In the west we definitely need to put money into trees, and not only on our side of the hemisphere. Trees not only habitat for animals, but also give us oxygen to breathe. We need to set our priorities right.

Our monetary system only works if there are new resources constantly coming into the economy, that means more trees being cut down, more minerals being mined, and more oil being drilled.

It ensures that for all the money that banks lend out that doesn't really exist, there is at least some actual value coming into the system to back up a percentage of our money to actual resources.

This is why we need economic growth so badly - to keep up with the constantly increasing debts we're making for ourselves by loaning out non existent wealth. Sustainability isn't an option under this kind of system, so as scary as this financial crisis is, maybe we can create a new monetary system where sustainability of resources is the key priority.
