Although I am a lifelong republican, I applaud these guys for breaking a steroetype.

Where I am from, South Carolina, being redneck is an honorable affliction. It means many things. It may mean one is a hardworking manual laborer, with a passion for outdoor life. It may also mean that one enjoys a simple self reliant life, with emphasis on core values. Many self proclaimed rednecks I know in my region are doctors, lawyers, educators, engineers, and all are simultaneously hunters, conservationists, part-time subsistence farmers, or philanthropists.

In many parts of the country the word 'redneck' is, more often than not, a racial epithet.
I feel the same way about the word as, I suspect, many persons of African ancestry feel about the "N word." To clarify, if the label comes from a fellow redneck, then we share a common bond. However, if it comes from someone in anger, it is the most extreme insult I could receive.

Why is that? For those who don't know, perhaps our UK brethren, many use the term 'redneck' to mean an ignorant, racist southerner who is uneducated, uncultured, and poor.

How did the term 'redneck' come into usage? Many believe the term's use came about to refer to those who worked fields of crops. Through continuous bending and stooping in these fields, one's neck became red as a result of the hot sun.

Why are the 'Rednecks for Obama' important? This group is a symbol of what I feel Obama's campaign embodies. That is, the destruction of racially motivated stereotypes.

Whether or not Obama is elected our next president, let's make 2008 known as the year the United States tore down racial stereotypes to unite for the common good.

scoot82 - This is a really interesting and well written reflection on one aspect of the Obama campaign that I find so inspiring - same sort of thing that Donna Brazile was getting at.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us!

I love Cool rednecks. I didn't want to believe all those folks at McCain/Palin's lynch mob were rednecks.

McCain has proved himself a hate monger, a terrorist and a threat to America's promises...

I want to take this photo and distribute it across the entire southern half of our country! Don't get me wrong, I've met plenty of intelligent folks since I moved down here, but I've also met so many people who act as if they're PROUD of their own ignorance! They walk around with "self-proclaimed redneck" tee-shirts and confederate flag vanity plates, and when I ask if they're registered to vote, they reply: "I ain't votin' for no goddang president! They all crooks! I don't listen t'any of 'em!"

    Hooray to THESE Rednecks for...
    a) humorously (proudly?) embracing the term "Redneck"
    b) going the extra mile to break the redneck stereotype, not just in private in the voting booth, but in public.

You KNOW they're catching flack for this from some friends and family members... It takes a lot more balls for them to stand there in Redneck-land with that sign, than it does for the average "liberal" to go out canvassing...

    YOU GO, REDNECKS FOR OBAMA!

I knew somewhere out there, there was a redneck that could learn to see Barak for what he is. A man running for President...that's it.

Another possible contributing source of the term redneck comes from The West Virginia Coal Miners March or the Battle of Blair Mountain when coal miners wore red bandanas around their necks to identify themselves as seeking the opportunity to unionize.

Worker's rights, socialism, liberal, The little guy vs the Mining Company, need I say more?

Go Obama! See ya'll in PA for the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers.

Here is the definition of redneck:

    –noun
    1. an uneducated white farm laborer, esp. from the South.
    2. a bigot or reactionary, esp. from the rural working class.
    –adjective
    3. Also, red-necked. narrow, prejudiced, or reactionary: a redneck attitude.

Anyone who refers to themselves as a redneck shouldn't even be taken seriously.

Also, I think this is pretty racist. To me it's no different than an article that states...

    "N-words for McCain"

This is so few and far between. This has not changed my dislike for rednecks what-so-ever. They give conservatives/republicans a bad name.

scoot82 that is one of the best posts ive seen on Current!

I too come from a redneck town (Bakersfield CA) and I've always been proud of my redneck heritage. Hell Im listening to Buck Owens right now! I know redneck has a negative connotation...but to me redneck has always meant that you love hunting, fishing, drinking beer, country, sports and just hanging out with friends on the porch drinking cheap beer (thats what I did my last night in my home town). Im a total redneck at heart, but I am liberal, non religious, pro choice and pro gay marriage....its good to see other people breaking the redneck stereotype!

PS- I love me some good ol boys!

This is awesome! My family is made of northern 'rednecks' from the upper peninsula of Michigan (aka the U.P.) and they call themselves "yoopers." "Say yah to da U.P., eh!" but seriously, Obama represents change and hope for a nation thats hurting and however you define any of these "stereotypes" or whatever you want to call them, people of all races, colors, creeds, and persuasions are uniting behind him. VOTE FOR CHANGE!

At least some people are willing to break a stereotype and make fun of themselves at the same time.

I am still a fan of rid ourselves of the nature of stereotypes altogether, but maybe this is a step in the right direction...

What a great article......one stained when stupid arguments arise over people who can't respect each other's opinions.

Thank you for the article though.
