Hippie apes make war as well as love, study finds
Despite their reputation as lovers not fighters of the primate world, bonobos actually hunt and eat other great apes, German researchers said Monday.
Their findings, the first direct evidence of hunting by the so-called "hippie" apes, show that such behavior is not linked to male dominance as females rule bonobo society and also go on hunts.
"We always have this view that hunting is a male business," said Gottfried Hohmann of the Max-Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. "What our study shows is this is not necessarily the case.
"This has implications for models on early humans that people have proposed how humans have evolved," said Hohmann, whose findings are published in Current Biology.
Bonobos, chimpanzees and orangutans, collectively known as the great apes, are the closest genetic relatives to humans and scientists study their behavior to learn more about our own evolution.
The apes are generally considered more peaceful than their close cousins, the chimps, and have a reputation for free-loving ways because sex plays a major role their society, being used for greetings, conflict resolution and reconciliation.
Scientists had thought bonobos, found in the lowland forest south of the river Congo, only ate small animals such as squirrels, forest antelopes and rodents they encountered.
But over five years of observing a group of bonobos the researchers recorded about 10 instances when a group of the apes set out on hunting trips in search of chimpanzees.
Each time the bonobos silently crept through the woods on the ground, trying to get underneath a group of chimps before clambering up a tree in a sudden attack, the researchers said.
The bonobo hunts were successful on fewer than half the excursions and in some cases shared the meat, evidence they were willing to share to encourage group hunting, Hohmann and colleagues said.-----------------this is our follow up to the monkeys serving drinks(: Despite their reputation as lovers not fighters of the primate world, bonobos actually hunt and eat other great apes, German researche... more -
Exotic spiders invading the UK
Exotic species of spiders are making their homes in the UK, scientists say.
Researchers believe arachnids arriving in imports of food and plants are now able to survive and spread thanks to the UK's increasingly mild climate.
The new inhabitants include a species of false widow spider and some believe the deadly black widow could be next to invade.
Conservation group Buglife wants import rules to be strengthened to stem the tide of alien species invasion.
Matt Shardlow, director of Buglife, told BBC News: "Other countries in the world take great care about what biological material they allow in, because it can contain pests that can damage our goods, our livelihoods, our health and our biodiversity.
Our increasingly warm climate is starting to suit many more spiders
Stuart Hine, Natural History Museum
"Currently in the UK, we have a laissez-faire attitude - there is an open licence for people to bring in dangerous pests."
But a spokesperson for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said that a new strategy was in place to "tackle the threat to the UK's native biodiversity from unwanted pest species which have 'hitchhiked' into the UK on plants".
Aggressive arachnid
John Partridge from the British Arachnological Society said his organisation had had an increase in the number of enquiries about "strange spiders".
He added: "We are certainly getting more spiders coming into the UK - and it seems that more are spreading around the country once they are in." --------------more of this creepy crawler story and more videos at the link!------------------------------------------------

This story makes your skin crawl! But you know what? Spiders are important. One example: I owned a home on a river in the Rockie Mountains and we would get a massive amount of mosquitoes in certain months. One time I noticed a very beautiful large web being made at the front door and decided to leave it and watch the spider do his thing. The next day there were probably several hundred mosquitoes in his web and I said, Wonderful, I don't have to use chemicals to rid the mosquitoes! It seriously cut down the mosquitoes entering my house! Now, I always remember this and praise the creepy spider and let him do his thing. He's there to protect and eat many spiders! Debt Collectors: India call centers get another view of U.S. - Washington Post- ms...
For the past three years, Chaturvedi has been a top collection agent at her call center, phoning hundreds of Americans a day and politely asking them to pay up. As the U.S. financial crisis plunges Americans into debt, her business is one of the fastest-growing sectors in Indian outsourcing. It is also one of the few sectors of outsourcing in India that is still aggressively hiring.
"Lately, 25-year-old Americans are telling me that they are declaring themselves bankrupt," said Chaturvedi, raising her eyebrows in shock. "These days the situation is so emotional, so fragile. We have to have so much empathy and patience."
"It's like people are totally drowning," said Omkar Gadgil, 24, who goes by the alias Richard Rudy and was a math major in college. He is brainy and considered the office expert on the intricacies of debt collection. "There has just been years of overspending and now: the crash."
Chaturvedi said she has never seen it so bad. Many of the young employees say they are flabbergasted at just how widespread the financial ruin appears to be. For the past three years, Chaturvedi has been a top collection agent at her call center, phoning hundreds of Americans a day and polit... more
