It might be a 66-year-old cartoon but Walt Disney's Bambi has been named the best tear-jerker of all time ahead of other favourites such as ET and the Lion King.

The tale of the young deer whose mother is shot by hunters topped a poll of films which make you weep.

Fans have included Sir Paul McCartney, who credited the animated classic with turning him vegetarian.

Raunchy romance Ghost, starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore, came second.

Another animated Disney film, The Lion King, was third, sharing its place with Steven Spielberg's ET.

Titanic, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, Beaches, starring Bette Midler, Philadelphia, with Tom Hanks as a gay lawyer with Aids, and Watership Down also featured in the top ten.

Pearl and Dean carried out the online poll with over 3,000 film fans.

My favorite disney movie of ALL time. It's so good to know that I wasnt the only one who cried (and still does) when Bambi's mother died. And who can forget Mufasa?

    "Long life the king..."

    "Noooooo!!..."

    Omg :(

Bambi was made back when Disney animation was done by hand. Nowadays all Disney movies are done with computer animation. I miss way they made the movies back then... they seemed more genuine than today's overly commercialized Disney cartoons.

The part when Bambi lost his mother was especially tearjerking when I was a little kid.

urbangypsy, i completely agree with you. I think disney is relying too much on CGI...I've always said that they had to go back to hand drawn animation. glad to see i'm not the only one who thinks this as well

Bambi, ET and the Lion King?? People are such suckers for cheap tear-jerkers and feel-good movies. I've seen far more emotionally affecting and genuinely disturbing films, though I suppose they tend to be more art-house or independant so less people would have heard of them and voted..

Gets me EVERY time, but I watch it EVERY time!

Same with Steel Magnolias and Sound of Music!

Well that makes me feel better. My mother has never quite forgiven me for bringing the packed cinema down with howls of sorrow when I was 7. I'm sending her this article.

I could see a couple of those being on the list... but Bambi, Lion King, Ghost and Titanic give me a break. You couldn't pry a tear of boredom out of me from those movies...

What about movies like Hotel Rwanda or Darfur Now? People are so fucking superficial, they will cry over a cartoon deer... but the Rwandan Genocide left nearly one million people dead and the Genocide in Darfur has left nearly half a million people dead. That to me is worth shedding a tear over...

    Titanic? Really?

What about Gia or Powder maybe even My girl?

Disney crap should not be on the list, didn't he abuse his children?

    I think I cried watching #6 only.

    For me...

    Remember the Titans
    Pay it Forward
    Boyz in the Hood
    Freedom Writers

Lots more that aren't coming to mind, but certainly none of them Disney

The end of the series Cowboy Bebop is my ultimate tear jerker. Excellent series, even for most who don't really like anime. Good fun plot, but the end is such a sad and realistic thing.
