The Bike Ride: A Long, Sad Journey to Heartbreak
Just how far would you ride your bike to visit your old girlfriend, who might or might not want to see you? "The Bike Ride" tells the seemingly simple tale of one guy's long 50-mile bike journey to pay a surprise visit to his girlfriend. And indeed, she's very much taken by surprise! It's a dreamlike, dizzying head trip, which very sadly ends in heartbreak.
This piece includes great images, as well as the humorously bittersweet animation, "The Bike Ride." Just how far would you ride your bike to visit your old girlfriend, who might or might not want to see you? "The Bike Ride"... more -
Hippie apes make war as well as love, study finds
Despite their reputation as lovers not fighters of the primate world, bonobos actually hunt and eat other great apes, German researchers said Monday.
Their findings, the first direct evidence of hunting by the so-called "hippie" apes, show that such behavior is not linked to male dominance as females rule bonobo society and also go on hunts.
"We always have this view that hunting is a male business," said Gottfried Hohmann of the Max-Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. "What our study shows is this is not necessarily the case.
"This has implications for models on early humans that people have proposed how humans have evolved," said Hohmann, whose findings are published in Current Biology.
Bonobos, chimpanzees and orangutans, collectively known as the great apes, are the closest genetic relatives to humans and scientists study their behavior to learn more about our own evolution.
The apes are generally considered more peaceful than their close cousins, the chimps, and have a reputation for free-loving ways because sex plays a major role their society, being used for greetings, conflict resolution and reconciliation.
Scientists had thought bonobos, found in the lowland forest south of the river Congo, only ate small animals such as squirrels, forest antelopes and rodents they encountered.
But over five years of observing a group of bonobos the researchers recorded about 10 instances when a group of the apes set out on hunting trips in search of chimpanzees.
Each time the bonobos silently crept through the woods on the ground, trying to get underneath a group of chimps before clambering up a tree in a sudden attack, the researchers said.
The bonobo hunts were successful on fewer than half the excursions and in some cases shared the meat, evidence they were willing to share to encourage group hunting, Hohmann and colleagues said.-----------------this is our follow up to the monkeys serving drinks(: Despite their reputation as lovers not fighters of the primate world, bonobos actually hunt and eat other great apes, German researche... more -

I am sad when I watch this photo.
All is unavoidable.
A drop has fallen. It will not rise back.

Alternative ways to understanding Statistics (funny)
After applying some simple algebra to some trite phrases and clinches a new understanding can be reached of the secret to wealth and success.
* Here it goes. Knowledge is Power
* Time is Money and as every engineer knows,
* Power is Work over Time.
* So, substituting algebraic equations for these time worn bits of wisdom, we get: K = P (1)
* T = M (2)
* P = W/T (3)
* Now, do a few simple substitutions: Put W/T in for P in equation (1), which yields:
* K = W/T (4)
* Put M in for T into equation (4), which yields: K = W/M (5).
* Now we've got something. Expanding back into English, we get: Knowledge equals Work over Money.
* What this MEANS is that: 1. The More You Know, the More Work You Do, and
* 2. The More You Know, the Less Money You Make.
* Solving for Money, we get: M = W/K (6)
* Money equals Work Over Knowledge.
From equation (6) we see that Money approaches infinity as Knowledge approaches 0, regardless of the Work done.
* What THIS MEANS is: The More you Make, the Less you Know.
* Solving for Work, we get W = M K (7)
* Work equals Money times Knowledge
From equation (7) we see that Work approaches 0 as Knowledge approaches 0.
* What THIS MEANS is: The stupid rich do little or no work.
Working out the socioeconomic implications of this breakthrough is left as an exercise for the reader. After applying some simple algebra to some trite phrases and clinches a new understanding can be reached of the secret to wealth and s... more -

Friends don't give friends seven orgasms. (MORE below)
One picture is 1k words... but can once sentence can be a story?
One Sentence is about telling your story, briefly. Insignificant stories, everyday stories, or turning-point-in-your-life stories, boiled down to their bare essentials.
The idea was born from a blog entry several years ago that got 14 million responses.
Here are a few more...
As my friend was trying to explain to the 911 operator that we needed an ambulance at a biking trail named "Who's your daddy," I realized that I would be laying on the ground for a long time before being rescued.
As I stood shivering and topless outside 7-11 at 3 in the morning with a strange woman who was just let out of jail, I wondered whether it was a sign to stop drinking or a suggestion to drink more. (wonder if this was a chick that wrote this? a.s.)
When my three year old said that all "towel heads are evil," I knew it was time to explain how grandpop was a racist.
(This one is deep, kinda sad. But powerful. I almost didn't include because it wasn't funny, but it is well done. a.s.)
Three were raped, one abused, one is forever unsatisfied with who she is, two, maybe three are cutters, one truly believes she's a slut by nature, one is seventeen with the mind of a ten year old, one is an orphan, one is as mental as I am, and I wouldn't trade any of them for all the perfect friends in the world.
After your twin brother got me pregnant, I was relieved that the baby would still look like you.
Walking downtown, holding hands with my long-haired boyfriend, I often wondered how many people who saw us from behind thought we were lesbians.
When you said I wasn't allowed to say anything at the funeral because it would be "improper," I knew I hated you.
You know you live in a hippie commune when you go to bed alone and wake up with three other people and think this is normal.
As I woke up from my nap to find written on my feet "This is my momma and you can't have her," I realized that my child is very, very strange.
I lost my virginity in a fraternity bunk bed, I lost my dignity on the fire escape the next morning, and I lost my sanity buying the pregnancy test the next month.
After stealing his email password, I figured I'd find he was cheating on me with several women in several cities, but instead found he was cheating on me with lots of men in lots of cities.

Blind man sees wife and kids for the first time!
He had loved her voice since he first heard it in 1984. He had kissed her face a thousand times and held her hand. But he had never seen her - until now.
Michael May (54) had been blind since childhood. Then a miracle operation gave him back the gift of sight and his first ever look at his wife, as well as his two kids!
He lost his sight at the age of three. While playing with a powder he had found on the grounds of a chemical factory, it exploded and damaged his eyes.
But Michael never gave up hope. He learned quickly. He studied and founded an electronics firm. He’s a dedicated skier, and has won gold three times at the Paralympics.
He met his wife Jennifer (49) at a reception. She fell in love with him despite his disability and the couple now have two sons, aged 13 and 15.
One day, Michael accompanied Jennifer to her optician as she needed new contact lenses. More as a joke than anything, Michael also had his eyes examined.
But there was an amazing discovery - a new procedure (repairing the retina with stem cells) could be used to cure Michael’s eyes. The complicated operation was a success.
“A torrent of white lights” is how he described the moments directly after the bandages were taken off. Slowly, he began to make out shapes and colours. His heart raced as he began to discern more.
Then came his first view of Jennifer. First he could only make out her pullover: “Oh Heavens, that’s blue.” Then he saw her tender face, her hair. “So that’s what blonde looks like,” he thought. She was just like he had always seen her in his heart, only more beautiful.
He didn’t want to break down and cry because he was frightened of losing the picture.
Michael still has to train his brain to be able to deal with the new flood of images.
He is as happy as ever with Jennifer. Even though he might now and then look at other women on the street! He had loved her voice since he first heard it in 1984. He had kissed her face a thousand times and held her hand. But he had never se... more -
Holocaust survivors tell love story
In the beginning, there was a boy, a girl and an apple.
He was a teenager in a death camp in Nazi-controlled Germany. She was a bit younger, living free in the village, her family posing as Christians. Their eyes met through a barbed-wire fence and she wondered what she could do for this handsome young man.
She was carrying apples, and decided to throw one over the fence. He caught it and ran away toward the barracks. And so it began.
As they tell it, they returned the following day and she tossed an apple again. And each day after that, for months, the routine continued. She threw, he caught, and both scurried away.
They never knew one another's name, never uttered a single word, so fearful they'd be spotted by a guard. Until one day he came to the fence and told her he wouldn't be back.
"I won't see you anymore," she said. "Right, right. Don't come around anymore," he answered.
And so their brief and innocent tryst came to an end. Or so they thought.

British teacher leaves home for life with African tribesman
A British teacher is giving up her life in Southampton to live in a hut in a remote African village, after falling in love with a tribal elder.
Carole Woolgar, 51, said she immediately fell for Amri Shimata, a Porgoro tribal elder, when she visited Tanzania in 2003.
Having visited Shimata regularly over the past five years, Woolgar is set to swap her comfortable home for a tin-roof hut and no electricity or running water. The village's only lavatory is a "long drop", which is nothing more than a hole in the ground, and all the cooking is done on an open fire or a charcoal stove.
She said: "Since meeting Amri for the first time I have been back to the village two or three times a year - and our romance just blossomed. It had just become harder and harder to say goodbye to Amri when I came to leave so I decided I had to do something. I have no kids to worry about so that made the decision easier."
Miss Woolgar, who has never been married, has been taking lessons in Swahili so she can fit in with the close-knit community, but says the hardest thing will be giving up her "creature comforts". She said: "The village is tiny but the people are so friendly. They have absolutely nothing - you go to a house and people are sleeping on an old mat with a few plastic plates and cups to eat and drink from. They get up as soon as it is light, work in the fields and then go to sleep when it gets dark - but they are so, so welcoming. The thing I'm going to miss the most is my washing machine. The women have to walk to fetch water in buckets and then wash everything by hand. I have been trying to learn Swahili but luckily Amri speaks very good English - he even beats me at Scrabble when we play. He's a very intelligent man."
