Russell Crowe as Bill Hicks?
Not sure how I missed the news that Russell Crowe wants to play Bill Hicks in a biopic of the late comedian. The actor is quoted talking about the project here, and a recent radio interview with longtime Hicks collaborator Kevin Booth (h/t to the Dead Frog comedy blog) confirms Crowe's role in commissioning a screenplay, which is not yet finished. I'm also not sure how I feel about the idea, since Crowe (who's not known for his jocular side) is already 12 years older than Hicks was when he died at 32, and since a botched biopic would trivialize Hicks as just another E! True Hollywood Story casualty, a guy who smoked too much and courted controversy and died of cancer on the cusp of fame. On the other hand, Booth's participation should ensure that Hicks gets the respect he deserves; and Crowe is protean and versatile enough to play pretty much anybody (Exhibit A: The Insider). Besides, Crowe reportedly wants to focus on performance sequences than biographical scenes, and anything that gets Hicks' legendary stand-up material more circulation (even in mimicked form) is good. "Rachel Maddow will replace Dan Abrams as host of the 9PM hour on MSNBC, the New York Times' Bill Carter reports. Electrosmog enters the dictionary
"Electrosmog", "eco-village" and "carbon footprint" are among the new environmental terms which have made it into the latest Chambers Dictionary.
Popular culture has also had an influence, with "wardrobe malfunction" and "fashion forward" also included. "Credit crunch" and "wags", which have recently won places in other dictionaries, also feature. Dictionary editors said the new words painted a "vivid picture of current interests and concerns".
"Electrosmog" refers to the electromagnetic fields emitted by computers and mobile phones, "eco-village" is a term used for small ecologically-sustainable communities and "carbon footprint" is the measure of the impact human activities on the environment. They are joined by two other environmental terms, "food miles" and "green tax", in the 11th edition of the dictionary.
The war on terror also contributes to the edition with "blue-on-blue", referring to friendly fire attacks, "extraordinary rendition", a controversial detention method where a person is moved from one state to another, and "watch list", a list of those being monitored.
From the world of science and technology, "blu-ray", the blue laser used to read and write discs, "quantum computer", a computer that makes use of quantum mechanics, and "metamaterial", an artificially-created material which has properties not found in nature, make the pages.
Along with "wags", the wives and girlfriends of footballers, "wardrobe malfunction" and "fashion forward", meaning someone embracing the newest fashion trends, the influence of popular culture can be seen with the additions of "nail bars" and "social networking".
The growing interest in cuisine also sees Thai food's "pad thai" enter the dictionary as well as "comfort food" and "dashi", a Japanese clear stock made from dried bonito.

Katy Perry's 'I Kissed A Girl' is number one in the US and is expected to top the UK charts this week. Even though the song seems to send a positive message about her sexual experiences with another girl - apparently, she "liked it" - the gay community is not quite sure what to make of the song and its singer.
One of the reasons why gays and lesbians are not willing to approve of the hit might be Perry's previous song 'UR So Gay', in which she accuses her boyfriend for "acting gay" even though he is not. She opens the song with the lines: "I hope you hang yourself with your H&M scarf/While jacking off listening to Mozart."
MSNBC site contributor Tony Sclafani writes: "Well, it's official. It's cool to make fun of gay people again. How do we know? Because the folks in Medialand told us as much by relentlessly cheerleading two gay-unfriendly songs by newcomer Katy Perry."
Gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell said he liked the music but found the lyrics dubious: "They're not seriously homophobic but they can be read as implicitly demeaning gay people. I am sure Katy would get a critical reception if she expressed comparable sentiments in a song called 'UR so black, Jewish or disabled'. Should there be different standards for lyrics about gay issues, as opposed to race and disability issues? I don't think so. Having said this, the homophobia of some reggae, rap and ragga music is far worse. Some of these songs explicitly incite the murder of lesbians and gays. They are much more offensive than any lyrics sung by Katy Perry."
Perry, whose parents are both Protestant pastors, has said she was not aiming to alienate gay listeners. In an interview with the US New Gay website, when it was put to her that she had annoyed many gay people, she said: "That's unfortunate. It's not what I came to do."
