Best Rapper Alive Competition Feels Slim Shady
If you feel like there's a pun in the headline of this blog post, good.
Last week Vibe magazine announced that Eminem had won its Best Rapper Alive competition, a NCAA-style tournament that pitted the "top" 64 MCs against each other.
The online contest polled users over a 5-week period. During the first week, the 64 competing rappers were paired off and users were asked to select the best 32 artists. The second week, that group of 32 lyricists was also grouped in twos and the voters picked their favorite 16. Over the subsequent weeks, the list dwindled down to the last b-boys standing, Jay-Z and Eminem. Eminem won by a landslide of 69 percent, compared to Jay-Z's 31 percent.

Clintons Support Obama As McCain Vows To Win Upcoming Debate
The political world has been heating up as election day draws closer. With a war of words, debates, campaign trail controversy and more, both parties are going down to the finish line with their messages.
This weekend, Senator Barack Obama's campaign got a boost from Hillary and Bill Clinton. The Clintons joined Democratic VP nominee Joe Biden in Scranton, Pennsylvania to continue their efforts to elect Obama.
Hillary Clinton spoke to the crowd about why she is speaking out against Republicans.
"Sending the Republicans to solve this economic crisis is like sending the bull to clean up the china closet. They broke it and we're not buying it anymore," she noted. "Barack Obama and Joe Biden will be leaders who will lead us out of this economic crisis."
This weekend also saw John McCain speaking about his standing in the race and he offered up a challenge to Sen. Obama, by claiming he'd "whip" Obama in the final presidential debate.
"After I whip his you-know-what in this debate, we're going to be going out 24/7," he told supporters while campaigning in Arlington, Virginia. "I want to emphasize again, I respect Senator Obama. We will conduct a respectful race, and we will make sure that everybody else does, too."
He also went on to speak about how he views his current standing in the polls.
"I'd like to give you a little straight talk, we're a couple points down, ok, nationally, but we're right in this game. The economy has hurt us a little bit in the last week or two, but in the last few days we've seen it come back up because they want experience, and they want knowledge and they want vision. And we'll give that to America, and I know that we're going to win this race."
The final presidential debate is set to take place Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008 at Hofstra University. CBS' Bob Shieffer is scheduled to moderate the debate.

Raphael Saadiq: Soul For Real Interview
It’s pretty safe to assume Raphael Saadiq knows a thing or two about reinvention. After all, it was the Saadiq-led trio of Tony! Toni! Toné! whose “If I Had No Loot” sampled Ice Cube saying, “And you can New Jack Swing on my nuts,” when other R&B acts were still doing their best Guy impression. The last 21 years have seen the man formerly known as Charlie Ray Wiggins undergo enough transformations to draw comparisons to a certain purple-clad soul singer from Minneapolis.
Saadiq’s chameleon mentality has taken him from talent shows in his native Oakland, to early accolades with his fellow Tonies and through a brief stint with Lucy Pearl, only to re-emerge again as a soloist. The only constant has been what appears to be a need to keep himself fresh through his interpretation of classic sounds.
On a day when true Soul aficionados mourned the untimely passing of Motown innovator Norman Whitfield, Saadiq spoke about bridging the gap between old and new on his latest effort, The Way I See It [click to read]. The album continues his efforts to push his genre forward, by taking a quantum leap back via the dusty catalogues of Motown, Stax and Philadelphia International Records. After all the changes, maybe it’s only fitting that things come full circle.
HipHopDX: On the Ray Ray album, you shot this blaxploitation styled cover art before you recorded any music. The Way I See It has a picture of your performance at Sweet's Ballroom. How important is it to you to have that visual as you're going into an album?
Raphael Saadiq: You know it just kind of happened like that a couple times. I tried to do the cover afterwards, but it didn’t work like that. I took that picture, and I tried to take more pictures of what I wanted to do. This one just fit. But it’s very important to me to get that whole feel before I get started.

BET Critics Praise Rap City Cancellation
While the cancellation of Rap City brought about some sadness and nostalgia from the Hip Hop community, there were others who rejoiced in the end of the 19-year-old program dedicated to all things Hip Hop.
The Parents Televison Council, Enough is Enough, National Congress of Black Women, and Industry Ears released a joint statement praising BET for ending Rap City’s run.
"We are heartened by the recent changes at BET, and we are gratified that our collective efforts were a catalyst for this positive change. It is apparent that our voices were heard by the public, by the corporate sponsors who underwrite television programming and by BET network executives,” the statement reads.
“Parents across this country want a cessation of marketing harmful, graphic and offensive images to children. But let us be clear about our goal: we are not trying to get a particular show cancelled or a particular executive fired. Rather, our goal is a reduction in the harmful and offensive messages on BET and MTV programming - especially when the programs are targeted at children. We have called for the networks to take responsibility for their products, and this program's cancellation is evidence of a step in the right direction."

Travis Barker Blogs A Thank You To Family And Fans
Travis Barker and DJ AM have received a lot of shout outs after they survived a tragic plane crash [click to read]. Still, Barker and AM have decided not to publicly say much about the crash until now. Saturday saw Barker post a personal blog on his MySpace page, where he spoke on the event, the aftermath and even shared some pictures.
Here is his blog in its entirety.
"I want to give my deepest thanks to everyone who has helped deal with the current situation. First and foremost, Chris and Che were my friends. I would give up anything to have them here with us today, healthy and happy. To call them my employees does them such a disservice, as they were so much more than that. Chris was my best friend before anything else, and I can never put into words how much he will be missed. Che was an amazing person as well, and I was honored to have him in my life.
I am simply amazed and will be forever grateful for all the support everyone has shown to Chris and Che's families. Its a testament to how many lives they touched in a positive way.

Pitbull Calls Daddy Yankee/McCain A Failed "Publicity Stunt"
Pitbull [click to read] has kept relatively quiet since his former label TVT went bankrupt in February [click to read]. But when the always-outspoken Miami native talked to HipHopDX recently, he made it clear he plans on making up for lost time in 2009. Sony, Universal Republic and The Orchard, who Pit currently has a single deal with, are all interested in getting their hands on his upcoming album, Rebelution.
"If I tap into anybody else, it has to be a situation where I have part ownership or full ownership of what I do," says Pitbull. "I want to be able to control my destiny as far as the music game is concerned. The Orchard ended up with the masters in my catalogue. But they cut me a nice deal, and they’re being very generous."
Pitbull's last effort, The Boatlift, did modest numbers due to the TVT bankruptcy. At one point Pit says the company could not afford to manufacture any physical CDs to sale retailers. After signing a single deal with The Orchard for his new single, "Krazy," Mr. 305 has plans to expand his name brand. Pitbull recently launched the social-networking site PlanetPit.com and started shooting a second season of his reality/sketch comedy show La Esquina.
When asked what other ventures he was working on, Pit played it somewhat close to the vest.

McCain campaign drops advisor over racist piece
John McCain's campaign has removed the Virginia leadership representative Bobby May due to a controversial column about the policies of Barack Obama.
In the article, titled "The (clarified) platform of Barack Hussein Obama," took shots at Obama's ethnic background and implied him to be an Islamic extremist.
The article took a step-by-step approach to each of the policies, giving a cynical and often racially charged view of them. For example, on the matter of reparations to black communities : "Opposes before Election Day, and supports after Election Day."
On the matter of freedom of religion: "Mandatory Black Liberation Theology courses taught in all churches - raise taxes to pay for this mandate. Put Rev. Jeremiah Wright in charge."
May even took the time to throw Ludacris and 50 Cent under the bus, saying that Obama would "Hire rapper Ludacris to 'paint it black,'" and that he would attempt to appoint 50 the Secretary of the Treasury.

Paris Ghetto Film Fest
Each year, French film director Luc Besson organizes an open air film festival in several Parisian suburbs, places which are generally considered no-go areas, where cars are set on fire and ambulances get attacked... Last year Luc Besson convinced directors at the Cannes Festival to send him a copy of their brand new movies to screen them in the suburbs. Tarantino, Brad Pitt and others agreed. The people from the suburbs were incredibly happy to have those movies screened for free on the same day as the premiere in Cannes.
Journalists covering this festival were not allowed to collect pictures of burning cars, but had to ask people about the newest cinema releases... the event was a surprisingly strong political stament comming from a commercial movie producer as well as a huge success with over 60.000 spectators.
This year, the festival is held again in a slightly modified version and it's supposed to be even bigger...VC2 producer Philip Mayrhoffer will talk to Luc Besson and spectators to cover the event. Underground hip hop and the sellout ...
If you're a fan of real underground hip hop and rap then you've noticed how everyone is for sale. This is called being professional, aka "give me money"... There use to be a time when you got on a mixtape based on skills: now automated messages go out concerning prices and no one listens anymore.
If Nas couldn't afford or just didn't want to pay to be heard then we would be without a living legend. A&R used to go looking for talent - now it's just a networked wall of fake DJs who take money for spin.
This is just my opinion, if you agree with me or just feel my music, I'm down for collabs (based on skills, I'm not looking for money), (real) DJs, people who just want someone wit lyrical value to rhyme on their beat ... hit me up.
