Sister Ardeth Platte, 72, and Sister Carol Gilbert, 60, came back from two weeks out of town to find letters from the Maryland State Police saying they had been wrongfully listed as suspected terrorists in a federal database in 2005-2006.
"To be labelled a terrorist is really very hard to hear and to accept, when your whole life has been one of loving nonviolence," Platte said.
Maryland State Police have sent letters to a total 53 activists wrongfully labelled as terrorists, inviting them to look at their entries in the database -- after which the files would be deleted.
The Dominican nuns broke into a US nuclear missile silo in Colorado in 2002 and painted crucifixes with their own blood -- earning Platte and Gilbert prison sentences of 41 and 33 months respectively.
"If they can label us as terrorists, they can label all kinds of people as terrorists," Gilbert said. "So then people become afraid to speak out against what the established government might be saying -- and that is the demise of democracy."

It's days like this that I start running all of the news items that come through through a quick search of The Onion, the world has become so utterly ridiculous that it might put satire out of business!
-
Holy shit (pardon the pun) - painted crucifixes in their own blood?? That is pretty out there. I don't think they should be on any sort of terrorist list, but perhaps some therapy ought to be suggested...
-
In-freakin'-credible, Nuns labeled as terrorists, this government is a joke.

Nuns?
Terrorists?
....nuns?
And this community is Christian?
And nuns "broke into a US nuclear missile silo in Colorado."
Well that just raises my confidence level about how well nukes are protected from real terrorists to new heights entirely.
-
I think all religionists are terrorists in the sense that they disrupt society. But, really, this is ridiculous, yet typical. Have you seen the number of people on the terrorist watch list, and how INaccurate most of the identities are?! Bush et al are insane!
-
They broke into a nuclear missile silo and painted crucifixes with their own blood, and then they say they have lived their whole life as one of loving nonviolence? Excuse me?
-
Disruption of society is not terrorism in and of itself. Terrorism is not a term that is in referrence to an ideology, it is a term in reference to methodology. If the methods are non-violent in nature, then the actions can not be accurately concidered "terrorism".
If disruption of society is terrorism, then Ghandi was one of the most successful terrorists of the 20th century.
-
I'm sure our government is a good at making mistakes on things like this, but I think that terrorist is a little far even for someone who painted crucifixes in their own blood. Ha ha.

Terrorists? Not hardly. Apparently terrorism to the government is not shutting up and letting them do as they please.

This is not the first incident where this government has placed citizen's names under a database just because of protesting. Mistake?? I don't believe it. Attention: Everyone..beware..our civil liberties are under attack..
-
It sounds like the plot of an awesome movie.

pressrecord,
Try and remain composed, briefly.
"wait...if you broke into a nuclear silo"
First, nobody seriously worries about nuns being dangerous, not under any circumstances - unless they somehow believe nuns can bring down God's curses.
If this is their contention it will not help differentiate them from witch hunters with a 14th century brain.
Second - isn't the more vital question one of National Security?
Please explain to me - how the hell did ANY group of females - ones not renown for their safecracking abilities, or commando training either - penetrate a nuclear silo's security?
Who blew it? This is the best we can do to protect nuclear material?
Third, you want to freak out? Imagine that it wasn't a couple of nuns who raided that facility.
That would be a very good time to panic.

i don't think anybody has pointed out that at least the government acknowledged the mistake and informed the women. this could have just as easily been covered up or still a mistake right now.
also, when you have that much data... i mean we're talking a crapload of data, something is bound to be wrong. all in all, i say congrats to the government for clearing this up and not covering it up.

Even though I did say that religion is a cause of many problems, I don't think nuns should be considered terrorist because they don't like nukes. I mean, can't our leaders call them heretics and we just act like that still has meaning in this day and age?
-
WoW this shows exactly how great home land security. I mean honestly all this "we need to violate your rights to protect you from 60-70 year old nuns, oh I mean terrorist" honestly this is getting sad.

OK, so this story looks weird. I don't think they used their blood on a Crucifix, I can't picture any of the Nuns hurting themselves... odd.
Aside from this, I find this story amusing and so Classic. Everyone will be considered a Terrorist from now on.
AIG and Lehman Bro, CEO's are far more "Terrorists" than anyone else. They should hunt them like Bin Laden.
-
When the true terrorists are the ones that only tell the truth, and the good guys are the ones that put thousands out of jobs and put millions in their pockets. The poor CEO's are considering themselves picked on because they cant have a house in every continent in the world. I would say that our priority's have become rather sceued to the right. Of course the president is looking like a dear caught in the headlights again. The group that is in charge now only have the special intrests at their fingertips and the religious types who many go to church on a weekly basis and scream about not having their brand of religion be considered the only way. Be proactive instead of reactive and beleive in the principle that god helps them that help themselves.
-
...You got to be kidding me.
-
excuse me? nuns and terrorism are like spots and stripes or oil and water... they don't mix!! you know the american government is looking for scapegoats when they arrest nuns. i mean come on!! NUNS?! this whole charade is ridiculous... someone's got some serious explaining to do!!

right because breaking into nuclear silos and making symbols in bloods is so the coolest new thing to do.
