From the article:
The ABC network has refused to air an advert produced by Al Gore's environmental group, ruling that its charge of US government favouritism to the oil industry is too "controversial" for television.
The TV commercial, part of the WE campaign run by Gore's Alliance for Climate Protection, was submitted for airing after this week's presidential debate between Barack Obama and John McCain - both of whom have vowed to limit greenhouse gas emissions if elected.
But ABC concluded that the advert violated its internal policy against "controversial" content during network-sponsored programmes, network spokeswoman Julie Hoover told the Guardian.
"All of our advertising is reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and the context of this particular ad was determined not to be acceptable per our policy on controversial issue advertising," Hoover said.
The WE campaign has since attracted more than 170,000 supporters to an online petition drive asking ABC to reconsider its decision.
The script of the advert is similar in tone to political speeches made by Obama and McCain during the election season. An unseen narrator states that climate change can be combated through wind and solar power as well as "end[ing] our dependence on foreign oil".
Over an image of a young child playing with blocks, the narrator continues: "So why are we still stuck with dirty and expensive energy? Because big oil spends hundreds of millions of dollars to block clean energy. Lobbyists, ads, even scandals. All to increase their profits, while America suffers."
An ABC email published on the blog of Grist magazine stated that the advert was rejected due to its split-second shot of the US Capitol building.
"Per our guidelines, national buildings may be used in advertising provided the depictions are incidental to the advertiser's promotion of the product or service," the email stated. "Given the messages and themes of this commercial, the image of the Capital [sic] building is not incidental to this advertising."
Cathy Zoi, chief executive of the WE campaign, called ABC's decision "outrageous" in light of US networks' frequent airing of adverts from Chevron, Exxon Mobil and other oil companies.
"As our country faces deep economic problems, we need to be able to have an honest debate about the root causes of our problem," Zoi wrote in an email to supporters of Gore's group on Wednesday.

Jan,
I for one am getting darn tired of them.
All they send me is e-mails asking for money.
They don't seem to realize that we are currently in a very bad recession and close to a depression.
I keep telling these folks that if they want my help they should start talking about how much we spend lighting up the night sky.
Light Pollution is the easiest form of pollution to control.
All you have to do is to ask yourself why we need good night lighting?
Mostly, to light up some intersections, roadways, and parking lots.
We currently (in the USA) spend some billions of dollars lighting up the undersides of birds, airplanes and clouds.
No need for it either...just wasteful.
Once you realize, it's easy to turn off uneeded lighting and replace those lights that are needed and are wasteful with full cutoff fixtures that will direct light where it is needed.
But this seems to be too easy for many environmentalists to understand.
That's why ( when I finally get myself a good job ) I will never have much to do with any of them.

Well, I understand your points. I get tired of organizations asking for money as well... so I just do my own thing. In this case I stand by them in calling this latest action by ABC outrageous. So instead of giving money I give time in my letter writing and activism. If I can afford a small donation, I give it. As far as your concerns about light pollution, I agree. This country if you look at maps of night lighting has the most and much of it is unnecessary. We haven't even touched the surface of all of the waste in this world and the many ways we contribute to this problem.

Thanks Jan.
That's exactly what I do to...do my own thing.
In the end, whatever anyone says, you have to be true to yourself:)

More about the ad. Amazing... even Fox News aired it. ABC's excuse that the Capitol building being in it for a split second violated their rules is simply BS. And though other networks did play it, it is the principle of it all and the fact that they did it with the same pictures and footage. Which only leads me to believe this decision came down from Disney for some other reason.

AGAIN, someone on the staff of this site has removed my tags and pushed this entry off the board where it cannot be seen. Those of us who put much effort and time into our submissions and actually MEAN what we say here and are sincere about getting information out should not have to deal with staff members with grudges. Really childish. I'm putting the tags back and would appreciate they be left alone.

Yes Jan, I've noticed this too.
Just like Huffington Post, they have their own bias too:(
BTW, I no longer consider myself a liberal because many have gone way, way overboard on things that really aren't true and aren't right.
I consider myself a moderate now.
It's really too bad that there is not more of a balance here, young folks don't always have all the answers and talk to themselves too much.
The rest of us have been there too and are older and a bit wiser.
We need to take care of our planet, and we need to take care of our economy.
But if we have a failing economy, and folks are fearful and don't have jobs, then talking about the planet isn't tooo relevant.
And other things that some here like to talk about..like those who are gay having the right to marry..well, it ain't going to help you much if you are about to lose your job.
And to those who are of the same vein on abortion, I say the same thing...
I don't give a hoot and holler about a woman's right to choose...
It's not going to help if your job is about to be in the trash.
Yes, I think that human life, ALL human life is sacred..
BUT....
Given the choice of a John McCain or Obama, given the choice of finding a job and not having it outsourced is more important than re electing failed leadership that only says it's pro life.
There are, after all, a few things that human beings don't want to change...
That's where The Holy Spirit comes in...
HE will change mens & womens hearts.
Prayer is more potent than politics.
