Big Spenders Put Local Online in the Mix
Nearly one-half of US national advertisers surveyed are currently pursuing local online advertising, according to a September 2008 study conducted by Sterling Market Intelligence for Marchex. More than four out of 10 said they were putting at least 25% of their online marketing budget into local targeting. “The data shows that national advertisers clearly understand the Internet drives in-store sales and they’ve begun to integrate local into their marketing mix,” said Greg Sterling, principal of Sterling Market Intelligence, in a statement. Online advertising spending up 15% so far
The US market may be weakening, but according to the latest research by Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and PricewaterhouseCoopers, online advertising is continuing to grow with more and more people marketing online. The first six months of 2008, was reported to have increased by 15%. This will bring the total spend so far in only the US to a total of $11 billion to the online marketing industry.
"The essentially flat performance we see quarter to quarter reflects in part cyclical advertising trends," said Randall Rothenberg, President and CEO of the IAB. "Compared to the trajectory in other media and in the general economy, interactive has outperformed because it delivers a level of accountability unmatched by any other advertising medium."
The month of June was the highest growth Month witch set a high at 24%. There are some predictions that 2009 will see a further growth of 29%.
Although good news, this doesn't mean that online advertising isn't seeing the effects of the economy. These percentages, of course, don't take into effect the credit crisis of the past few weeks and the downturn of the stock market. Still, Rothenberg expects online ad spending to reach $23 billion in 2008. 'Game on' for Google AdSense
Advertisers can now place AdSense ads within the content of online, flash-based, games, announced Google earlier this week, finally catching up to Microsoft and Yahoo.
Users of AdSense for Games, currently in beta, will be able to display video, image or text ads within games during predefined slots such as interstitial frames before a game, after a level change, or when a game is over.
Reports have indicated that online game players aren't averse to ad-supported games. With the demographic of players covering all age ranges and attracting both sexes, AdSense for Games will be welcomed by advertisers looking to explore in-game advertising and publishers looking to monetize content.
"Working with Google will be tremendously beneficial to both parties, as well as to our community of game developers," said Jameson Hsu, CEO of Mochi Media, who this week announced the game network's collaboration with AdSense for Games.
"Google AdSense for Games will be able to offer a wide reach for its advertisers, and Mochi Media can better monetize international traffic for our developers and publishers." Bank turmoil fuels phishing boom
Hi-tech fraudsters are taking advantage of the global financial turmoil, say governments and security experts.
The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a warning saying phishing gangs were using the turmoil to extract valuable information from consumers.
A UK parliamentary group said it expected a move away from ID theft towards attacks on account holders.
The news comes as a UK banking group reveals that phishing attacks were up more than 180% in a year.
Fresh targets
The FTC said the current rapid changes in the banking world, where many institutions suddenly had new owners, could only help fraudsters keen to steal login and other personal details.
"Scammers are taking advantage of upheavals in the financial marketplace to confuse consumers into parting with valuable personal information," it warned.
It said it expected fraudsters to pose as the new owners of banks or the federal agencies charged with oversight of struggling institutions.
The FTC urged consumers to be wary and not reply to e-mail messages or pop-ups that ask for personal or financial information even if they appeared to come from a bank. Consumers should also scrutinise bank and credit card statements for unauthorised withdrawals or transfers.
Secure Computing said its October spam report showed that many of the banks and other financial institutions caught up in the turmoil were topping its list of phishing targets.
Chase, Wachovia and Bank of America were among the most popular targets with scammers, it said.
The company said it expected British banks to be popular too in the coming weeks as changes and mergers are completed.
In its second annual report, the All Parliamentary Group on ID Fraud said tighter credit lending rules would lead to more attempts to get at existing bank accounts.
"There is no longer a guarantee that they will get credit by applying assuming another person's identity, so they are instead tapping into accounts which already exist," read the report.
Fraud figures released in early October by the Association of Payment Clearing Services (Apacs), which represents UK banks, show a steep rise in the number of phishing attacks even before the turmoil in the banking world began.
From January to June 2008 phishing attacks rose by 186% on the same period in 2007, it said. In total it saw more than 20,682 phishing incidents during that six month period. Hi-tech fraudsters are taking advantage of the global financial turmoil, say governments and security experts. ... more -

Feds Start Moving on Net Security Hole
Starting Thursday morning, the U.S. government is seeking comment on who should create and vouch for the internet's most crucial document -- the root zone file -- that serves as the cornerstone of the system that lets users get to websites and emails find their way to inboxes.
The non-profit ICANN, the for-profit Verisign and the Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration all have different answers to what is a long-standing, and geopolitically charged internet governance question.
But the only thing that matters for the security of the internet is the speed that they answer the question, according to domain-name system expert Paul Vixie.
"We've got to get the root signed, it does not matter by whom," Vixie said by e-mail. "It's necessary simply that it be done, by someone, and that we stop anyone from arguing about whether letting someone hold the root key would make them king."
At issue is a massive net security hole that security researcher Dan Kaminsky discovered in early 2008 that was temporarily patched in July. If not given a complete fix soon, the vulnerability could allow so much net fraud that it would strip all trust from the internet users that any website they were visiting is the genuine article, experts say.
The only known complete fix is DNSSEC -- a set of security extensions for name servers. (That said, there are other effective defenses and OpenDNS, for one, protects users now.)
Those extensions cryptographically sign DNS records, ensuring their authenticity like a wax seal on an letter. The push for DNSSEC has been ramping up over the last few years, with four regions -- including Sweden (.se) and Puerto Rico (.pr) -- already securing their own domains with DNSSEC. Four of the largest top-level domains -- .org, .gov, .uk and .mil, are not far behind, while the entire U.S. government will comply for its websites starting in January 2009.
But because DNS servers work in a giant hierarchy, deploying DNSSEC successfully also requires having someone trustworthy sign the so-called "root file" with a public-private key. Otherwise, an attacker can undermine the entire system at the root level, like a criminal having taken over control of the Supreme Court justices.
With a properly signed root file, your browser can repeatedly ask, "How do I know this is the real answer?", until the question reaches the root file, which says, "Because I vouch for it."
Bill Woodcock, one of the net's foremost experts on network security, blasted the NTIA earlier this summer for moving too slowly on DNSSEC, while the government protested that it was moving at the right speed.
"If the root isn't signed, then no amount of work that responsible individuals and companies do to protect their domains will be effective," Woodcock said in July. "You have to follow the chain of signatures down from the root to the top-level domain to the user's domain. If all three pieces aren't there, the user isn't protected."
On Tuesday, NTIA's Acting Assistant Secretary Meredith Baker told international net leaders that it was opening comment on DNSSEC and root zone signing this week.
"In light of existing and emerging threats, the time is ripe to consider long-term solutions, such as DNSSEC," Baker said. "As we consider deployment of DNSSEC, particularly at the root zone level, it is critical that all the interested stakeholders have the opportunity to express their views on the matter, as deployment of DNSSEC would represent one of the most significant changes to the DNS infrastructure since its inception."
That's where the politics comes in. The DNS root is controlled by the NTIA, which divides the responsibility for the creation, editing and distribution of the root file between itself, ICANN and the for-profit Verisign, which runs the .com domain.

System lets your plants blog their daily existence
Ever wondered what your plants get up to while you're away? Thought not. Though you might still be interested in the intriguing "Midori-San" system, that allows a normal houseplant to write entries in a standard blog. The Midori-San uses sensors to read the bioelectric current flowing across the surface of the leaves, which naturally fluctuates in response to environmental factors such as temperature changes, humidity, vibration, electromagnetic waves and nearby human activity. An algorithm then translates the data into sentences which are posted to the plant's blog. I wonder if it'll prove to be more interesting than some human bloggers out there... Beyonce Speaks On Marriage With Jay-Z
Jay-Z and Beyonce are married. That has been something "private" to Jay and B but it's never really been too much of a secret. Still, Beyonce has decided to remain quiet about their marriage for some time. Nevertheless, she recently spoke out about why she's been tight lipped about it and more.
"I feel that, especially now, with the Internet and paparazzi and camera phones, it's so difficult to maintain mystery," she told Essence. "And that's so important. Even in a relationship, I feel like not being that accessible is really important. If you think about Prince or Michael Jackson, or any superstars, you couldn't see them when they got off their planes or when they got out of the pool and didn't comb their hair. It's great that people see we're not perfect. But it's almost impossible to have superstars now, because people will never get enough. And it's not even about my music. It's about all the things that people imagine about me in their minds. But I can't satisfy everyone. I know that Jay and I probably do inspire people. And I appreciate people feeling proud. But this is the only way I've been able to stay sane, so why would I start talking now?"
"[Not speaking] controls your brand. It controls what you want to put out there and kind of forces people to talk about what you want them to talk about."
Still, B actually gave a little insight on their relationship.
"We decide everything," she noted. "My word is my word. What Jay and I have is real. It's not about interviews or getting the right photo op. It's real."

Jim Jones Disses T.I., While Tip Stays Diplomatic
Jim Jones has recently made clear his feelings about being left out of the “Swagger Like Us” single [click to listen].
“I think it was deliberate,” Jim Jones told Complex.com. “I really do think it was deliberate; maybe in my sick twisted mind I’m a little crazy. People know who set the precedent as far as fashion in this industry and people know who damn near changed the world as far as fashion...in the past five years I stepped in and gave them a taste of what rock and roll looks like from my side. I guess people would say from an urban side, and it seemed to catch on like wildfire, to the point that people was going to stores and asking for that Jim Jones look.”
The Diplomats member is now working on a track called “Jackin’ Swagger From Us,” featuring Lil Wayne and Juelz Santana. The song will use the same M.I.A. sample from the original record.
In addition to expressing his less than enthused feelings about being excluded from the track, Jim Jones also had a few words for the artists on the record, including rapper T.I

Scarface Calls McCain Racist, Uses Slurs In Rant Interview
In an interview with Rolling Out TV, Scarface [click to read] may have given the most controversial opinion on the presidential race yet.
Expressing his support for Illinois Senator Barack Obama, Scarface praised his political strategy. “I think Barack Obama has the right idea. I think he played his campaign very well. He didn’t lean his meter ‘either or,’ he came right in dead center, and that’s politics.”
However, on the other side of the coin, Scarface brutally bashed Senator John McCain and accused him of being a racist. “If you’ve never in you’ve life ever seen a nigga-hatin’ motherfucker, a motherfucker that just hates niggas, look at that fuckin’ pink-ass white boy,” ‘Face said without regret.
Continuing in an extreme sarcastic undertone, Scarface gave “respect” to McCain, and called out the candidates’ decision throughout the debate to avoid eye contact with Senator Obama. “At least he’s real with himself. The whole time they had their debate, you know that motherfuckin’ peckerwood would not look that nigga in his eyes. And that right there showed me the respect he had for niggas. John McCain man, I respect that.”
