At least 900 Christian families have fled Mosul in the past week, terrified by a series of killings and threats by Muslim extremists ordering them to convert to Islam or face possible death, officials said Saturday.

The attacks may have been prompted by Christian demonstrations ahead of provincial elections, which are to be held by the end of January, the deputy governor of Nineveh province said.

Deputy Gov. Khasro Goran said 13 Christians have been slain in the past two weeks inMosul, about 260 miles (420 kilometers) north of Baghdad. Fleeing Christians have sought refuge in monasteries and churches and with family members in other towns, an Interior Ministry official said.

The attacks began after hundreds of Christians took to the streets in Mosul and surrounding villages and towns, seeking greater representation on provincial councils, whose members will be chosen in the local elections.

Duraid Mohammed Kashmoula, Nineveh's governor, told The Associated Press that the exodus was "a major displacement."

"Of course, al Qaeda elements are behind this campaign against Christians," Kashmoula told AP.

The Interior Ministry official said the homes of three families were destroyed with explosives Saturday after the occupants left. No injuries were reported.

A week ago, leaflets were distributed in several predominantly Christian neighborhoods, threatening families to "either convert to Islam or pay the jizyah or leave the city or face death," said the Interior Ministry official.

Historically, jizyah is a tax paid by non-Muslims in exchange for protection.

Goran said that a few days after the leaflets were passed out, gunmen set up checkpoints in parts of Mosul, stopping vehicles to inspect identification papers, searching for Christian names or other signs of religious affiliation. Many of the Christians killed were targeted in this way, he said.

Bashir Azoz, 45, told AP he fled his Mosul home after gunmen warned a neighbor to leave or be killed.

"Where is the government and its security forces as these crimes take place every day?" asked Azoz, a carpenter who is staying with his wife and three children in a town about 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of Mosul, according to AP.

The Rev. Bolis Jacob, of Mosul's Mar Afram Church, told AP he couldn't understand the attacks.

"We respect the Islamic religion and the Muslim clerics," he said. "We don't know under what religion's pretexts these terrorists work."

Goran said police have set up security checkpoints in Christian neighborhoods.

In response to the violence, Iraqi Defense Minister Abdul Qader al-Obaidi visited Mosul on Saturday morning, conducting meetings with local authorities and military commanders.

His spokesman, Mohammed al-Askari, said that in addition to ordering more checkpoints in Christian neighborhoods, al-Obaidi ordered more troops deployed, additional security patrols and an increase in aerial surveillance of Christian areas.

Al-Obaidi also ordered more guards for Christian clerics, al-Askari said.

What it comes down to is that these extremists are just a bunch of murderers who use religion as an excuse to kill. Round them up and put them in jail where they belong. Let people live in peace believing what they want to believe if it's not harming anyone.

This is like saying that people who believe Elvis is still alive are running away from people who believe in unicorn riding leprechauns.

I always feel sorrow for the persecuted but people have to learn that god worshiping religions are not the answer to any of our problems.

The surge reduced violence and unrest in Iraq - it worked. That's not to say the country isn't still one of the most dangerous in the world.

This has been happening in places like Sudan for a long time now... nothing new... Islam does seek to convert the world, against their will if they have to.

Remember the crusades, ah, the good old days when our culture was doing the pillage & murdering. Specially after the Muslim culture brought back Europe from the dark ages with maths, art & literature via Spain ;)

When you think of European culture, one of the first things that may come to your mind is the renaissance. Many of the roots of European culture can be traced back to that glorious time of art, science, commerce and architecture. But did you know that long before the renaissance there was a place of humanistic beauty in Muslim Spain? Not only was it artistic, scientific and commercial, but it also exhibited incredible tolerance, imagination and poetry. Moors, as the Spaniards call the Muslims, populated Spain for nearly 700 years. As you'll see, it was their civilization that enlightened Europe and brought it out of the dark ages to usher in the renaissance. Many of their cultural and intellectual influences still live with us today.

    Whoever we are
    Wherever were from
    We shoulda noticed by now
    Our behavior is dumb
    And if our chances
    Expect to improve
Its gonna take a lot more
    Than tryin to remove
    The other race
    Or the other whatever
    From the face
    Of the planet altogether

    Nurds on the left
    Nurds on the right
    Religous fanatics
    On the air every night
    Sayin the bible
    Tells the story
    Makes the details
    Sound real gory
    bout what to do
    If the geeks over there
    Dont believe in the book
    We got over here

    You cant run a race
    Without no feet
    n pretty soon
    There wont be no street
    For dummies to jog on
    Or doggies to dog on
    Religous fanatics
Can make it be all gone
(I mean it wont blow up
    n disappear
    Itll just look ugly
    For a thousand years...)

    You cant run a country
    By a book of religion
    Not by a heap
Or a lump or a smidgeon
    Of foolish rules
    Of ancient date
    Designed to make
    You all feel great
    While you fold, spindle
    And mutilate
    Those unbelievers
    From a neighboring state

    To arms! to arms!
    Hooray! thats great
    Two legs aint bad
    Unless theres a crate
    They ship the parts
    To mama in
For souvenirs: two ears (get down!)
Not his, not hers, (but what the hey? )
    The good book says:
    (it gotta be that way!)
    But their book says:
    Revenge the crusades...
    With whips n chains
    n hand grenades...
    Two arms? two arms?
    Have another and another
    Our God says:
    There aint no other!
    Our God says
    Its all okay!
    Our God says
    This is the way!

    It says in the book:
    Burn n destroy...
    n repent, n redeem
    n revenge, n deploy
    n rumble thee forth
To the land of the unbelieving scum on the other side
cause they dont go for whats in the book
    n that makes em bad
So verily we must choppeth them up
    And stompeth them down
Or rent a nice french bomb
To poof them out of existance
While leaving their real estate just where we need it
    To use again
For temples in which to praise our god
(cause he can really take care of business!)

And when his humble tv servant
    With humble white hair
    And humble glasses
    And a nice brown suit
And maybe a blond wife who takes phone calls
    Tells us our God says
Its okay to do this stuff
    Then we gotta do it,
cause if we dont do it,
We aint gwine up to hebbin!
(depending on which book youre using at the
Time...cant use theirs... it dont work
    ...its all lies...gotta use mine...)
    Aint that right?
    Thats what they say
    Every night...
    Every day...
Hey, we cant really be dumb
If were just following gods orders
    Hey, lets get serious...
    God knows what hes doin
    He wrote this book here
    An the book says:
He made us all to be just like him,
    So...
    If were dumb...
    Then God is dumb...
(an maybe even a little ugly on the side)

For ya all well versed in French here is the best definition I have found to describe our darling big 3 monotheist religions that are bringing us all sooooo much love & understanding ;)

» - Michel Onfray

It's extremists, what do you expect?

Clearly neither Islam nor a good portion of the country agree with this.

And by the way, you might wanna be careful about pointing fingers petarro, lest you forget about the lynch mobs that killed anyone that looked Muslim after 9/11.

How long would a muslim survive in a bigoted community here in the U.S.?

Look, to be fair, Islam is a violent religion. But these people clearly aren't following the Qur'an, which states clearly that "people of the book" (Jews and Christians) are not to be harmed.

What petarro and others are doing here is attempting to turn extremists into the standard and attempting to turn cultural violence into religious persecution.

The middle east, generally speaking, is an ass-backwards place. Shit like this goes on all the time in a multitude of different ways.

Blame Islam if you want but that pretty much just makes you look like the political pandering fool that you are because reality is much more complicated than that.

Even the crusades have very obvious cultural factors, to blame it solely on Christianity is entirely irresponsible academically.

Of course you can't convince Christians of this. They want to believe that they are being persecuted at all time and they ignore any evidence to the contrary. Much like how Islam is set up to be a state religion, Christianity is set up to be an anti-state religion. That is, until it actually becomes the state. Then, for some reason, it has no problem violating its own creeds.

Dig deeper guys, strive to understand things deeper than your own political biases. You might just find the right answer along the way.

    thanks to nkeg87...

"The three monotheisms, animated by the same genealogical death instinct, share a series of identical contempt: hatred of reason and intelligence; hatred of freedom; hatred of all books in the name the one & only; hatred of life; hatred of sexuality, of women and pleasure; hatred of feminity; hatred of the body, of desires & impulses. Instead of all that, Judaism, Christianity and Islam defend: faith and belief, obedience and submission, a taste for death and a passion for the beyond, asexual angel and chastity, virginity and monogamic fidelity, the wife and the mother, the soul and spirit. In other words, life crucified and celebrated nothingness…"

So yeah watch Zeitgeist & join humanity in the 21th century won't ya all ;)

''The essence of Christianity is told us in the Garden of Eden history. The fruit that was forbidden was on the tree of knowledge. The subtext is; All the suffering you have is because you wanted to find out what was going on. You could be in the Garden of Eden if you had just keep your fucking mouth shut and hadn't asked any questions.'' - Frank Zappa

This is another consequence of the U.S. killing Saddam Hussein. He was one of the most tolerant people of Christianity in the Middle East region and sought to protect them from the Muslim majority. Of course he ran a very secular government to enhance his own power, but the situation is different for Christians now, isn't it?

    HaloedGriot

This is horrific, and completely contrary to Islam's intent. The vast majority of Muslims across the world must be sickened and horrified that this is going on, and that this is the aspect of Islam currently making the news.

This is a bunch of hypocritical bullshit. That is why it is being voted down.
If you want everyone to cry along with you about what is happening in Iraq, to SOME christians, show that you are not biast and post stories about Blackwater murdering innocent Iraqi cilivians for the sake of target practice. Print something about McCain and Palin preaching to hate for muslims and Black people right here in the good ol' U.S.of A.
I HAVE SEEN SOME OF YOUR POST TO WHERE YOU ACTUALLY MAKE MOCKERY OF MUSLIMS BEING PERSECUTED HERE IN THIS COUNTRY. This is the very mindset that has given American people the license to hate and attack muslim people here in this country.

You recently defended the Pope for being quite during the holocaust and not saying a word while Adolph Hitler slaughtered every Jew that he could find in Germany. Now are we suppose to believe that you,all of a sudden, care about what happens to all of humanity ?

    (for Petarro)
Petarro, I agree with your outrage more than you could imagine.

On current.com Christians are not Humans. Doesn't make sense does it? They are sub-human below animals or even worms probably.

Your story is important, but are appealing to the wrong crowd. If you had substituted anything in the place of Christian, i.e. owls, tigers, polar bears, liberal citizens, African Americans, you would have gotten the reaction that people should have for their fellow humans.

    (to everyone else)
They are Christians. Yes, but most importantly, they are human. And they are being killed for committing NO crime.

And for the rest of the repeated stuff I have read, the persecution that Christians did in past history, we all agree is horrible, however it accounts for less than one percent of the killings done TO Christians in the last 100 years alone.
So guys that blame Christians for everything wrong in the world... and the slaughter of every religious minority in an Islamic nation, please do some research before you get on a high horse and talk about witches and crusades.

And just because you don't believe in God, doesn't make them less human for believing. Remember THAT.

Then, have some humanity, people are being hunted like animals and being killed. That is what the story is about.
