Starbucks claimed the constantly running tap was necessary to meet hygiene rules and prevent bacteria growth in the sinks used to rinse utensils but environmental health experts dismissed this and said there are more effective ways of cleaning.
Now The Sun newspaper reports:
“Starbucks ordered staff to keep the taps running yesterday while experts advise them on an alternative system. But we found workers had defied the instruction and turned off the taps. In Newcastle an assistant said: “It just seems common sense.”

Good for them! It's sad, though, to think they could get in trouble, or worse, lose their jobs, for such a "defiance."

yes... it just does seem like common sense. good for them. last time this topic was brought up it seemed like many people just didn't get it.

Good for them! So good to hear that the people on the ground are taking notice of these environmental issues (and so quickly too) and actively changing the way they do things.

Hahaha! We've been told to turn the tiny tap off and to rinse the shot glasses a lot less often. The spoons are already getting pretty gross, its only beena few days and not that busy.
I cant believe people think that the smallest trickle of water cleaning appliances is a waste :S
Do people not understand starbucks is paying for that water, and its going down the drain anyway so its not leaving the water cycle...some people are pathetic. The fact that people read the Sun in the first place haha

If ya aren't USING the water as it comes out of the tap you are WASTING the water. Who cares if Starbucks is paying for it, they are being irresponsible.

I worked at an ice cream shop that used constant running water to keep the scoops thawed for faster service. I turned it off every chance I got. Rinsing utensils after each use is far better for the environment, if not more hygienic... since the employee is constantly washing the item instead of placing it in a sink with mostly standing water. Yuck.

I'd rather waste water than get yucky filth in my latte.
Please, don't poison me!

Good for them, lets go back to "old west days" just wipe it out with the nearest rag and hang it out to dry at night

starbucks needs to develop a water recycling system. i'm sure the water can be filtered and used to wash more and more spoons.
