In an interview with the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, Nguyen Tien Tran acknowledged that conditions in the prison were "tough, though not inhuman". But, he added: "We never tortured McCain. On the contrary, we saved his life, curing him with extremely valuable medicines that at times were not available to our own wounded."
McCain, who fell into enemy hands after his plane was shot down in 1967, has frequently referred to being tortured and has cited his experiences as a reason for vigorously opposing the endorsement by the Bush administration of the use of techniques such as "water-boarding" on terrorist suspects.
Shortly after his release in 1973 McCain told US News & World Report that his prison guards had beaten him "from pillar to post". After being worked over at intervals for four days, he said, he had become suicidal and agreed to sign a "confession" admitting to war crimes.

Many of his fellow Veterans call him Songbird for a reason...
-
I always wondered about his allegations of torture. Thanks maasanova!

Interesting website, especially this page:

Give me a fucking break! So he cant raise his hands past his shoulders and over his head why? I Cannot believe how easily people are swayed. Think what you will about his policies, but come on! This story would be equivalent to me saying that Barack Obama doesn't and never has played basketball, worked out, or even ran for an official office in his life! I always wondered about Barack's time in the Illinois state legislature...
-
His arms were broken when his plane was hit. He didn't get top-notch medical treatment for his broken arms in the first two weeks, that is why he cannot raise his hands past his shoulders and over his head. This is a well-established fact.

Farrakhan says Obama is the messiah. The Democratic Organizationed Klu Klux Klan endorses McCain. These have more substance and bearing on the election than this story
-
I don't see why this wouldn't be true. What does the guard have to gain by lying about it?
-
Hmm, more lies and exaggerations from the Republican campaign comes out eh? Guess it's not just Palin spinning us all those porkies. Anything to get more attention eh?
-
no one is easily swayed hear, most of us already wouldn't vote McCain in the first place.
This just furthers are reasoning.
-
McCains a crackpot, Palin isnt any better. If they get elected, I'm sorry, but the U.S. of A is screwed
-
There's one way to solve the mystery....unseal the damn records! Oh wait, John McCain doesn't want that.

This is why all the republicans can't be trusted. They keep telling us that there's nothing to the rumours (bush's military service, bush's arrest record, cheney's energy meetings, white house emails, and now McCain's so-called torture as a POW) But they insist on burying and keeping sealed (or destroying) all records of any possible wrong-doing.
-
If this is true...my last shreds of respect for McCain would go up in flames. He torched it beyond repair by choosing Palin, an irresponsible and insulting choice of a running mate that says he's putting just about everything first before the country (!!), but he's still served this country, either in the armed forces or government for a long time, and many of those years (in government at least), he served well, reaching across party lines and being about as unobjectionable as a Republican can be. But if his torture claims are just that, claims, and not the truth...that would be a career long lie-milking that is just putrid.
-
"tough, though not inhuman". But, Bush added: "We never tortured the prisoners."
---in response to how are the conditions at Guantanamo Bay.
-
I don't care whether or not McCain was tortured. I am glad he has worked hard to fight against US perpetrated acts of torture. i believe that if he were elected he would have the most comprehensive policy against the use of torture that this nation has ever seen, based on his passion and work around this issue in his political career.
For a look into the horrific torture that the US has committed in the war on terror, check out the documentary "Taxi to the Dark Side."

Though I despise McCain, this story has to be taken with a grain of salt given its source. I admit however, that there are parts of it that have the "ring of truth" particularly the part about wanting to keep him healthy because he was the son of an important military official.
-
yeah, cause bone damage like that man has happens from promptly treating aircraft crash injuries and a 5star hotel stay... dumasses, and what would you expect a man that was in charge of prisoner camp that tortured a man whos possibly the next leader of a nation 50x bigger than you, DENIAL!

SERIOUSLY ARE F'N BRAIN DEAD. The head guard of the prison claims...
DOESN'T THIS SOUND A LITTLE like Guantanamo bay but all the liberals didn't believe those guards weren't abusing people.
This is the stupid kinda crap that mocks the first amendment
btw, follow the link, it's a UK tabloidish publication, Roseanne Barr shared the cover -
Tortured or not he's fucking up before he is even in office, his running mate is a bimbo, i have no problem with her gender, just her brains. He nor Palin can be trusted. The rape of the world has never been so in our face and yet we all just sit and blog...

I don't buy it. They gave him "advanced" medical treatment for over 5 years? What a sham. He was on crutches when he made it out of the POW camp. Good job with that !

Unseal the documents already or shut up.
The guard may be lying to protect his own reputation, or he may be telling the truth as it is in any countrys best interest to keep prisoners alive and well as a bargaining chip, which they most certainly were used as.
But I think it is hilarious that the Republicans are getting a taste of their own medicine! They tore up Kerry for being a patriot because he was running against the coward Bush who ran from the military!
I think this is hilarious! The Republicans themselves have proven that a military record is in no way a good judge of character, and set the standard that a military record was a tool to be dragged through the mud!
How do you like your partys own rules now McCain!
LOL! A maverick sellout now has to pay the price for selling out! I love it!

I figured it was just a matter of time before someone came out with an opposing point of view from McCain POW days. I was never quite sure why anyone was so impressed by the original story. He barely made it through school, crashed five planes and was captured by the enemy where he sang like a canary. If it weren't for his Admiral Dad and Grand Dad we wouldn't even be having this conversation.
-
what a bunch of bullshit. sorry, but if he wasn't tortured then why does he move like a stiff board. I'm voting against his ticket (PALIN) but this is a little over the top and pretty low brow if you ask me.
-
So the word of a prison guard no one knows of is credible? Sorry, I may not like his policies or what he has become, but this is just low. But not surprising since it is now obvious that the toxicity of politics spreads to both sides. That's one good reason why I'm not voting for either side this time...They both disgust me. I suppose to either side as well, supporting troops in any war only goes as far as it suits the political agenda at the time. In my estimation it was torture just being there. How soon people on either side forget when consumed when political hatred.
