    • Survey shows many Britons bully overweight people

A survey shows that 9 out of 10 overweight people experience name-calling due to their size.

Many of those people insulting others were in fact themselves overweight or obese.

Despite the increase of political correctness, the survey found many of the name-callers were young people.

    • Lebanese business plans to sue Israeli Hummus

JERUSALEM, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- A Lebanese business group plans to sue Israel in an international court, claiming its neighbor has stolen foods that are not its own, like hummus and felafel.

The Association of Lebanese Industrialists say that Israel, by marketing its own brands of the traditional dishes, is costing its members millions of dollars a year, The Independent reported.

The action does have a precedent. In 2005, the European Court ruled that only feta cheese made in Greece can use the name.

Given relations between Israel and Lebanon, the dispute has a political dimension. Rami Levy, eating at a Jewish hummus restaurant in Jerusalem, was philosophical.

"Everyone copies something from the other and then adds something of their own. It's the same in food as in music," he said. "But let them fight about food. It's a lot better than fighting about territory."

Restaurant owner Itzhak Rachmo, whose family moved to Israel from Syria, was angry.

"Because they can't create planes and guns and atomic weapons, they are trying to latch onto something so stupid," he said.

    • Brazo Cappuccino

Cappuccino is an Italian coffee-based drink prepared with espresso, hot milk, and milk foam.

A cappuccino differs from a caff?atte in that it is prepared with much less steamed or textured milk than the caff?atte with the total of espresso and milk/foam making up between approximately 150 ml and 180 ml (5 and 6 fluid ounces).

A cappuccino is traditionally served in a porcelain cup, which has far better heat retention characteristics than glass or paper. The foam on top of the cappuccino acts as an insulator and helps retain the heat of the liquid, allowing it to stay hotter longer.

Benlays provides it with the brand name BRAZO CAPPUCCINO. It is made with brazilian robusta beans.

Brazo Cappuccino has full100% brazilian robusta beans. Its ingrediants are instant coffee, milk fat, skimmed milk and sugar.

    • Ketchup ban at council's schools

Tomato ketchup is the latest foodstuff to be banned from canteens at some schools as part of a move towards healthier eating.

Bought-in bottles are off the menu at Vale of Glamorgan primary schools and one parent called the move "daft".

The council said the policy is not to use "mass-produced foods," but produce fresh food on the premises.

It follows news Marmite has been banned from Ceredigion's school breakfast clubs due to worries over salt content.

Sharon Chapman, 47, whose eight-year-old son Rory attends Peterston-Super-Ely Primary School in the Vale of Glamorgan, said: "He came home from school and said 'We can't have ketchup any more'.

"He can live without it and the healthy meals at the school are fantastic, but this seems one step too far as they only used to have it once a week on a burger anyway. Now he says the burger is really dry.

"Tomato ketchup contains lycopene, which is good for you, but they say it's got a high level of salt and sugar.

"While it's not something you complain about, it seems a bit daft."

Vale of Glamorgan Council leader Gordon Kemp said: "The policy is not to use mass-produced foods, we produce everything fresh on the premises.

    • 12-year-old McDonald's hamburger, still looking good

The McDonald's hamburger on the right is from 2008; the one on the left is from 1996. And they both look fairly edible.

Wellness educator and nutrition consultant Karen Hanrahan has kept a McDonald's hamburger since 1996 to illustrate its nonexistent ability to decay. Aside from drying out and bit and having "the oddest smell," it apparently hasn't changed much in the past 12 years.

This isn't the first time someone kept an uneaten McDonald's hamburger for an extended period of time for the sake of science. Or in the case of the Bionic Burger Museum, multiple burgers for over 19 years. There are even instructions on how to start your own collection of old, self-preserving burgers.

Anyone else have experience with fast food that just won't rot?

    • 'Bailout the hungry,' activists tell World Bank

In my opinion the World Bank has precipitated much of this crisis. They have been giving loans to countries in the third world at exhorbitant rates that they cannot pay back. This only perpetuates the cycle of poverty and hunger and keeps them enslaved to the system. There must be a way to provide assistance to small rural farmers in developing countries to be able to have the tools necessary to grow natural food for their people without the intererence of all of these foreign markets and speculators causing the prices to also be out of the range of affordability for the people who need them the most.

Any conference regarding food or any crisis surrounding it must also include discussion of the global water crisis. You cannot grow food without water, and in many areas of the developing world especially in Asia and Africa water is a resource that is becoming harder and harder to come by due to mismanagement, waste, pollution, climate change, privitization, and population increases. There is also too much power concentrated with organizations like the World Bank and the corporations they are in collusion with. When you have a central bank controlling everything, it appears more people have nothing.

This food crisis could be addressed much more effectively if there was more regulation regarding loaning these countries money in regards to the rates they are charged on top of the loan along with other stipulations that make their contracts hard to fulfill ( such as agreeing to loan money to lay water pipes on the stipulation that their water will be privitized.) How about forgiving all third world debt for a start? That in and of itself would free up funds that could then be used for sustainable development (solar and wind etc.) in these countries and allow people to gain access to small loans such as those provided by the Grameen Bank to start people in their own businesses. Making their own income not accountable to some World Bank that seeks to run their lives and tell them they must plant genetically modified foods to make their benefactors like Monsanto more profit would also ease much poverty in these areas and start people on the road not only to sustainability but life. Isn't that freedom?

I don't claim to be an expert on any of this nor to have the answers. I do know however, that the food and water crises we now find ourselves in the midst of is the most important thing in concert with the climate crisis that all ties in together that we now face in this century, and we need new answers as the old ways do not appear to be working any longer. It is simply unconscienable to me that with the billions upon billions of dollars we have in this world to spend on bailing out greedy bankers, wage illegal wars, and continue to support corrupted systems that actually perpetuate these crises, that we can't find some of those funds along with some compassion and political will to for once do the right thing. No child in any country should have to die because some pencil pusher in a government organization or a world leader a world away is holding back the food that child needs because of political or economic expedience.

Feed the people, and give them water. There is more than enough. What we need to do now is find that moral and political strength to do it and do it equitably. It shouldn't be hard if you have a heart and a conscience.

OK, getting down off my soap box now. ;-)

    • USDA biotech regulations on "pharma" crops could allow drugs in food

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) today denounced newly proposed U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) rules governing genetically engineered crops, including food crops engineered to produce pharmaceutical and industrial products. The proposed rules, UCS charged, would not protect the U.S. food supply from potential contamination by drugs from "pharma" crops, and could allow drugs that it deems "safe" to enter the food supply. This contamination could occur through cross-pollination or seed mixing between pharma food crops and crops intended for consumption.

The USDA ignored recommendations for a ban on the outdoor production of pharma food crops from the Grocery Manufacturers Association, major food companies, UCS, and more than 100 environmental, agricultural, health, and consumer organizations.

Below is a statement by Jane Rissler, UCS's Food and Environment Program deputy director:

"Under the proposed rules, USDA's new motto is 'Only safe levels of drugs in U.S. food.' If these proposals are enacted into law, American consumers must accept the possibility of drugs in their breakfast cereal or other common foods. Moreover, these rules likely will lead to contamination scares, which will hurt the food industry.

"The USDA proposal, unlike the ban we recommended, offers no incentives to drug companies to pursue already existing, safer methods for producing drugs.

"In its rush to enact the proposed rules into law before the end of the Bush administration, the USDA has given short shrift to public participation. The department is allowing only 45 days for the public to analyze and comment on this major proposal, which will determine the government's approach to regulating genetically engineered organisms for years to come.

"The proposed rules also overhaul the existing regulatory system for genetically engineered crops other than pharma crops. Some of the proposed changes represent steps in the right direction such as making the regulatory program more coherent and comprehensive, expanding the scope of genetically engineered organisms subject to government oversight, and allowing the department to consider impacts on public health."
