The Pornification Of A Generation
A new book traces the migration of porn culture from adult theaters to the mainstream—and asks what that means for kids.
The idea for a book about porn culture came to Kevin Scott the day his daughter decided she absolutely had to have a Bratz-doll pony. For months, the 5-year-old had begged him for a Bratz doll—clad in spike heels, fishnets and miniskirt, enormous puppy-dog eyes protruding from her oversized head. Her sexy look seemed a little too sexy for a preschooler, so he and his wife bought her a different doll, which she was happy with. Except that a few months later, Bratz came out with Bratz Babyz. "If Bratz had looked like Barbie hookers, these looked like baby hookers," Scott says. Again, he convinced his daughter that My Little Pony was just as cool—and for a moment, the conversation ended. Until, of course, the Bratz came out with Bratz Ponyz. And then, says Scott, an English professor at a small college in Georgia, "I realized porn culture and I were in a death match for my daughter's soul."
In a market that sells high heels for babies and thongs for tweens, it doesn't take a genius to see that sex, if not porn, has invaded our lives. Whether we welcome it or not, television brings it into our living rooms and the Web brings it into our bedrooms. According to a 2007 study from the University of Alberta, as many as 90 percent of boys and 70 percent of girls aged 13 to 14 have accessed sexually explicit content at least once.
But it isn't just sex that Scott is worried about. He's more interested in how we, as a culture, often mimic the most raunchy, degrading parts of it—many of which, he says, come directly from pornography. In "The Porning of America" (Beacon), which he has written with colleague Carmine Sarracino, a professor of American literature, the duo argue that, through Bratz dolls and beyond, the influence of porn on mainstream culture is affecting our self perceptions and behavior—in everything from fashion to body image to how we conceptualize our sexuality.

It's porn, just without the sex
It started when three brothers joked about making pornography for fans of the genre who happen to be offended by on-screen sex. Out of that joke came an idea for a website, and they called it PG Porn.
In creating pornography that appeals to viewers who want their titillation toned down, brothers James, Sean and Brian Gunn are banking on web-surfers' growing acceptance of porn.
Sean starred in the television show Gilmore Girls and James wrote the screenplay for the 2002 movie Scooby-Doo. Their latest production, a short spoof called Nailing Your Wife, premiered on Wednesday at their site.
With pornography all over the internet and the video store, the Gunn brothers rely on viewers' familiarity with all its conventions - the goofy acting, the bad music, the lace-thin plots - to create movies that look like the real thing but skirt nudity. Comedy substitutes for hard-core sex.
The actor in Nailing Your Wife is Nathan Fillion, who appeared in the ABC show Desperate Housewives, and his cast mate is porn star Aria Giovanni. PG Porn will feature similar pairings in the future.
"This is a place where the porn and the mainstream film industries meet and get to have some understanding of each other," said James Gunn, a writer, director and producer.
"We like to pretend that we're miles and miles away from pornography, but we're not," he said.
Pornography's size as an industry is often overstated, but web-based porn generates at least $US2 billion a year, said Frederick Lane, the author of Obscene Profits: The Entrepreneurs of Pornography in the Cyber Age.
"People are getting more blase about porn, I don't think there's any question about that," Lane said. "I think the Internet has played a huge role in that, it sort of lowers everybody's threshold."
PG Porn will also sell its content elsewhere under the direction of Disaster Movie producer Peter Safran.
The principals behind PG Porn take the name "PG" from the rating "Parental Guidance Suggested" given to movies largely free of objectionable content. But they do not expect viewers to watch their webisodes with their parents.
Instead, they said they expect men to visit the site in greater numbers than women - at least initially - and they assume most men see plenty of porn.
Their site features racy photos of porn stars Aria Giovanni, Belladonna and Sasha Gray. PG Porn's creators recruited them, asking porn fans about their favorite stars.
Bob Peters, president of New York-based Morality in Media, said PG Porn is not as bad as regular porn sites, but he worries viewers will move on to the real thing.
"In the real world of pornography, if you want to get your start in pornography you start in the gutter," he said. "So real people are abused in the production of pornography." A woman who celebrated her 105th birthday this week said the secret to long life was celibacy, adding that she imagined sex was a "lot of hassle."
Clara Meadmore, who marked her birthday with a drop of wine at the Perran Bay nursing home in Cornwall, southwest England, also received a card from Queen Elizabeth II.
"People have asked me whether I am a homosexual and the answer is no," Meadmore said.
"I have just never been interested in sex.
"I imagine there is a lot of hassle involved and I have always been busy doing other things."
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1903, Meadmore lived in Canada and New Zealand as a child before returning to Britain in her 20s to work as a secretary and housekeeper.

A new course on sex education in China involves what some might consider some pretty graphic literature - especially for 1st graders (primary). Funny cartoons, witty dialogues, testicles that talk to one another, and cool-looking Mr Condoms wearing shades (gallery of pics through link). Female Therapist Admits Rape of a Teen Patient
Jennifer Hastings, 33-year-old psychologist admitted to committing the sex offenses she faced involving a freshman boy she was counseling at Tamarac High School in September and October 2007. She was arrested in October 2007. Hastings, whose trial was scheduled to begin next week, made the plea in Rensselaer County Court on Thursday.
According to her plea she had sex with the teen several times in her car, at local motels and in her Sand Lake home.
Hastings was a court-assigned counselor for the then-freshman at Tamarac High School in Brunswick when the acts occurred in September and October 2007. Trysts occurred in a parking lot across from the school, in a Schodack hotel and at Hastings' home.
Hastings admitted that it started with kissing in the parking lot. Then I had oral sexual contact with him. " Judge McGrath asked Hastings what happened when she took the student to a Schodack motel and later to her home. "There was sex. Yeah, I had sex with him," Hastings responded.
Hastings also has charges pending in Albany County Court for an alleged liaison with the boy in other hotel during the same time.

'Pregnancy pact' school in Mass. allows contraceptives to be distributed
"The board of the Massachusetts high school at the center of the June "pregnancy pact" scandal has unanimously voted to allow contraceptives to be made available to its students.
The plan passed by the Gloucester School Committee will allow contraceptives to be distributed through the school's health clinic, though only with parental consent.
Around 20 parents and students were involved in the City Hall meeting to discuss the revision of the school's current policy of no contraceptives.
Gloucester hit the headlines in June when Time magazine reported that several of the local high school's teenagers had made a pact to get pregnant and raise their children together.
Although local Mayor Carolyn Kirk claimed no pact existed, there was no denying the 17 pregnancies reported at the 1,200-student facility in the last academic year, a figure four times higher than the national average.
A recent survey conducted by students at the Gloucester school found that 86 percent of students polled supported the distribution of contraceptives while 49 percent felt uncomfortable talking about sex with their parents.
"This is what everyone wanted. It's a big issue. I do think the majority [of students] would want it, but there should be limits - age, routine check-ups," Pam Tobey, a 16-year-old junior and the secretary of the Student Advisory Council, told the Boston Globe after the decision was made.
The new policy will take effect as soon as the school board reaches an agreement on the final language of the parental consent form."

Prostitutes 'appear' on Euro banknotes as part of sex trade campaign
Altered Euro banknotes showing the images of prostitutes are being used to discourage Ukrainian women from getting caught up in the sex trade.
The images, which are otherwise almost indistinguishable from the genuine notes, have been produced as part of a campaign to prevent women from seeking to work illegally in the EU. They show under-dressed women leaning against the grand examples of European architecture printed on the currency's bills since its launch in 2002.
