, combined with worry that John McCain is not doing enough to stop it, is ratcheting up fears and frustrations among conservatives.

And nowhere is this emotion on plainer display than at Republican rallies, where voters this week have shouted out insults at the mention of Obama, pleaded with McCain to get more aggressive with the Democrat and generally demonstrated the sort of visceral anger and unease that reflects a party on the precipice of panic.

The calendar is closing and the polls, at least right now, are not.

With McCain passing up the opportunity to level any tough personal shots in his first two debates and the very real prospect of an Obama presidency setting in, the sort of hard-core partisan activists who turn out for campaign events are venting in unusually personal terms.

"Terrorist!” one man screamed Monday at a New Mexico rally after McCain voiced the campaign’s new rhetorical staple aimed at raising doubts about the Illinois senator: “Who is the real Barack Obama?”

"He's a damn liar!” yelled a woman Wednesday in Pennsylvania. "Get him. He's bad for our country."

At both stops, there were cries of, “Nobama,” picking up on a phrase that has appeared on yard signs, T-shirts and bumper stickers.

And Thursday, at a campaign town hall in Wisconsin, one Republican brought the crowd to its feet when he used his turn at the microphone to offer a soliloquy so impassioned it made the network news and earned extended play on Rush Limbaugh’s program.

“I’m mad; I’m really mad!” the voter bellowed. “And what’s going to surprise ya, is it’s not the economy — it’s the socialists taking over our country.”

After the crowd settled down he was back at it. “When you have an Obama, Pelosi and the rest of the hooligans up there gonna run this country, we gotta have our head examined!”

Such contempt for Democrats is, of course, nothing new from conservative activists. But in 2000 and 2004, the Republican rank and file was more apt to ridicule Gore as a stiff fabulist or Kerry as an effete weather vane of a politician.

“Flip-flop, flip-flop,” went the cry at Republican rallies four years ago, often with footwear to match the chant.

Now, though, the emotion on display is unadulterated anger rather than mocking.

FYI, Bush and his cronies' bailout plan was very socialistic. Weren't these haters living under a rock to realize that?

Yes, oh Yes, the bailout was totally a socialistic act, Duh!! These people just repeat whatever they hear, they don't really try and put 2 and 2 together. Another thing, If I were running for office I abso-fucking-lutely would not allow or encourage such vicious, slanderous and racial remarks. However, in the McFake and Failin camp that is their rallying cry!! How pathetic and disgusting!! I think instead of asking who the real Obama is, they should dig deep and look at themselves and ask that question!! Awful, just awful!!!!

Bailout =:socialism. Exactly! Free market economy!!!

But Repubs becoming angry? Say it aint so Joe Sixpack!

I think the Repubs at the top are backing out on purpose. No one can fix the mess we are in, NO ONE. Not the Repubs, not the Dems, no one. Hell is coming to breakfast. I think the upper eschelon of the Repub ticket is pulling out and letting the Dems have this one. SInce it canot be fixed, they will not get blamed, but they will be able to point to Obama in four years and say, "see? he made it worse".

Not a bad strategy if you ask me, and quite typically Republican.

These retard conservatives lost all credibility. We gave them chances in 2000 and 2004, and their candidate is now doomed to be one of the worst presidents of the United States.

    Go away. You're fired.

This just proves that Republicans really don't understand the economy at all.

The bailout was necessary -- as evidenced by the fact that Bush himself supported it knowing full well that it was hugely, hugely unpopular with his base.

So why did he do it? Why do something that he knew would piss off everyone in the base who wanted to vote for McCain?

Because it needed to be done.

This reminds me of people booing the Fire Dept for putting out a fire and screaming, "No more water! Water is SOCIALISM!"

Um, it's not that simple. It's not so black and white.

I would love to ask any of these pissed off Republicans ranting and hysterically screaming about socialism if they know what a credit default swap is, how it works and how it pertains to the economic crisis. I'm pretty sure they would say they don't know, but then rant about how the bailout is socialism and Obama is a Muslim terrorist.

"This American Life" did an excellent and extremely informative podcast on the economic meltdown....what happened....why....and why a lot of experts believed the bailout was absolutely necessary.

It's definitely worth the hour to listen to the experts break it all down and explain things in layman's terms.

Maybe they should start playing this at McCain rallies to help people better understand?

It's only mccain's herd that is freaking out. What's that say about the man and his followers?

Birds of a feather, flock together.

What does all this say about what mccain will bring to the United States if he were President? Like I said, he has an untreated prisoner of war PSD that taints his take on reality - and look at the effect it has on the people who have given him their trust and support.

mccain / palin have clearly traumatized (rather than providing a steady calm hand to calm) there loyal following. What would this erratic and unstable mentality to to our country?

I think it's pretty clear: US of A, welcome to the Iraqi conflict at home!

By comparison, Obama has always sought to unify and provided a calm, cool, collected and thoughtful approach / response to every situation.

VOTE OBAMA / BIDEN - I trust them.

Rallies???? I thought you called gatherings like those "LYNCH MOBS"!!!!!

It is said that "people" at these "rallies" have verbally attacked black camera men. So it's safe to assume there's an anti-black sentiment being touted, not just against Obama/Biden....
