Prosthetic eye gives horse a shot at show career
LAWTON, Okla. - A miniature horse has been given a second chance for a career as a show horse — thanks to a prosthetic eye. The 65-pound horse, named KBuck, was born June 1 at Lil Chums Miniature Horse Farm in Lawton and lost its eye a few days after birth. Owner Kelsey Chumbley, 12, said she suspects the young horse was the victim of a swift kick from its mother.
"We thought he was going to end up being a backyard pet" instead of a show horse, Kelsey said. "When we found out he had a second chance I was really excited for him."
Veterinarian Jeff Hammond of Marlow tried in June to save the young horse's eye. When it became evident the surgery didn't work, Hammond suggested the cosmetic alternative.
KBuck's prosthetic eye was handcrafted by designers at La Fuente Ocular Prosthetics in Oklahoma City.
The eye was fashioned with a mold of KBuck's hollow eye socket and constructed with hard acrylic plastic, said Brandon La Fuente. It was hand-painted to look exactly like the horse's real eye, complete with deep blue features and tiny red veins.
KBuck's eye cost about $3,000, but his worth will far exceed the investment if his show career takes off. Kelsey Chumbley said there are no rules against showing a horse with a prosthetic eye, and it's unlikely judges will be able to tell it's fake.
Hammond said adjusting to a prosthetic eye shouldn't be a hardship for the horse because he was so young when he lost it.
"Having one eye hasn't affected him a bit — he's a spitfire," Hammond said. LAWTON, Okla. - A miniature horse has been given a second chance for a career as a show horse — thanks to a prosthetic eye. The 65-pou... more -

Phillies blast way to victory over Dodgers
LOS ANGELES - The Philadelphia Phillies used their favorite staple, the long ball, to move within one win of the World Series.
Shane Victorino and much-traveled pinch-hitter Matt Stairs hit two-run homers off two of Los Angeles’ most reliable relievers in the eighth inning Monday night, lifting the Phillies to a 7-5 victory over the Dodgers and a 3-1 lead in the NL championship series.
It was the first time the visiting team has won a game in 12 meetings between the teams this year.

John Madden's Broadcasting Streak to End at 476 Games
For the first time since he began calling games as a color analyst for CBS Sports full-time in 1980, Madden, now 72, and working games for NBC on Sunday nights, will not be in action for an NFL regular season game, a remarkable run the network said is now at 476 games.
Iron Man Madden has never missed a regular season week in an NFL football booth in 28 years. Not for illness, not for wedding anniversaries or big birthdays, not even for flat tires or mechanical breakdowns on his "Madden Cruiser" in the middle of Nebraska on its cross country trek to the Meadowlands in New Jersey.
It wasn't exactly Madden's idea to take a deep breath and a day off this weekend, but when NBC Sports Chairman Dick Ebersol first broached the possibility with him last spring, Madden said he'd have to think about it. Ten days ago, he spoke with Ebersol again and told him it might not be a bad idea.
"I wasn't reluctant as much as I was 'let's wait and see how it goes,'" Madden said in a telephone interview Monday. "Last year we had a couple of tough (trips). I still enjoy the travel, but you'd like to be home once in a while. I've got five grandchildren. It's a quality of life issue.
The 49ers and the Raiders not being good also has hurt, because you never get a home game. Even when L.A. had a team, I'd get to be home. When you see the grand kids, it's like they've grown two feet. So I'd like to check in once awhile, and this is a good chance to do that." And a unbelievably shocking to see something like this happen...
Cherepanov was the top ranked skater in all of Europe heading into the 2007 draft... and pretty much had all the signs of a can't miss prospect...
"He was close to a complete package," said Goran Stubb, NHL Director of European Scouting. "Very fast skater. He was a goal scorer and a passer.
"I think he could have been a big spectator favorite because he was that kind of player. Sometimes you could hardly notice him, but on one shift, he could do unbeliveable things with the puck -- passing, shooting, skating, extremely skillful. A finesse player with a capital 'F.'" It is meant to help one overcome obstacles, which can be anything in the surrounding environment—from branches and rocks to rails and concrete walls—and can be practiced in both rural and urban areas. Run down of the events...
The day started kind of as we'd expected it, wet and really slippery. We got to Pier 17, where the performance was around 7:30 am and started rehearsing, making our lines and much to our disappointment slipping around a lot. It wasn't just that the obstacles we were set out to use where slippery but the fact that since the whole set was on the pier and wet wood equals natures slip n' slide, pretty much every one of us had slipped just walking around or running into or out of a movement, it was kind of ridiculous. We caught a lucky break when we found out they had a bunch of extra thin mats which we could actually get some good footing on whether wet or not. So with that we were able to all get a decent route set up and by the time 9 am hit around we had to stop rehearsing so that we could save it for the show.

Raiders turn in lackluster performance in New Orleans
Somewhere, Lane Kiffin is smiling. The Oakland Raiders were listless in their obliteration by the New Orleans Saints 34-3. The Raiders defense offered no resistance as Drew Brees put on a passing clinic and moved the Saints down the field at will. Meanwhile, the Raiders offense could do little despite getting good filed position for much of the first half. Somewhere, Lane Kiffin is smiling. Tiny Wofford College Slays The University of Tennessee/Chattanooga, 56-7!!
Yesirree, little David slays another Goliath!! Defending Southern Conference champion Wofford College was back in action yesterday, taking on The University of Tennessee/Chattanooga after having a week off. Wofford is the smallest school playing NCAA Division-I football, with only 1250 students (about half are men). Wofford's only loss this season was a last-minute upset loss to the University of South Carolina, playing before 86,000 fans in South Carolina's Bryce Stadium.
Saturday was a day for big plays as No. 9 Wofford College (4-1/2-0) scored five of their seven touchdowns from 20 yards or more to claim a 56-7 win over Chattanooga (1-6/0-3). Quarterback Ben Widmyer, who took over the controls of the wingbone attack from the graduated Josh Collier, got the Terriers rolling early with a 75-yard option run for a touchdown on Wofford's second offensive play. After Tennessee/Chattanooga scored to even the game at seven apiece, Wofford went on to score 49 unanswered points. This article includes a number of photographs and three videos.
You've just to take a little bit of time to read about this Wofford football team and watch the video highlights from some of their games. You'll just sit there and say to yourself—WTF!! Yep, indeed you will! Yesirree, little David slays another Goliath!! Defending Southern Conference champion Wofford College was back in action yesterday, t... more -
