British teacher leaves home for life with African tribesman
A British teacher is giving up her life in Southampton to live in a hut in a remote African village, after falling in love with a tribal elder.
Carole Woolgar, 51, said she immediately fell for Amri Shimata, a Porgoro tribal elder, when she visited Tanzania in 2003.
Having visited Shimata regularly over the past five years, Woolgar is set to swap her comfortable home for a tin-roof hut and no electricity or running water. The village's only lavatory is a "long drop", which is nothing more than a hole in the ground, and all the cooking is done on an open fire or a charcoal stove.
She said: "Since meeting Amri for the first time I have been back to the village two or three times a year - and our romance just blossomed. It had just become harder and harder to say goodbye to Amri when I came to leave so I decided I had to do something. I have no kids to worry about so that made the decision easier."
Miss Woolgar, who has never been married, has been taking lessons in Swahili so she can fit in with the close-knit community, but says the hardest thing will be giving up her "creature comforts". She said: "The village is tiny but the people are so friendly. They have absolutely nothing - you go to a house and people are sleeping on an old mat with a few plastic plates and cups to eat and drink from. They get up as soon as it is light, work in the fields and then go to sleep when it gets dark - but they are so, so welcoming. The thing I'm going to miss the most is my washing machine. The women have to walk to fetch water in buckets and then wash everything by hand. I have been trying to learn Swahili but luckily Amri speaks very good English - he even beats me at Scrabble when we play. He's a very intelligent man." Couple buys Channel island on which they fell in love
A couple who fell in love on the Channel Island of Herm have bought the tiny outcrop in a bid to protect the beautiful tourist destination.
John and Julia Singer from Guernsey met on Herm Island 14-years ago and now the couple is to take over the island, which only has 50 inhabitants, one shop and one hotel.
When it was revealed earlier this year that the leaseholders Adrian and Penny Wood Heyworth were selling their rights to the island there were fears for its future. Locals were worried that the beauty spot would lose its unique identity if it were bought by an outsiders. One of the interested parties was the luxury hotel chain Von Essen, which owns a series of top class holiday destinations in the UK and France. Von Essen were reported to be considering paying £15 million for a 40 year lease.
But in the end the island went to Mr and Mrs Singer for an undisclosed sum, believed to be lower than the asking price. Mr Singer said: "No immediate changes are envisaged to the present facilities and our short-term focus will be to maintain everything to the current standards of excellence. We can be certain that nothing will impact on the present warm welcome to visitors or the island's beauty and tranquillity. Herm will remain the jewel in the Bailiwick's crown." Reinstate your love with Romance Novels
Had the sequence of life been as bland as described below; no romance novels would have ever written or read.

They earn their livelihood, bear and bring up children, grow old and finally perish. Men on Men? The rise of bromance
The new rules of manhood suggest that you're not a real man unless you're party to a "bromance". These days, no meeting mano a mano is complete without a lingering hug, a manly pat on the bottom, even a kiss – on the lips! After winning Newcomer of the Year at the WhatsOnStage theatre awards in February, Daniel Radcliffe found himself in a clinch with Gavin & Stacey's James Corden. Before an audience of their peers, the two young men appeared to enjoy a lengthy snog.
The rise of the "bromance" ought to be cause for celebration. This trend has spread from the Continent, where it has always been acceptable for male friends to engage in a bit of slap and tickle. Silvio Berlusconi never had any problem planting his lips on the pasty cheeks of Blair or Bush.
Now, it has become the norm in the Anglo-Saxon world, where public displays of affection have been embraced from Hollywood to Capitol Hill. John Travolta caused a stir when he planted a smacker on Kirk Douglas at the Santa Barbara film festival last year, and three years earlier Douglas's son Michael was seen smooching Danny DeVito at the Golden Globes.
In the UK, even the stiffest of upper lips trembles at the thought of another man's embrace. Here is Prince William, first of a new generation of potentially progressive royals, air-kissing his frigid father. It's a charming image of familial bliss. Long live the bromance. The new rules of manhood suggest that you're not a real man unless you're party to a "bromance". These days, no me... more -

'Illegitimate' daughter reunites parents after 40-year-long separation
A young couple who were forced apart 40 years ago when they had a child out of wedlock are to marry, after being reunited by their daughter.
Christine Orchard, 57, and Chester Locke, 64, first met in a youth club in 1965 and became childhood sweethearts. When Mrs Orchard found out she was pregnant two years later, at the age of 16, it caused a scandal and her mother said she could only keep the baby on the condition that she cut Mr Locke, then 21, from her life.
Mr Locke was told never to contact Christine or his daughter Tracey Orchard, who was raised by her maternal grandparents, and went on to marry another woman and raise his own family. But Miss Orchard, 40, Taunton, Somerset, decided to trace her father following the death of her grandparents and brought him to meet her mother.
Despite their long separation, the pair - who were both divorced - soon fell in love again and are due to marry in two weeks. Mrs Orchard said: "There was always quite a lot of hoo ha about Chester because of the age difference. When my parents found out I was pregnant my Mum and her sisters went into a room and basically decided my future. They told me that if I wanted to I could keep the baby and they would bring her up, but I had to stay away from Chester. Mum told me that if I saw Chester in the street I should walk away."
Miss Orchard, a mother-of-three, said she was amazed when the romance rekindled so quickly after she found her father. She said: "My intention was to get him to meet his grandchildren and great-grandchild. I'm shocked but it is lovely. It's wonderful to see them where they should have been 40 years ago."
Mr Locke, who works in a saw mill, said: "We've made our mistakes but she's the love of my life and I couldn't be happier. If you'd have told me ten years ago that I'd be marrying Christine after all these years I would never have believed you, but here we are. Getting married means a lot to me. I can't wait to spend the rest of our lives together as man and wife." Hotel sacks male staff for seducing older British women
A Turkish hotel has sacked all its male staff because they kept seducing older British women who were looking for romance abroad.
Manager Pelin Yucel said that when she caught her male waiters and barmen bedhopping with guests she decided to replace them all with a women-only team at the 27-bedroom hotel in Marmaris, Turkey. Ms Yucel, 32, said: "It got beyond a joke. The last straw was when I caught my bartender coming out of a toilet with a woman guest. She was embarrassed but he was beaming all over his face."
She also said she could never contact her night receptionist because he was always in bed with the guests. "The waiters would prey on older English women staying at the hotel. They would wait for them to come back from nights out - often drunk - then seduce them. The would have one guest one week, wave goodbye to her, and eye up the new guests as they arrived. It was hell."
The manager of Image Hotel says that now she has an all-women team her job has never been easier. A Turkish hotel has sacked all its male staff because they kept seducing older British women who were looking for romance abroad. ... more -
