12-year-old McDonald's hamburger, still looking good

The McDonald's hamburger on the right is from 2008; the one on the left is from 1996. And they both look fairly edible.

Wellness educator and nutrition consultant Karen Hanrahan has kept a McDonald's hamburger since 1996 to illustrate its nonexistent ability to decay. Aside from drying out and bit and having "the oddest smell," it apparently hasn't changed much in the past 12 years.

This isn't the first time someone kept an uneaten McDonald's hamburger for an extended period of time for the sake of science. Or in the case of the Bionic Burger Museum, multiple burgers for over 19 years. There are even instructions on how to start your own collection of old, self-preserving burgers.

Anyone else have experience with fast food that just won't rot?

This is not interesting, it's disturbing. Food that won't rot is not really food. Especially a burger since the "meat" is basically part of a dead animal (not that I'm a vegetarian but I expect decomposition from all things that have died)

(trying to stay away from fast food)

I actually got the new burger and the old burger confused. When I realized, I just sat here and wretched. Horf!

P.S. That hamburger blog is my new favorite blog!! :O

That my friends is why I went Vegan...

I can't even imagine eating stuff like that anymore. Heck, I wouldn't eat McDonalds even before I went Vegan because nearly every time I did I got food poisoning.

    Creepy stuff...

    And the conservatives say...

"No regulation! The evil liberals want to decide what goes in your food with the evil FDA!"

I didn't need another reason not to eat at McDonalds, but fuck man. That shouldn't be legal. Shit that doesn't break down in your body should not be sold as food.

Hmm meaty goodness! I had a McDonalds the other day for the first time in a year (Big Mac meal with a banana milkshake ... who can blame me), but I think it'll be at least another year until the next one after seeing this!

I think a new marketing angle has just been uncovered ... vintage burgers.

But not a surprise surely - given dry storage and with the amount of salt contained in each burger, it should last for decades.

    How old is your jerky?

Who cares about the burgers themselves! This pod contains the secret to how John McCain has attained everlasting life!

    I agree with karrer.

This burger should be studied because McDonald's may need to venture into the pharmaceutical industry. Moreover, if their meet lasts this long, we may have the cure to hunger in 3rd world countries. Sure the meat may be rotting, but surely some food is better than none. [sarcasm]

I've been vegetarian for nearly a year now. I still crave McDonalds.

The most unhealthiest foods are always the best tasting. And immortal by the look of things....

Didnt everyone know that McDonalds doesnt sell real food?

A friend of mine's aunt had a similarly creepy experience with some processed cheese someone gave to her...

She didn't want to eat it, so she put it in her refrigerator in a bag with some other cheese that was molding... and just from setting next to it long enough, the other cheese's mold went away.

Needless to say, it made me rethink my cheese habit.

watch super size me, on the extras they take a variety of mcdonalds food and show how it takes weeks for some of it to rot. the fries never rotted.

This isnt the only fast food item with this strange preserving quality. As demonstrated in Super Size Me, the french fries as well stay virtually the same over an extended period of time. Eating Mcdonalds is practicaly the same as eating plastic, it does the same thing in your stomach.

That's pretty disgusting, I'd expect it to at least rot, guess McDonald's isn't really food (never ate there in years).

Makes me wonder how McDonald's hamburgers could even be digested by the human body. Pressure treated wood decking doesn't even last that long!!!
If I ever build a deck, I'm making it out of McDonald's hamburgers!
