Apparently this is in response to what some see is a failure of the 24-hour drinking scheme to bring a change in behaviour and attitudes toward drinking. Do you think this kind of crack down is going to have any more effect than the 24-hour plan?

i can understand why giving women free drinks could be bad but things like drinking games are just fun and party of a night out
hmm i dont think it will change anything substansial

Freudian slip there, Phoenix234?? ('Part(y) of a night out). I don't think it will change anythign too substantial but I must admit I've always felt it sends out a seedy message that an establishment that offers free drinks to women is a good place to be. I mean, what is that saying?

With the price of things they way they are they encourage people to be drunk going out.
i simply can't afford to drink in the pub all night.Add all the other depessing shit of this world on top and poxy weather, what else is there to do but go out and get mangled?
I'm moving to austrailia....

Not to be a bit of a spoilsport here but I'm glad they're stopping the free drinks for ladies promos. I always thought it was far too sexist and, when embraced thoroughly, led to far too much crying and ABBA singalongs from armies of women on the night bus for me to handle.

I have been to maybe a handful of "ladies nights" in my entire (and long!) life... I have never seen the advantage of going to a bar to socialize in the first place though... frickin drunks hang out in those places!

The whole free drinks for women thing was pretty ridiculous anyway; like it or not, it usually did attract the wrong type of men to a particular venue and heightens inequality.
-
Free drinks!!? How many free drinks?
-
It's sexist, yeah, I agree with you and it also attracts the wrong type of person, not only men.
I doubt it will stop people from singing in the night bus back home though! -
I some how feel that people or men did not put much thought into this...it can not be too sexist, what most men would have done in order to get drunk, will be attend this nights with their girlfriends or just girls that they are friends with...girl gets a drink and passes it on to the man. Simple solution...place the drink on the table and the man picks it up..

Well, at least in the US, the idea of free drinks for ladies is less about getting women drunk and more about getting women into the bars in the first place. There are always a disproportionately high number of men in the nightclubs, and in order to make sure they stay the free drink offer to women in incentive for them to come in and stay for awhile; that in turn causes the men to stay longer, with everyone drinking and the bar making bank. Taking away the free drinks here would mean there's no reason for the women to frequent those bars, and the men would get bored being just around other men, so they'd leave as well. Its a vicious cycle.
In a free market economy, I say let the bars make the rules. Why have more government regulations over our fun? They already tell us what we can and can't ingest recreationally, where we can go and for how long, and how much fun we can have in public....
